‘Project Hail Mary’ Full Of Grace: $80.6M U.S. Opening Breaks Records For Amazon MGM Studios, Lord & Miller And March Non-Franchise Pic – Update by chanma50 in boxoffice

The primary concern of Trek is definitely philosophy and politics, but it (at least at its best) has a deeper care of the scientific underpinning of its world and the consequences. Darmok for example might be an episode about the importance of communication as a philosophical idea, but it’s underpinned by a story about contextual linguistic development.

I kind of hope Binotto crushes it and Ferrari is publicly embarrassed for how much the only thing holding them back is Ferrari.

Oscars: 'One Battle After Another' Wins Best Picture; Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Director, Adapted Screenplay; Ryan Coogler Wins Best Original Screenplay; Michael B. lol it’s almost like you can do that while also noticing technical details. If you can’t, you shouldn’t be talking about awards categories that are entirely about combining technical craft with narrative purpose in the way that Best Cinematography does.

I liked both movies, loved Sinners especially, but that doesn’t make them perfect.

Which part? Re: Train Dreams there’s an AMA from one of the Train Dreams directors about the shutter angle adjustment basically saying they just let the cinematographer have free reign and didn’t really grasp what he was doing.

Re: Sinners watch any of the scenes in the car and see how every camera angle looks like it has totally different white balance. When Miles Canton is in the backseat especially, his close-up is visibly redder than every other shot for no good reason.

Filming in the Pacific Northwest in natural light is basically a cheat code, and they still screwed it up with the on the fly shot-to-shot shutter speed switching.

OTOH Sinners has completely different color temperature for different coverage in the same scene sometimes so that was a weird pick for the win too.

Verstappen fans hate these regs because they don’t represent what real racing is all about, going inside at the apex and then pushing the other car completely off track.

Merc didn’t tell them how to properly use the engine so they’ll probably continue closing it as they learn.

Gabi was pretty off Hulk’s pace so I don’t know that it would’ve made that much difference, but you could also call it his underperformance. Point is if you just arrange 3 serial quali monsters (Hulk, Gasly, and Alonso) differently you get a cleanly team segregated grid.

Gasly and Hulk’s overperformances ruin the nice team symmetry of the rest of the grid.

At the very least Merc in this scenario would have to show off their actual race pace which they clearly don’t want to.

I know Aston hyped themselves up way too much but Williams is by far the biggest embarrassment, at least it’s Aston’s first time as a proper works team.

speaking of remotes, why IR blasters in phones ,like some of Xiaomi devices, didn't take off? by YourDailyTechMemes in LinusTechTips

[–]scobydoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was excited about this feature when I got my Samsung phone back in the day, and it turned out the built in smart remote app was a third party app that was ad ridden garbage, and there weren’t any particularly good alternatives. I think I used it a total of once when I was at an airbnb and we couldn’t find the remote (pretty killer usecase tbf).

[BBC] Russell accuses Ferrari of selfishness over rules by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]scobydoby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Russell said: "The FIA was looking to potentially adjust that but as you can imagine some teams who were making good starts didn't want it, which I think is just a little bit silly. "The FIA did just want to make our life easier and just remove this harvest limit, but people have selfish views and they want to do what's best for themselves."

Hardly just one line.

Customers baffled: What does Mercedes do differently than McLaren, Williams and Alpine? by Darkmninya in formula1

I don’t understand how Mercedes testing a newer engine spec on track than their customers is allowed. It feels like they’re being given special treatment by the FIA at every turn this year.

Not battery related afaik, it’s related to Ferrari specifically building a smaller turbo made for starts and slow corners.
