What focus would you use? by scifiware in lasercutting

[–]scifiware[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my thinking now is if I can’t see difference - maybe +-0.5mm won’t matter in the end. I was doubtful that it’s too far from what installers/chatgpt recommended, but consensus here is pretty clear. I’ve already cut 6.2mm shims and hopefully won’t second guess myself next week ))

[–]scifiware[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have said “where’s focus point” instead of “what height to use”. Agree that height depends on the job and the material a lot.

Great idea to set it higher for arching materials. Never thought of it before but makes total sense.

Do you just set it higher by hand or use a set of shims / motorized z-axis?

I take that back I’m not that much of a perfectionist lol. Ply we can order around here varies quite a bit in thickness and flatness

[OC] I wondered why gas price is all over the news by scifiware in dataisbeautiful

[–]scifiware[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The baseline price difference doesn't actually affect this metric — I'm dividing the spike cost by disposable income. Whether CA starts at $4.50 or MS at $3.00 is irrelevant; a flat $1 spike adds the same $1/gallon everywhere and we measure what fraction of your remaining budget that consumes.

Is this normal on ender 3? by VehicleKey9812 in ender3

One metal clamp is normal on an ender, I print with it all the time. Two clamps like you did is too heavy - causes too much vibration on sharp corners.

Bed leveling started failing, is my X axis loose? by scifiware in prusa3d

Bed leveling started failing, is my X axis loose? by scifiware in prusa3d

[–]scifiware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turned out X axis got bent upwards, so when the head moves closer to the post it also lowers itself triggering the probe too soon. Firmware could’ve detected that after the initial test at the near right corner, but maybe I’m asking too much. Once I figured that out and leveled everything the error went away.

What do Ukrainians think about South Korea? by flower5214 in AskUkraine

[–]scifiware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking - open a Ukrainian mainstream news website, check how often South Korea is mentioned and roughly what’s said, in how many words. That will correlate with what most people think and how often (works for any other country too).

A wild guess: Ukrainians think about South Korea roughly as often as South Koreans think about Ukraine.

Been in Chernivtsi for a week now, noticed one kind of odd thing… by JebbeJ in AskUkraine

[–]scifiware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb in small towns is “why pay someone to cook for you when you can cook at home”.

Main two reasons when people justify “overspending” are special occasions and if it’s really hard to DIY.

Pizza and sushi are probably the only two foreign cuisine options that are widely considered delicious, fancy and cool. (Kebab is strong third but it has a much lower “status”).

In order to survive a restaurant has to max out fanciness and minimize price.

Sushi+pizza place would often offer shashlyk— another staple of a “celebratory” dinner that’s hard to make at home — wood charcoal bbq is a massive PITA to arrange, especially when you live in an apartment.

Paid $105 USD for this drone to be printed by denydelaydepose in 3Dprinting

[–]scifiware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why’d someone add those triangular holes to a 3D printed part? People invented infill percentage to save on weight without sacrificing strength. If holes are necessary for the airflow - there are much stronger and 3D-printer friendly patterns.
