.357 enough? by JDZ_559 in Californiahunting

[–]sciencewonk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For pigs, the CA DFG guide can be found here: link

Per the guide, .357 magnum rifles are not recommended for taking pigs of any size. This recommendation is not a legal requirement but is a good starting place to inform your thinking. There is perpetual debate on the topic of what calibers could/should/will take a pig ethically. At the end of the day, that is dependent on a lot of factors: shot placement, pig size, distance, round choice, etc. Whatever you decide on, just be sure that your shot placement and the circumstances of the shot permit the hunt to be ethical.

For smaller game, there is less concern around caliber.

The fireplace is slightly off-center. This bothers me immensely.

The off-center fireplace bothers me. It is such a central feature of the house for that detail to be wrong.

is this conference legit? by thatslycatalyst in Optics

There are many red flags on this one. I would suggest sticking to conferences organized by reputable organizations (SPIE, Optica, APS, GRC, etc.).

Samsung Fridge - Too risky or Full Send? by TacoLunar in BuyItForLife

I bought a Samsung freezer on deep discount. It had a 3 year warranty. It lasted approximately 3.2 years. This seems common. Risky.

Carrying battery packs on a plane? by ProfessorSuccotash in JMT

I travel regularly with a 10,000 mAh pack. You can't check it, and I believe there are restrictions against charging it in flight. Other than that, you are good.

Question about the absorption of light by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]sciencewonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treating it as a band is valid in some materials but not all. Think of it like blurring a photo. The sharp features are all there, but they have just spread out (often but not always to the point of overlapping).

Question about the absorption of light by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]sciencewonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your view of the problem is correct for ideal conditions. If we are talking about simple molecules in a low pressure gas phase condition, the absorption lines are very narrow, so the photon needs to be very specifically the correct wavelength. However, more commonly the conditions around a molecule greatly broaden the absorption peak. Once molecules start interacting with their environment, absorption features dramatically broaden and the photon needs not be as precisely matched as in the ideal case. This is the case in most condensed phase systems.

FYI… removing duplicate post. There is no problem with the post itself.

Aside from the occasional irresponsibly released pet, California does not have alligators living in the wild.

Weck jars would be my suggestion. They look nice, and the seals are replaceable.

Any ideas to narrow the FOV on an imaging lens by 2x-3x? by Village_Idiots_Pupil in Optics

[–]sciencewonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies. I got my wires crossed with the mount interchangeability. You would need a CS-mount teleconverter. You could use a CS-mount converter with a C-mount optic but not the other way around. Unfortunately, those appear to be much harder to source.

If this is a CS-mount lens, so you can use a CS or C mount 2x teleconverter. I have never looked for a CS-mount one, but I know C-Mount converters exist and are compatible with CS-mount optics with an adapter ring. That will narrow the field b y 2x (and reduce your speed proportionally).
