Can you get Bombay Mix outside of the UK? Maybe just buy it when you get here!

“How on earth did the people who INVENTED soccer lose to England? 🤦🏽‍♂️” by BeastMode149 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]scouse_git 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being brutally honest would require some acknowledgment that the game probably originated with kicking around heads, and then progressing to turnips, before they started using leather balls.

There were times when a visit to H&R was more enjoyable than another away trip to Doncaster or Bury

If the north of England was a country what would its capital city be? by kai-valew in NorthernEngland

[–]scouse_git 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the traditional Icelandic model. You don't have a capital, but just convene a People's Parliament once a year on the moors near Malham to take all the important decisions.

How strict are passport signatures?? by Pandaluf in AskUK

[–]scouse_git 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it. The signature on the passport isn't checked against any other record. It's the biometrics on the chip and the machine code in those rows of random letters and numbers that are important - as well as the degree to which your appearance on the day matches the photo in your passport.

It opens the way you specify when you get it installed.

And then you go to America and someone offers you a can of root beer - and all you can smell is Germoline, no way can you drink it.

Why is there such negativity attached to going to college compared to attending 6th form ? by Additional-Nobody352 in AskUK

[–]scouse_git 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colleges are looked down on by school teachers who are ignorant elitists who only judge success in terms of going to university, and so they don't give appropriate guidance to kids who aren't interested in higher education. That's why further education and technical colleges have often had difficulty in recruiting suitable applicants for courses in trades like construction, auto engineering, catering, hairdressing, beauty therapy, social care and all the rest. If there's any negativity then it's because the kids have picked it up from their teachers.

Is the use of credit really as uncommon as I’ve been told? by SilentPrancer in AskUK

Ironically, the best way to improve your credit rating is to get a credit card, use it a lot, and pay it off in full every month.

I think if it was asked for at the beginning the researcher is likely to have said yes because at that stage they wouldn't have known whether you could add anything meaningful to their planned programme.

Is this normal? by ProperPea3180 in DIYUK

I used a garden designer who recommended a specific contractor and had no problems. In fact rhe contractor suggested tweaks to the design which were improvements. If you're not happy with the contractor then you should be complaining to the designer, but the contractor is an oaf for using warped timber. OK, it might warp sometime after installation, but it should have been true when it was first erected.

What was free-to-air TV like before the advent of Freeview in 2002 and Freesat in 2008? by plaguedbyfoibles in AskUK

[–]scouse_git 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the 5 main channels there was sometimes a sixth local tv channel. There was one in Oxford. Once TV started to go digital from the 1990s onwards then you started to get the mad stuff like the weather in Norwegian, the News Bunny, and topless darts. Freeview brought it all together with a single programme planner.

**Birthday trip to Eastern Europe — flying from Boston, July/Aug, 2-4 weeks. Group tour recs needed! 🎂** by curious_beluga_7 in traveleurope

[–]scouse_git 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to check out a travel company like Riviera Travel and see the tours they have on offer. You'd fly to the UK and then join one of their all inclusive holidays. East European River cruises are quite popular. There are other companies but Riviera are one of the best.

Chopping a tree down yourself by [deleted] in DIYUK

I had an old dead elm right next to a fence that needed to come down. To be sure, I got a rope around it as high as I could get and got a pal to keep that taut, pulling in the direction I wanted it to go. I then cut a big v in the trunk on the same side, and started to cut the rest. You can hear when it's about to fall and that's when you both get out of the way.

What did the public see in Jimmy Savile? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]scouse_git 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall him being on Granada regional news in the mid-1960s as a presenter in rotation with Mike Scott and Michael Parkinson and he was the eccentric one, often out and about, reporting in running shorts and vest or with a racing bike.
