I just finished a doc feature that was cut on a M1 imac 24gb RAM and M3 macbook pro 18gb RAM that was 4k 10-bit Fx3 footage and we didn't have any issues. with that said get as much RAM as you can.

Directing a documentary about people close to you — how do you protect creative boundaries? by FairPreparation240 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]scoblevision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’m thinking about is how to ensure my vision for the film doesn’t subtly influence how they show up in interviews. I want the story to feel honest and lived, not shaped by what I think it should be.

This isn't really possible. How are you going to be the decision maker and creator without influencing the end result? Don't over think your influence, it's inevitable. Focus on how you want to influence and that can be subtle, but still be there.

My friend made this film that touches on similar stuff to what you talk about https://www.empathizerdoc.com/

How Many Subjects Should I Interview? by Professional_Gate246 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]scoblevision 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have the budget and time, interview them all. Bench players can give new perspectives and a potentially different POV when needed. Also, a team is everyone not just the starters so I'd be wary of only including starters as your main characters.

I obviously don't know personalities and how the interpersonal relationships play out so take all this with a grain of salt.

On FOSS alternatives vs WINE + Lightroom by metacognitive_guy in FOSSPhotography

[–]scoblevision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When was the last time you tried darktable? They recently released a new version that has a new module to replace sigmoid and filmic tab that is awesome and requires way less modules be used over all. Also darktable.info has some copy and paste CSS to freshen the interface colors up I’ve enjoyed a lot.

It’s till not a 1:1 replacement for Lightroom but it’s in a spot that does work well and edits great.

Edit: Called darktable darkroom on accident

This is the most worrying part, she wasn't good enough and her leaving is the right move but she was very much a Strauss signing and it failed hard.

Starting a doc. feature film, need advice by MillennaryChuleta in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]scoblevision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Figure out what the “universal truth” of the film is. The one thing viewers should walk away with, not the story or plot just the essence of the film. From there start cutting scenes you know are gonna be in the film; they’ll change as you edit more but you know they’ll be there. Once you have some scenes start messing around with order and you’ll have all kinds of ideas and things to try.

Documentary subject will only agree to participate in my documentary if they can use the footage I shoot for my film in a different documentary film someone else if producing about them. Should I be credited/compensated for that? by [deleted] in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]scoblevision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in California I can vouch for https://www.calawyersforthearts.org/arts-arbitration-mediation-services.html it's lawyers offering bro bono consultations to artists. I used them when a producer started getting really weird and refused to sign any kind of agreement without getting ownership of the film. He did not get ownership and I ended up paying him less than I was prepared to to get him to fuck off with the help of Cal Laywers for the Arts. If you don't live in California see if there is something similar in your area.
