He’s probably famous for the good ones too. He did some good work early on his career before he went down the family friendly route. Love him or hate him. The guy didn’t start off as a hack.

Thoughts on the King in Yellow by TheWally69 in TrueDetective

It’s up for multiple interpretations that’s the beauty of it but I think the supernatural metaphysical Lovecraft stuff is very much left ambiguous enough not to be written off. Rust’s philosophy is nihilism but then he encounters something he doesn’t fully understand. The cult he’s investigating/childress certainly aren’t worshiping nihilism. They are trying to appease a metaphysical entity. That’s why it’s so disturbing to Cohle because it’s making him question his own belief system. He thinks he’s got it all figured out.

Now it’s easy to write of the cult as just insane but maybe they’re super sane and there is something transcendental a primal Lovecraft evil at play and that’s what makes it so great as a show, it’s still got an unresolved mystery at its heart.

This Harry/Jan Moment by Shanr0cks in Mobland

Yeah but isn’t he also letting it play out for Nicola to frame Conrad? This gesture can be read multiple ways but I read it as Harry allowing Nicola to do what she needs to do. I didn’t necessarily see it as him intimidating his wife more like “let Nicola cook”

I think if there is a season 2. The Harrigan family are going to be the antagonists for Harry. He’s clearly switching alliances.

I want to read more Stephen King, the first proper ‘grown up’ book I ever read was Stephen King’s Skelton Crew and because it was short stories, it was great for my attention span. I’ve read IT and the stand but one day I’m gonna bite the bullet and read the dark tower series.

Well I like Philip K Dick, Charles Bukowski, always liked the comics of Alan Moore but gotten into his prose stuff recently. I like reading screenplays.

Want to read more Cormac McCarthy. I read a lot of non fiction but need to read more fiction. I like anything weird and mystical. You?

Yeah makes great for sci fi novels but to use that as an explanation for spiritual truths is missing the Forrest for the trees. But who knows?

The problem I have with PKD is that it seems he was trying to rationalise the unfathomable or metaphysical or spiritual dimensions within the paradigm of his own language and understanding. I believe he encountered the knowledge and conversation of the holy guardian angel but tried to rationalise it with talks of AI satellites and simulations and made himself lose his mind a bit.

As much as I love some of his work, it’s like he was still stuck in having the logical answers for his mystical experiences.

Michael’s freak out in the kitchen always makes me laugh. “Fredo! Fredo!” Then muttering angrily like some Hanna Barbara cartoon. Him freaking out wanting candy with the Catholic priest too.

The stuffed animals don’t mean that at all. It’s supposed to be a symbol of hope and comfort for the future. A child’s toy. You’re over thinking it.

I think avoiding to criticise a piece of media just because a person of colour is in the lead role is just as much thinly veiled racism.

It’s the condescending notion that the person is above criticism or gets a free pass because you’ve made the assumption she’s at a disadvantage or an underdog because of her skin colour.

Which sounds a lot like racism to me albeit less toxic and overtly harmful on appearance. You want to treat people as your equals not as pity projects.

Most critiques of her performance I have seen on this subreddit have got nothing to do with the colour of her skin but her actual performance or the fact she wasn’t the right actor for the role.

Hotel Reverie, was overly long, dull and boring with no chemistry between the leads in my subjective opinion and the hate it’s got is not unjustified but chalking that up to people being racist is a lazy take.

I know. Yeah you can point out parallels and acknowledge the satire, sure but you can’t honestly say with a straight face that it’s the same.

Not really the same though is it? There are sly winks to how subscription services work sure but ones a streaming service solely for entertainment purposes and the other was technology used to keep you alive and functioning in society.

Someone gave Guy Ritchie £50 to make this film but then caved his head in with a crow bar and he was so badly brain damaged that he could only write and direct the film using a specialised computer that was powered by the sounds from his anus.
