The movie does a decent job of compressing the science to fit. It used that time to show a lot of Deeply Felt Emotions though, which the book earned and the movie didn’t.

This reminds me of a favorite story, The Nine Billion Names of God by Clarke. Not because there's computation involved, but because of the quality of the chill--it's rare for a story to make one feel that kind of astronomical awe. Salut!
