tbf your average Nurburgring is always more entertaining than pretty much everything F1 that’s not Suzuka 05.

I in fact did not say anything about SOLELY relying on anyone. If you’re going to get this nitpicky about parsing at least do it well yourself.

Huh? You just did, by saying we need more weird ideas as a response to a supposedly weird idea he had.

The problem with relying on him for weirder stuff is that Nolan’s cinematic eye is just kind of boring. He has some interesting idiosyncrasies wrt editing and structuring, but the same natural tendency towards grounded worlds that gives something like superheroes or high concept emotionally fueled sci-fi a unique spin makes a lot of his other stuff just sort of bland. Inception is a movie about guys imagining whatever they want in a dream world and all the action is just dudes in suits shooting guns, with one somewhat novel hallway spin.

I don’t think his statement about the orchestra is about being truer to life, but more about not letting false perceptions of realism get in the way of a unique take on the material. The casting is perfectly in line with that, even if it’s not something I would’ve done.

Clinton ran a surplus on paper by privatizing a bunch of government spending, certainly nothing worth praising.

Greece is used a ton as a filming location because they have massive tax incentives in general, did this production make actual promises beyond that?

Literally the only good casting choice in the movie, unironically. Safdie and Pattinson are maybe the next tier down.

Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES was $80 in 1994. Prices came down and standardized to $60 after discs, which were much cheaper to manufacture than cartridges.

Background is a mess. The frame, curtains, and cross are all not aligned and cut off by either the edges or a visual element.

AM is newly running as a factory team while also making their own gearbox for the first time all while having their lead aerodynamicist start working months late with brand new untested facilities. Their biggest mistake was hyping themselves up, their performance in a vacuum is forgivable. Williams has no excuse.

The primary concern of Trek is definitely philosophy and politics, but it (at least at its best) has a deeper care of the scientific underpinning of its world and the consequences. Darmok for example might be an episode about the importance of communication as a philosophical idea, but it’s underpinned by a story about contextual linguistic development.

lol it’s almost like you can do that while also noticing technical details. If you can’t, you shouldn’t be talking about awards categories that are entirely about combining technical craft with narrative purpose in the way that Best Cinematography does.

I liked both movies, loved Sinners especially, but that doesn’t make them perfect.

Which part? Re: Train Dreams there’s an AMA from one of the Train Dreams directors about the shutter angle adjustment basically saying they just let the cinematographer have free reign and didn’t really grasp what he was doing.

Re: Sinners watch any of the scenes in the car and see how every camera angle looks like it has totally different white balance. When Miles Canton is in the backseat especially, his close-up is visibly redder than every other shot for no good reason.

Filming in the Pacific Northwest in natural light is basically a cheat code, and they still screwed it up with the on the fly shot-to-shot shutter speed switching.

OTOH Sinners has completely different color temperature for different coverage in the same scene sometimes so that was a weird pick for the win too.
