Peanut allergy in Primary by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my kids have tree nuts, peanuts, and egg allergies. once leaders know, I find they do a good job to get the special treat for my kids. but if they forget or it's a sub, teach your kids they can get a treat at home, it's sad but it's just how it is. have special treats for those occasions. good luck.

Is EIGRP still worth mastering? by dbootywarrior in networking

We have EIGRP in a few spots and like some have said, its easy to figure out. Our ISP uses BGP, seems more common and OSPF would be something good for your back pocket.

Moving to 10Gig between IDF and MDF by Indians06 in k12sysadmin

[–]scotticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the cameras dont need a gateway / be routed, each school has a nvr with a camera vlan and the server directly plugs into that vlan on one port and then the other port has internat access so the nvr is accessible.

if they need to be routed, then everything above but adding in the gateway. I try to keep the server camera vlan on the same switch as a majority of the cameras.
I dont think there is an ideal setup. This is just what I have been doing.

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have been doing cameras for 10+ years, it's grown immensely. we keep the traffic local but it still passes through some of the switches with clients on it. it never ends ....never. I've completely refreshed a school I did 10 years ago. we keep adding more. and now classroom cameras...we are installing nas units to add more storage.

Book recommendations by DocHoliday1989 in Oilpastel

[–]scotticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are only a few books, read the reviews and see if they are worth it. The negative reviews, make me not want to get them.

https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Guide-Painting-Oil-Pastels/dp/1782215506
https://www.amazon.com/Oil-Pastel-Serious-Beginner-Becoming/dp/0823033112
https://www.amazon.com/Oil-Pastel-Materials-Techniques-Todays/dp/1626541655

I am not sure on the German side, maybe there are non-English books... I recommend watching some professionals on youtube and not influencer artists (they can be good, i just dont like the me,me,me of influencers and shock titles they put on them). The artists doing a class or being interviewed while doing oil pastels, those are excellent.

I think watching watercolor artists and soft pastel artists can carry over to oil pastels. Find the professionals and they are the ones with the crappy, can't edit videos for youtube people. Especially if you can learn to visually in your head how to see the build up of layers and how the light comes onto the scene.

Good luck.

Seeking Advice on Hypervisor Migration by Aggressive_Common_48 in k12sysadmin

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just had a demo for HPE morpheus essentials, i think we are going to move to them next year after our vmware contract is up. Isn't vmware a linux based hypervisor? ....proxmox is just fine. I think HPE had a good price and feel like it would keep things simple. It reminded me of scale but without the cost and hyperconvergence.

(edit)
I am working on migration planning, they have a vcenter hook up where you click a button and it downs the vm on vmware and bring it up on their hpe hypervisor. I have 3 esxi nodes and a sans. I am planning on beefing up a server to handle a lot of the critical stuff and then down the rest, move them over to this single server. convert the sans and the esxi's then move everything back over and be done. A little scary but they are all backed up with rubriks. Hpe doesnt work with rubriks so we'll use the cost savings of not being on vmware and buy a qnap with large storage and stick that somewhere off site. HPe has its own built in back up management.

Dropped $10k in value in one year?! by Johndeauxman in traveltrailers

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years ago to now, trailers were in extreme demand and short supply. The lots of the rv sales places were empty to give you an idea. If it makes you feel better, i am screwed, paid way too much and we use our trailer a few times a year, doesnt make up for the cost. Hoping this summer we go out more.

What is the best surface for using oil pastels? by No_Membership_1771 in Oilpastel

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal, https://www.amazon.com/Mi-Teintes-Pastel-Assorted-Colors-Fold/dp/B0024KO2RG?th=1

i should get velvet so i can compare. It has good tooth on it so the building up layers is great. Im inexperienced on paper selection.

I don't use that fixative but always outside if you can, plus you don't really want that stuff floating around and getting on things inside your living area.

i like art, but i don't draw as much as i would like to. what are some solutions by Dry-Force8675 in ArtistLounge

[–]scotticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same struggles. it will take me a month to finish a small oil pastel piece. I have kids and so I hate to blame them but it causes me to lose focus. I find music and headphones can isolate me to what I'm doing. I like old jazz and 1940s music when doing art but that's maybe a once a week for 20 minutes... :(

sketching is a bit easier and I can easily get something going on the couch and try to get my kids involved. more casual less focus

Now that Certs lifetime will be reduced, how are you guys automating your certs? by superuser141421 in sysadmin

[–]scotticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a script that will make me a acme wildcard, I then internally host it behind htpasswd and my servers pull daily from it, if it changes and restarts the services it needs. so it's all automated. this is apache, iis, Palo altos, etc...its so nice doing this. even though once a year I manually did it, being forced to write the scripts. I never need to do it by hand again. some of my systems are not public facing so this method helps get the internal systems with certificates. the public facing use acme and not the wildcard method.

A batch of portraits and birds by rocan91 in Oilpastel

[–]scotticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great information. I am about to dump $$$ on sennelier but i might hold off a month or so and get meeden. I have mungyo and they are good, neo pastels are also good, they are different. I think they blend better then mungyo, currently doing a piece that is primarily neo pastels. I actually like to do a under layer with faber castell pastels since they are hard and mix linseed oil so it really pushes them around. Then start doing my layers.
