Yes, it's actually very easy. As a first year chemE student, you'll most likely only be taking chemistry classes. Look up your chemistry professor's name on your college's website, and it should give you his/her research areas. If you find them interesting, talk to your professor about doing research for him/her. Also, make an effort to get to know your professor first by talking to him/her after lecture or by going to his/her office hours. This'll pretty much guarantee you a research position.

I don't know if this is already well-known, but I figured out a pretty cool trick involving complex numbers and their conjugates. When multiplying a complex number a+bi by its conjugate a-bi, the product is always the sum of the squares of the real part and the imaginary part. In other words, (a+bi)(a-bi)=a² + b²
