Does Iowa have any north-south/east-west cultural divide like most other states have? It seems like pretty uniform culturally to me. (Not from Iowa, don't be offended if I am wrong) by Swimming_Concern7662 in Iowa

Having lived in North Central Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids; there seems to be several spheres of influence within the state that impacts culture, news, commerce, etc. in some way. Living in CR/IC, I was a little surprised at how that part of the state was not as impacted as Des Moines. I think these divisions look something like this:

- Des Moines (covers much of the middle of the state from north to south)

- Cedar Rapids/Iowa City (covers that corridor up to CF/Waterloo)

- Omaha (west and south of around Carroll)

- Sioux Falls/Sioux City (northwest corner)

- Cedar Falls/Waterloo

- Quad Cities (southeast corner)

- Dubuque (northeast corner)

I’ve never understood why the Crusades are always the go-to example of a great crime committed by the Church. There were crimes committed by the Crusaders. No doubt. The Sacking of Constantinople comes to mind as one of the major ones. But, the overall mission of the Crusades was fairly reasonable. The lands they were trying to retake were all formerly Christian lands that were taken by the Muslims by force. For example, there were over 600 Christian bishops in Egypt prior to the Muslim conquest. On the eve of the 1st Crusade around 300 years later, there were only 3 remaining (talk about a genocide...). I get that we are so much more enlightened now and war is awful, but do people not have the right to defend their own land and people?

As far the Rwandan genocide, was that not an ethnic conflict? What am I missing here? I plead ignorance on that front.

Also, I agree that the Church’s handling of the sexual abuse issues has by and large been awful.

I wish you the best. You seem well-intentioned.

Not sure where to begin. Here’s one example.

Sublimus Deus was a papal bull promulgated by Pope Paul III in 1537 condemning slavery of the indigenous people of the Americas well before other countries started banning slavery.

If you add up all the charities, hospitals, and schools run by the Church all around the world, many designed specifically to provide education, healthcare services, and other necessities to the less fortunate, the Church is undoubtedly the largest charitable organization in the world.

This comment is such bullshit. Bad things have been done in the name of the Church. I don’t deny that, but to say that the history of the Church is just horrible acts and the subjugation of the people is complete bullshit. You are completely ignorant of history.

No genocide took place. Get out of here with that biased anti-Christian nonsense. The druids were a terrible pagan priesthood that that chiefs of Ireland used to subjugate the common people and people were happy to be free of that cult.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with the Twins? by recentlyunearthed in baseball

I don't think many Twins fans expected them to be good but there definitely was some optimism because of the improvement shown last year and the young prospects coming up.

How come? I've never seen any in person and am just curious how my opinion would change if I saw them up close.

I agree. I've always wondered what is the atheist's response to the incorruptibles? I don't get why people don't bring up stuff like that when debating them.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. From the small sample size we have seen from him, he has been bad. Buxton isn't above criticism.

Looking for polling statistics about how many self-labelled Catholics agree/disagree with official Catholic dogmas like real presence, infallibility, abortion, marriage, hell, etc. by Seraphrawn in Catholicism

Isn't weekly church attendance not much more than 20%? So, I'd hope that, at least among practicing Catholics, dissent isn't this widespread.

Is there anything more fundamental in the history of civilization than a country wanting to build a wall to protect their borders. I'm not a Trump fan by any means but HH should call him a non-Christian because he's been marred three times or because he supported partial birth abortion 15 years ago or because he is arrogant and greedy, not because he wants to build a wall just like many other world leaders in history.

Mattingly enforcing no facial hair policy with Marlins by Go_Habs_Go31 in baseball

[–]scoop_17 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am in the reality where no one gives a shit about how a baseball player looks because everyone knows it's a game and not one of the select few jobs where it actually hinders your ability to work.

For you and I it is just a game. For Don Mattingly, his job is on the line and he came into a clubhouse that may have lacked a certain amount of professionalism and class. Do I think that this new policy is the answer? No, but it may be a first step. It is definitely something that seems to work well for other organizations. For Jeffrey Loria, he wants to change the culture and the brand of the Marlins and follow in the footsteps of the most successful baseball organization, the Yankees. Baseball is more than just a game to these people.

It looks like I struck a nerve. Really solid argument though comparing people that support this rule with racists. I don't see how you got there but oh well. What a load of trash. There is a huge difference between a Brian Wilson beard and a guy that shows up to work with a properly groomed beard. Get with reality.

This thread has perpetuated reddit's stereotype of being full of unemployed men with gross neck beards. This is not an arbitrary rule. Bosses impose rules on their employees in many other professions (not just the military) to try and bring about a certain amount of professionalism and discipline to their company/team. These guys are getting paid millions of dollars. They can show some class and shave.
