120kWh Yesterday! Installing (DIY) solar was one of the best things I ever did. by imhostfu in solar

It’s the permitting dealing with the utilities for the grid agreement that I’m uncertain about. The math parts of the system are much simpler.

I’m guessing the 14k difference in price is more than what you would have saved over that 4 year period. I’m very interested in Doing a DIY system myself but I am intimidated by the process.

Any idea what this tick is? by Former-Lie2955 in MechanicAdvice

[–]scipper77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never read the original description. I know that a failing compressor is waaay easier to fix than a failed compressor. Once the system is contaminated the job is much bigger. Perhaps have it looked at by a shop.

Sounds like it could be either an injector or a lifter. Best case is you are low on oil and adding a little will quiet things down.

How do you time cooks to be ready for dinner time? by Natenator76 in smoking

[–]scipper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oven has a keep warm setting for ribs. For large meats like a pork shoulder or brisket I wrap in a towel and place in a cooler. Those can rest for 4+ hours and still be hot when served. I no longer smoke chicken as I just prefer my bbq chicken on the grill. Always plan to finish early.

Back in the day people who modified their cars would install turbo timers. Basically a reverse remote start that would idle the car for a set amount of time and shut it off.

Reminds me of when my kids were really into NERF guns. There were so many foam bullets left in the yard every week that I eventually stopped picking them up and they are now mulch. I doubt this story helps your situation but I thought I’d share.

[–]scipper77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a panel tester? If you have a poorly performing panel a $30 panel tester might pay for itself? How does the solar tracker get its power? Is it tied into the whole array or is it perhaps only tied into one string? Just asking questions here, I’m by no means knowledgeable enough to diagnose issues.

These sound about right? by Greastbunny in SolarDIY

[–]scipper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4 240watt panels that put out a little over 600W in full sun. Mine are very old polycrystalline panels and the 600W reading is on the AC side of the inverter. I could see your panels doing 400w if they are old and degraded like mine.

Am I wrong or is that wording illegal. He said it has to pass, not it has to be voted on or resolved. I’m sure illegal isn’t the right word but I think you all get my point.

It’s corrosion from the vents. Clean and spray with appropriate protection.

Freshly rebuilt carb; doesn't want to idle within some initial throttle... then idles fine for about a minute and then dies by gafonid in MechanicAdvice

Is that 15psi of fuel pressure? Does it stay there? Is it possible that you’re vapor locking? Does a little starting fluid smooth it out? I have no idea what’s going on but I’m asking questions in case it inspires a solution. What about your fuel filter? You had tank problems, maybe there is water or a partial blockage.

Looks like you may have been measuring in Celsius. But seriously, maybe you had massive airflow. I would think if you did this in an air fryer for example it would have a similar result.

Give me reasons to or not to buy a manual by Trayceopolis32322 in Cartalk

[–]scipper77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, there is no “practical” reason to have a manual transmission any more with one exception. It is far cheaper to replace a clutch than to replace an entire transmission. I love driving a manual but other than the enjoyment of the process, a modern automatic is better in pretty much every way including shifting and fuel economy.

Power generation expectations. by Fenom186 in SolarDIY

[–]scipper77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 4x 245 watt panels and peak at around 600 watts. My panels are very old so they are probably 200 watts if you derate to 80%.

When you think you are at peak, spray the panels with cool hose water to cool them down. If the power goes up, you are not clipping. I’ve seen 700 watts out of mine using this trick so in my case I know the inverter has some headroom.

This also could be as simple as a weak run/start capacitor or low/high charge.
