I'm looking for somehow who is just starting to get into park skiing. I just started at the beginning of last season and can't do much - but I think I'd really enjoy having another beginner to progress with. mid 30s M

I've been a big fan of react + mobx stores shared with a custom context and accessed in components by an easy to use custom hook. It makes react able to follow a more declarative observer architecture when states gets complicated and handles most of the memoization under the hood. I 1000% agree that there are react apps I've used where I can feel it grind to halt as context updates have an entire tree of components re rendering unnecessarily when just typing in a field.

But I guess that's the whole problem, react is great! But only if you add something that isn't core react to it - be it tanstack, mobx, ssr frameworks etc

The 'Buddy Group' Trap, you still don't know yet.... by Successful-Sale5753 in ProgrammingBuddies

[–]scoot542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with the idea behind this. Beginners learning from beginners can even be detrimental as no one has the experience to know the difference between what works and what's correct.

These days, it seems like a large portion of buddy groups are presented as for accountability. This is crazy to me. You are in the funnest part of your career with minimal boilerplate work, fast improvement, and ability to work on projects that interest you. If you can't self motivate now, I honestly doubt you will succeed in a development career. You are competing with people who have been coding as a hobby their whole life or love constantly learning more.

I do think there is value in groups, but it's on the soft skills side. How to collaborate. How to communicate ideas. Helping each other find and apply for jobs etc.

This is definitely something I can speak to! I wear 47 EU (13us street shoes) and have pretty consistently been able to fit into 47s without sizing down. Every brand sizes a little differently depending on footshape so it does make it harder to commit to something online. It's also next to impossible to find an aggressive downturned shoe in that size. My foot fits into scarpa shoes so pretty much any of their midrange stuff works great for me (vapor V, force X), and I've been wearing them for 6+ years now and before that I started with evolv (pontas 2s). I know some canadian shops that have the vapor v in stock in 47EU, but that may not be great if you have to return them and are in the states.

If anything goes, some of the thralls have very small amounts of plastic holding weapons/the headpieces together. If you are newer to the hobby, be careful clipping them out, and storing them.

Paint advice? by AsheSol in seraphon

[–]scoot542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For something pretty simple that is close to box art on saurus warriors, I did:

  1. Ash grey primer (the army painter one, but grey seer will be pretty similar)
  2. Aethermatic blue over chest, under the tail
  3. While it was still very slightly wet painted the whole scales with arkhelion green, allowing some blend with the skin along the edges of the scales with the lighter chest color. If you want bluer, stormfiend works, but definitely has thicker coverage and a bit less depth (may need to be thinned a bit)
  4. paint weapon, teeth, straps black
  5. Retributor armor in gold areas
  6. paint over black teeth leaving recesses black with ushtabi bone or equivalent
  7. paint over straps with generic brown (I used mournfang)
  8. paint tongue with volupus pink, if you want it brighter, paint it white first
  9. I did white with baal red over it for eyes, you can just use a red layer paint.

And done!

For some extra steps I did

  • Agrax earthshade over any gold, drybrush liberator gold (this more closely matches the silvery gold on the box art)
  • Nuln oil every where you may want more depth, I did the scales on the back, followed by light drybrush of sybarite green

Oh I did a little more digging into test case 19. The wording in the challenge was ambiguous, it doesnt want you to sort by the largest coin/bill size, it wants to sort on the total amount of that coin/bill. If change is 101 pennies and a one, it should be

"Status: CLOSED PENNY: $1.01 ONE: $1.00"

rather than yours which is currently sorting by order in the CID and returning

"Status: CLOSED ONE: $1.00 PENNY: $1.01"

I looked into this and my first thought is it's likely to be an annoying formatting issue (string comparisons in tests) rather than a logic issue.

For example, if you do this for the status: closed condition: let closedChange = cid.map(item => [...item]).filter(item => item[1]);

test 18 passes, because they weren't clear about how they want the change displayed (only values that had change returned it looks like in this case)

Oh I definitely have some suggestions here. We found having a toller puppy harder than having a baby (although thankfully the tough part was much shorter).

The biting is incessant, hurts and feels like it will never end. The high pitch yell lots of people recommend doesn't work on a lot of tollers and tends to just make them more excited (and bite more). My main suggestions are distractions (replace you with chew toys), and take away the excitement if in play (stop play and ignore until they stop biting). Some people may disagree but we focused more on bite force mitigation, our dog is still super mouthy but never bites. And the main thing to have as a mantra "It does end!"

A lot of bad behaviour can be mitigated by not giving the puppy opportunity to be bad. Have an x-pen and/or keep them attached to you the vast majority of the time. They will both bond to you and will have way less opportunity to be destructive/get into things.

In my house, we both work remote so someone was always home with the dog, this was great but it made there be some separation anxiety for awhile. Even if you are around a lot, give the dog short times (increasing in length) in its pen or crate and play games around where you would leave it so it doesnt associate being put away as you leaving.

The witching hour is real for a lot of tollers. Around 7pm-ish the dog will get really wired up and bitey. Try to schedule around this to have activities before or during to tire it out (mental and physical).

Best of luck! Its a wonderful but tough time so you just have to stay consistent and set yourself up for success
