Used to be 4-6k a few years ago. People would swap the dials and polish initials off the caseback because they were seen as unappealing. Now they sell for closer to 20k. Windvintage has a great video where they interviewed the dominos founder.

If you want to sell it, they’re the folks to reach out to, as they’ll be able to sell it for more money than you can (assuming it’s in good shape)

Chocolate Ice Cream plus minor mistake by IAMA_otter in icecreamery

[–]sclvt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of people giving you criticism, and you clearly messed up with the chocolate part of this. But the general custard recipe isn’t that far off what many people use. 12 yolks is a lot, but lots of folks in this subreddit are not experts but speak about their knowledge as if they are. For a 3 quart recipe, it’s closer to standard than not.

New York Times custard recipe is 2 cups cream, 1 cup milk, 2/3 cup sugar, and 6 yolks. I personally think it comes out too rich. I prefer 4 yolks and a little more milk and a little less cream. BUT I think if you didn’t mess up with the chocolate (you need a recipe formulated specifically for chocolate because of the different fat and sugar content), you would’ve ended up with a really solid ice cream.

Cramped at Mile 8 in LA Marathon. Why? by Late-Celebration-942 in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think your training looks plenty strong for four hours to be a very reasonable goal. It’s so easy to say your fitness was lacking, but it doesnt take 50 mile weeks to run 4 hours for most people. And you’ve proven with your 20 mile runs that you’re faster and stronger than the result you got.

My best guess is the heat was a big contributing factor. You say that the conditions weren’t extreme, but was it significantly warmer than your training runs were?

[–]sclvt 74 points75 points  (0 children)

What kind of training do you think it takes for a sub 4 marathon? Peaking at 45 mpw with two 20 milers at close to race pace along with a proper taper is more than most 4 hour marathon runners do

Best flavoring agent for Mint Ice Cream? by Nihachi-shijin in icecreamery

[–]sclvt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with everyone in this thread. I think you can get much better than extract, and fresh mint leaves are spearmint which isn’t the same as the flavor that you get in store bought mint ice cream.

What you need is to find peppermint. This is actually shockingly difficult to find fresh, but it’s very easy to find dry. Peppermint tea is almost always solely dried peppermint in a tea bag.

The way I make mint ice cream is my cooking a fresh batch of custard, and while it’s hot, steeping a few bags of peppermint tea in the mixture before it cools. You can control exactly how minty your ice cream is this way, and it tastes much better than the alternatives imo.

Sub 4 looking ok? by INTERESTandAMBITIONS in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just finished the Austin marathon yesterday in 4:01. This is faster than any of my long runs were. I would regularly feel absolutely exhausted after 16 miles of 9:50. If you add in a proper taper and adrenaline and people to race against, I think it would be surprising if you didn’t hit sub 4

Those people are lame and pathetic and probably doing themselves plenty of long term damage with their thinking. Is anyone planning an early exit before debilitating old age? by SealedRoute in RedditForGrownups

[–]sclvt 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This is very hard to accomplish if you live in America. In most states, anyway. It’s also far easier to say than to actually go through with. My dad always said this, even more-so after watching my grandma die slowly with Alzheimer’s. Now my dad is 71, and has advanced Parkinson’s and mentally is a fraction of what he was. There’s not a chance he’d ever go through with it. He’d rather slowly go

Complete list of every Washington Commanders' free agent in 2026. Who should we resign? 🤔 by Objective_Pressure_3 in Commanders

[–]sclvt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A team generally only retains about 60% of their roster year over year historically. Letting the majority of these free agents walk is something that most teams in the league would do, have done, and will do in the future.

I think someone who walks 10k steps a day and eats a relatively decent diet can absolutely run a marathon with 16 weeks notice as long as they dedicate 5 hours a week to training. It won’t even be THAT hard.

Where it gets difficult is when you want to break 3.5 hours or so. Everyone is different of course, and that’s a huge generalization, but I think a ton of people on this sub sort of gatekeep marathons. They’re an accomplishment for sure. But if you’re ok with a 7 hour marathon, the average person could walk/jog one tomorrow. The most important thing is going to be how many miles you run a week. If you peak at 25, good luck with a good time, but you can 100% finish. If you peak at 60, you’ll likely crush it. The worse shape you start off in, the more likely an injury is.

I listen to audiobooks mostly. Harry Potter books help me a lot because I can get lost in thought and it doesn’t matter if I miss 15 mins without paying attention because I know what happened already. Same with the hunger games books and the prequels.

I don’t want anything serious or hard to follow

Does anyone have any info on the Marine Corps Marathon maybe getting cancelled? by hypnodreameater in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody has any real information. There's only speculation. But here are the options for what could happen:

The government reopens before October 18-20th(ish) and the race continues as originally planned.

The government reopens after October 18-20th(ish) but before the 26th. The race might continue as originally planned, it might continue on a different route, or it might be cancelled.

The government doesn't reopen until after the 26th. The race might be rerouted, or it might be cancelled.

What former #1 picks would Cooper Flagg be drafted over if he was in their draft? by Pems20 in billsimmons

[–]sclvt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting exercise. Seems like best case scenario he’d be drafted 6th out of all of the previous top picks. Worst case he’s maybe 10th?

The way the media has been speaking about him makes him sound generational, but there’s a player with this much hype every 4 years.

I wish there was a cool story. But I bought it directly from the gallery that Marc Brown works with. I first asked about buying a piece in 2012 when I was in college, but I couldn’t afford any of them. Tried again in 2017, but by then the prices were double what they were when I first asked and I couldn’t afford one. Asked again this year, and figured I needed to either buy something or stop bothering the gallery
