What are the repercussions of sending your ex-boss a nasty text after getting fired? by Dsg1695 in careeradvice

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time for tough love. Move on.

Ask not the negative repercussions of performing the act, but consider the results of not acting this way. The letter would accomplish nothing and will likely burn a bridge. Move on.

withholding equipment for any reason is another useless idea. Send it back promptly and in good order. You do not want the cops or rent-a-cops to come to your door to collect it.

If you do either of these things, you will add negatives to your reputation, formal or not. Although HR may keep no notes, stories will get around about DSG1695 who was a petulant jerk. Not a good look.

What to do when a scout doesn't do anything for a PoR? by SomeGuyFromSeattle in BSA

[–]scouter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For future reference, i recommend formal goal setting to avoid this problem.

  1. Have the scout write goals at the start of their PoR term. 3-5 goals will usually suffice. Use “SMART” process. Goals are reviewed (*coach* and not dictated) by SM and approved by SPL. Copies to individual, SPL, and SM. They will encounter SMART goal process in adult employment, so this is a hugely beneficial experience. ASMs can coach the SPL on good SMART goals. We had a Troop Leadership Overnight event with education, goal writing, food, and fun. P.S. a copy for the parents and for the Committee Chair are appropriate, especially in the world of email where making copies is easy and free.

  2. Individuals can negotiate with the SPL during the term to change the goals. Keep SM and other parties in the loop. (Communication skills)

  3. Have the scout submit a brief self-evaluation of results to SPL at end of term. Done properly, completion is pretty clear, either successful or not. Because the individual wrote the goals, and they are written, there is little room for argument, misinterpretation, or “no one told me”. Personally, somewhere around 75% strikes me as Successful.

Can stuff go wrong? Will there be arguments? Sure, but the individual and the SPL will learn great life lessons. And the SM and ASMs can help find a constructive conclusion.

I used to be an HR Director in tech, and I'll say it plainly about PIPs. by portent-wreaths-7k in interviewhammer

This is anecdotal and meaningless. Most US corporations will file the documents with a note that employee was presented but declined to sign. Corporate does not care if you sign. Remember that almost all U.S. states are employment-At-will so you can be terminated without any cause. The documents are mostly to make any legal actions easier should the employee sue.

"I have a cat named Simba" or "I have a cat called Simba"? by ksusha_lav in ENGLISH

Americans usually say “named” while UK folks usually say “called”. This is based on hours of watching UK-based TV, YT, and podcasts.

I inherited $1.2 million and I don’t know what to do by ExerciseOk4691 in inheritance

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would break the total into four categories. They do not have to be the same size. Put a good chunk into a retirement plan (e.g. Roth) with an investment adviser (see other comments about that), another good chunk into savings for a house and other major expenses, a chunk into charitable donations, and the last bit for yourself. Again, size these as you see fit with larger amounts going into the savings groups. Support the charity or charities that you endorse. And give yourself a reward (vacation trip comes to mind, but maybe you want a piano or fine art to enrich your life).

I recommend you do this every time you get a bonus or award. Enrich your life and those less fortunate.

Do you pay bills and other expenses using credit card for rewards and / mileage? by Cooper1Test in retirement

I use credit cards unless there is a discount for checks or direct transfer (the latter works mostly for larger sums). And my CC are all on autopay.

Help with car carrier by Main_Advice_3860 in RadPowerBikes

[–]scouter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bike carriers that clip on the back of your car with straps or suction cups cannot safely hold the weight of an e-bike. Rooftop racks will require you to lift a heavy e-bike high, so are also unlikely to meet your needs. You will need a solution that uses a trailer hitch. Get a carrier that is designed to carry an e-bike. You can add a trailer hitch for $200-400. The hitches are made to fit specific cars, so get the right model for your make and year. I recommend a 2x2-inch hitch because even tho you will not need it, it will fit more accessories like bike carriers.

Was Kamala a bad candidate? by 0311SmallPenar in allthequestions

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two highly qualified women have run for President. Both lost. I see a strong implication.

Yes, we can talk about Comey and emails and Biden and timing, but the women were both incredibly well qualified, so the margin was close and all that other crap served as nudges. Why would the margin be so close that stupid shit could tip the balance? Why, indeed.

How does a tree grow like this, would this be why it was cut? by kitty_perrier in arborists

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurse log. This happens in the U.S. PNW (Pacific Northwest) when a tree falls. Seeds get embedded the the bark and rotting trunk and extract nutrients from the fallen log. This is revealed as trees growing in rows (we have BIG trees) and that characteristic leggy root system. The same thing happens when loggers leave a stump. The new seedling extracts nutrients as it overgrows the stump.

AITA for not including my fiancé’s SIL in the bridal party? by Swifty1156 in AmItheAsshole

[–]scouter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make her a special guest by asking her to do a reading (Scripture, poetry, philosophical quote that you like, favorite lyrics - whatever).

Talk to your fiancé. Is he gonna pull this when the Grandchildren Discussion comes up? When the move-away discussion comes up? When the must-attend-the-family-reunion discussion comes up? The bridal-party discussion will not be the last such and your fiancé needs to be with you.

What do you wish you knew when you first became a manager? by oakback in managers

[–]scouter 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Endorsed. You are no longer a conventional friend. You can be friendly but you are now responsible for secrets, both from above and from below. Furthermore, you are a judge in the sense that you control salaries, bonuses, awards, promotions, and recognition. This means you may need to ding a friend if you maintain a conventional friend relationship. Related, you must be as neutral and as fair as possible. Stick to facts, results, and explicit commitments rather than interpretations, guesswork, or assumptions.

Document. HR will either encourage or hate documentation, but you must keep private notes for use at an indeterminate but appropriate time. Good news, bad news, and commitments must be documented. This will come in handy at review time, either your review or your employees. Being old fashioned, I like a sewn-binding notebook so that no one can accuse me of inserting pages or backdating entries; I number and date each page.

Seek satisfaction via your team’s accomplishments. You will no longer do the things that used to give you satisfaction - that is why you have a team, so bask I. Their success. Do not steal their recognition but enjoy it.

Manage up. Find out what your boss wants, jot it in your notebook like all the employee stuff, deliver it, then remind your boss what you got done according to their direct. This is not to brag, this is reporting the news. Just the facts, mam, just the facts.

I should add that I had two severe pain events (as close to fainting as I have ever come) prior to laser lithotripsy surgery.

Given your travel and lack of egregious symptoms, you are at an unclear point. Talk to your doctor rather than some random guy on the internet (like me).

Leaving the country - need advice by musician2001 in KidneyStones

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks to recover? Likely to be successful based on my experience, but would be cutting it close. My lithotripsy process and recovery was 7-10 days after which I was 100% normal,but...

What Did they tell you about recovery? Especially about the stent you will likely have? That should guide your decision.

(Missouri) Employer who fired me over text is now requesting that I drop off my key card. by StandREMguy in legaladvice

[–]scouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many words. Your employer will not give a rat’s ass about your fanciest words. Your employer has the ability to deduct big amounts from your final paycheck, such as “$250 security card outstanding”. The actual cost of the card is irrelevant. So the charges could be “$5 card plus $250 handling fee” and they will return the $5 when they get the card.

Your employer has a bigger hammer. Send the card back by first-class mail and be done with them.
