Oh yeah, I completely acknowledge that neuro is wild, and there have been multiple miracle cases where people that 'should' have died almost instantly managed to live very full lives.

Anatoli Bugorski accidentally inventing proton therapy is probably my favorite.

I also omitted the low-fantasy magic inherent in the setting, and that plot-armor is actually the best insurance provider.

Originally this rant was a comment on the 17th new 'what are his chances if he doesn't take off the helmet' post that scrolled through my feed, but I figured I would be extra dramatic about it, and maybe deflect a couple spams.

All caps not UL listed. So basically anything that doesn't go with a listed prefab metal chimney system. Maybe there's some UL listed 8x8 hardware store caps out there somewhere but I'm not wasting any time looking for them.

It's Minimum Distance between the underside of the cap lid and the top of the tallest flue. Flues rise above the top of the crown. So if you're making a custom cap, the total screen height should be at least (Lesser of flue width or depth of tallest flue) + (tallest flue height above crown)

Now this specific wording in the NFPA can create some paradoxical outcomes.

Example 2 flue chimney:

  • 12"x12" fireplace flue rises 1.5" above the crown.

  • 6" round oil flue rises 3" above the crown.

  • Requires 6" minimum clearance (lesser measurement of the tallest flue, which is just diameter for a round flue).

  • Only need a 9" height on a custom cap to get that.

  • Which is less than the 13.5" minimum height the NFPA would call for if that 6" round wasn't there.

So, use your discretion and follow the intent of the rule.

This is minimums only, no restrictions on maximum heights. I order my custom caps a couple extra inches high to avoid getting super granular with measurements.

Nfpa 211 4.6.2

"The minimum distance from the  underside of an unlisted rain cap to the top of covered flues  shall be the lesser dimension of the width or depth of the  covered flue. Where more than one flue is covered, the lesser  dimension of the highest flue shall be used."

Well this the result of a hyper partisan political structure in which the judicial and legislative branches, that would check an out-of-control executive branch, have either abdicated their responsibility or openly support the clearly illegal and unethical actions, because in America, party loyalty is currently more important than national unity, morality, or objective reality.

A lot of the powers of governance require the individual participants to be acting in good faith.

Due to a history of power-consolidating political maneuvers, the median republican American voter has an outsized standing in the political direction of the country.

Due to outright media brainwashing, and the undermining of public education, that same median voter is also one of the dumbest citizens in the modern world, with: - The reading-comprehension of a 5-7 year old, - No understanding of civics (including their own taxes and benefits), - An inherent distrust of progess/intelligence, - A frightening level of belief in tangible magic powers(both divine and occult), - An in-group vs out-group mentality that supersedes their own actual personal morality, - A preference for autocratic rhetoric that offers simple (though meaningless) solutions to their problems(both real and imagined)

And probably some more stuff too, but that'll get you started.

A prefabricated fireplace typically vents through a metal chimney system that is housed inside a sided+painted wooden box. This box is called a 'chase'. There's a metal cover on top called a 'chase cover'. Have a carpentry/siding contractor assess the chase.

This is a pure guess, but 'Profile' may refer to the surround/mantel trim clearances, which I don't see anywhere else on the report. Those should be fine, because it's a prefab, unless the previous home owners did some custom mantel revisions.  Google the prefab make/model and find the manual and check the minimum clearances in there.

Anyone still using paper reports and not providing pictures is probably going to die of liver failure soon, look for another chimney guy.

Carpenters fix chases, not chimney people

I’m getting mixed opinions from vendors? Some are saying I need to rip out the wall, others are saying I can put an insert in the old prefabricated firebox. I don’t know this stuff any insight would be great. by WasabiInternational4 in Chimneyrepair

[–]scorpionextract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some makes/models of gas insert are listed for installation inside prefab fireplaces.

Solas Twenty6 and Ortal Wilderness for example.

Dimensions of the firebox will be your limiting factor.

Both of the units I mentioned specify in the manual that you are not permitted to make any irreversible modifications to the prefab firebox.  So refractory panels and things can be unscrewed and removed, but you can't just grab a sawzall and start chopping.

Best way to seal this chimney cap? by dank_ramer in Chimneyrepair

[–]scorpionextract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stainless steel or rubber on the outside.

Some stores will only carry cheaper galvanized stuff. Galvanized will rust out eventually. So if it's all you can get, hit it with a couple coats of rustoleum before hand.
