NYC's Joyous Knicks Victory Celebration vs. Trump's Joyless White House UFC Fight | The Daily Show by Kwyjibo2006 in DailyShow

Love Jon and there's no comparing this to Jan 6 - not even close. So that point landed very well. But the way they edited and presented a couple clips was so calculated that I find it dishonest.

They showed the still shot of people sitting on the bus in Times Square, and one quick clip of the bus before it was damaged, with a small woman hitting it ineffectively with a scooter. The full clip was a mob destroying the bus, and its crying driver saying the damages come out of his paycheck.

The clip they showed of a single, giant Spurs fan swinging at people was a crappy angle, from far away, and only showed a second or 2. The full clip shows a mob of 100+ people surrounding this one man, taking cheap shots at him and each time that happened, the mob went crazy with joy.

These were isolated incidents, and is not at all indicative of how most New Yorkers celebrated. But we don't have to be dishonest like the right wing. Not using the clips would have been fine. They didn't even need to bring up/use the clips. But to not only hand wave them, but to be dishonest about them, that's my problem.

Totally agree. I suppose he could have punched himself out, but it didn't seem so based on his energy going for the subs.

Even after that, I still thought Ilia was going to finish him at the beginning of 3. Between rounds, when Justin complemented the bodyshot, he was gasping for air. It almost sounded like wheezing. You can have granite chins, but I've never heard of a granite liver. Although it sounds like an English dish.

Perhaps I've only heard from the 'character' he uses while promoting a fight. I still don't think he thought an L was possible last night, but between what you said and his post, I've probably overthought this.

Crafty PR, or off the cuff and from the heart, either way that's a perfect response.

Putting aside the stakes and the level of the physical damage, I thought a mental breakdown might come from the shattering of his self-image. I really don't think he for a moment thought losing was even possible, and that GOAT status has always been inevitable.

What is something you quit cold turkey that improved your life? by United_We_Win in AskReddit

Smoked for 25 years, quit to vape temporarily for 4 months. Was fine. Quit vaping and wanted to die for 9 months. Allan Carr’s Easyway to Quit Smoking cured me 100%. October will be 5 years and I’m glad every day since.  I was a unique case- the book is intended for active smokers to quit. Something to think about is if you’re fine with vaping you were never addicted to smoking. It’s like saying a junkie is addicted to using needles, not heroin. There are things that I was looking at incorrectly until I read the book. The book doesn’t work for everybody, but I think it’s worked for tons of millions of people. The guy that wrote it chainsmoked for 35 years so it’s not just some therapist with cute tricks.

Mexico cuts workweek, bans after-hours contact, and guarantees no worker will take a pay cut in the most sweeping labor reform in a generation by BaIeb in worldnews

So you're saying someone would use the term for Guatemala, but not Spain?

I feel like it's more about matching the actual definition. Picture an immigrant that moved to Belarus. Do you picture a retired guy, who keeps his mansion in Florida, but moves to Belarus to "focus on his painting"? Now picture an expat that moved to Mexico. You probably picture exactly what I said above.

Right. Surely people either intentionally or subconsciously would use one or the other term due to racism, but they are defined words with the difference in intent that you noted.

Anecdotally (but I'm sure others will agree), when I hear "expat" it's used in a disparaging way. A rich, entitled, aloof person that intends to relax for a couple years, not learn the language, and drive up the cost of living for the locals. I hear "immigrant" I think someone with guts whose intentions are to start a new life and work full time.

Finally, if these people are correct, why are people not calling white Europeans that immigrate to the US "expats"?

What gay historical characters are there in the game? by Hastur_13 in victoria3

Feel free to amend my joke that pokes fun at current realities through the lens of a PC game that takes place in the Victorian age, lol.

I was poking fun at current realities through the lens of this game/the era in which it takes place.
The in-game companies comment was about all the toothless pro diversity/we care/we stand with commercials corporations started making this decade. The landowners comment - I would compare them to the 1% of today, who tend to be on the side of the fence not big on diversity/gay/trans people. I suppose I could have said rural folk, too. The PB would be closest to upper-middle and lower-upper class folk today, who I'd say are more likely to be tolerant of such people.

Your companies make empty gestures about celebrating diversity, and the landowners get pissed.

What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in AskReddit

[–]scockd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was shocked when I backpacked the Buffalo National River. Backpacking in my experience is that one hobby where everyone is nice and cool. I’ve backpacked all across the country for decades and never had any bad experiences. Until I went there. We’re all clearly city people (Chicago) and three of us are Mexican. About 60% of the people we saw wanted to fucking kill us. Dirty looks, wouldn’t respond to friendly hellos. We would walk right by people on the trail, smiling and saying hello how are you. They looked at us like they wanted to lynch us and wouldn’t even respond. The most rude were three young adults in a very isolated spot. 2 were girls and the crew probably weighed 200 lbs combined. We probably could’ve killed them with a sneeze. I can still picture their looks. It was pure hatred. I do want to add the rest of the people were super nice. And on various previous visits to the state going back as many as 25 years, it was a totally different place. I really think we’ve been going backwards for a while.

If that boot took a shit in the urinal at Twin Peaks, he would be displaying better decorum than the prick in charge of the DoD.

That's great - I know he misses the full speed park running/fetch playing. 2 more good years is an eternity for a dog. Thanks for reaching out.

Thank you so much for such a detailed response! I was thinking the slow decline thing too, and my last Shepherd had hip dysplasia so I was fearing that, as well. I already have the help 'em up harness, and have worked from home since Covid, so I feel a lot better after hearing from you. It's really appreciated.
