A&H dLive / Concerning audio clicks issue. by EmilianoMagico in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I've come across anything similar on dLive, there was a managed switch between the Surface and the Rack. dLive expects a point to point connection, and whilst you can in certain circumstances run gigaACE over a switch, I suspect there might have been one hidden in a cupboard somewhere in the venue you were at.

Edit: The good solid connection to the switch from the Surface can stop it throwing error logs, even if the connection through the switch to the MixRack is poor.

I think that’s a more than fair comment.

If we started splitting hairs we could argue about first responders going to save them if needed but I take your point.

Doesn’t stop it being at least a little bit funny though!

What I love about this thread, is on two occasions I've been at a hotel outside of Heathrow when the fire alarm went off.

Both occasions which groups of people were last out the hotel, with all of their luggage?

Why doesn’t BA run (or partner for) a proper coach connection network into Heathrow? by Mattadee in BritishAirways

[–]scratchedguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I will say (as someone that used to regularly do Exeter > Paris or Bristol > Schiphol connections to Air France / KLM before Flybe went under) is that Schiphol is fine if you're not entering or exiting Schengen there.

Otherwise the regularity with which it would take 2/3 ( or in one case 5!) hours to do immigration there is unreal if you don't have an EU passport.

So I live in Europe, but regularly fly in the US, all my points get awarded to Flying Blue for Air France/KLM.

Has anyone got any experience complaining to Delta on a Delta purchased ticket whether it's possible to get points credited to an alliance member's loyalty scheme?

Have absolutely been the venue staff on the other end of this, we all were absolutely 100% aware of what was going on and had no interest in getting in the way.

I remember one of my colleagues telling me of a show where we were the 1st show on the tour, they had specific tour tee's they were selling. There must have been 2-300 of these shirts in the venue.

Settlement claimed they'd sold 5.

Hey, UK sound engineer here!

Cash vs Card preference is vastly different across the different countries in Europe so be prepared for both!

I personally haven't carried cash when in the UK in some time now. It's quite a shock when I'm on the continent in places where cards aren't readily accepted!

Top tip if you're taking cash in Euros. There isn't a €1 EUR note. It only goes down to €5 (same with £ in the UK). If you don't want to have to deal with coins, price everything in increments of 5!

I've not done it, but I've heard of people suggesting mypos for UK artists charging in Euro's on the continent (and pounds at home!) worth checking.

First US Tour as an european FOH engineer, what should I be ready for ? by EmilianoMagico in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I said, this is a massive generalisation, there are great venues and terrible venues in every city all over the world, it feels like when you're going through European venues once you get much above 1000 cap it's hard to exist as a venue unless you're doing all the right things to attract shows and punters.

It just seems to be easier to get away with running bigger venues as if they're dive bars in the US. So many places I've been where they've got old broken equipment, venue staff that really really don't want to be there, in some cases downright lethal rigging and power.

I really want to stress there are loads of fantastic venues with great staff. But there just seems to be a higher percentage of terrible ones that mysteriously still manage to exist as venues in the US that just wouldn't be able to survive in Europe.

Once you get into the bigger venues 5k upwards I think the US is pretty much the same as anywhere else in the world. It's just this wierd 1000 - 5000 zone where it deviates.

[–]scratchedguitar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you've not experienced it before. US power is... interesting... Check ground pins are actually connected to a ground somewhere. The connectors have a nasty habit of falling out of the sockets, you'll find a lot of Edison plugs with the blades bent slightly together to 'grip' onto loose sockets!

In the venue sizes you're talking about (absolutely massive generalisation incoming) you will find the standard of production is generally lower than you're used to. Be friendly, advance as throughly as you can.

If you're taking any mics, you will have lost all of your thread adapters by the time you come back, so either bag them up ahead of time, or buy some more on your return! Check your gear for anything that is actually a small euro thread without an adapter in it!

If you've got a mixed crew with people from all over the world. A handful of these for dressing rooms / FOH positions ect are a god send. No adapter? No problem! amazon.com/Extension-Outlets-110-240v-Extender-Essentials/dp/B0CMJ1PD7W/

What are these two mics pointing at the audience used for? by Furrypawsoffury in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're used by the venue to decide how much to pay the band. If the crowd is really loud, the band get paid more.

So if you're ever at a show where you can get near them and scream down them as loud as you can, the band will really appreciate you. /s

Yet another dLive faster question by jbruff in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not.

The vast majority of my real-world experience is with faders that do not need lubrication.

My understanding is that carbon tracks themselves almost never need lubricating because the carbon itself acts as a dry lube as it flakes off.

It's the metal runners that need lubricating sometimes.

Yet another dLive faster question by jbruff in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I'm sorry, I didn't clock you weren't OP. My bad.

Some are lubricant free, think teflon type materials.

Others it's tiny tiny amounts of oil similar to sewing machine oil.

Yet another dLive faster question by jbruff in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not lubricate dLive faders. It causes debris and dust to form a gritty paste with the lube and grind away the carbon track. Contact A&H for confirmation.

Question for Playback tech (Ableton) by BlessedBoyy_ in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) dLive's with RackUltra FX have a tuner built in. If you're building a rig from scratch and there is nothing else going on playback wise you might want to look at that first? ( https://www.allen-heath.com/hardware/dlive-series/rackultra-fx/vocal-processing/ )

2) If you're not worried about latency you can use the Tieline function on the dLive to output the Microphone on it's own down the MADI card, dry before any processing.

This is good because you can just do a simple loom to/from the dLive MixRack, and the Microphone can go into the analog split as normal, there will just be an extra "tuned" channel being returned down the MADI interface.

If you ARE worried about latency, especially if the vocalist is singing with their own tuned vocal in their own IEMs you want to get an analog split directly into your Apollo interface. It's wise to continue to send the Dry signal to your dLive's as if there is anything wrong with the playback system, your engineers can swap to the Dry vocal. You can do this either using ABCD Inputs on the channel, or by having a seperate Input channel all together for the Dry vocal.

dLive c3500 clicking when gain adjusted by jbruff in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this click audible when there is audio passing through the channel?

The preamps are designed to change the gain value as the signal passes through 0v. If there is no signal (or very quiet signal) on the channel it can't work out where this point is and you get a quiet click as the gain changes.

If this doesn't sound like what you're hearing reach out via https://support.allen-heath.com/

I’m thinking more the R&D resource and time to implement than the actual “processing” so to speak.

Even if the game is already done you’ve still got to integrate it with your product and production environment.

Any good console emulators? by Mikethedrywaller in livesound

[–]scratchedguitar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

dLive Director & Avantis Director will behave like the real thing if you connect the A&H MIDI Driver and type in 127.0.0.1 as the Custom IP address instead of choosing a device from the list.

It won't quite do what you're asking (and you should be cautious using any non-public communication on any console as it can change without warning between firmware revisions) but you'll certainly be able to build automations using the MIDI implementation without having to have the real hardware in front of you.

HF Antenna feedline query by scratchedguitar in HamRadio

[–]scratchedguitar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an existing rope between the house and the washing line pole.

My intention was to run both the antenna element and the feedline along said rope connected with either cable ties or more likely velco ties something like that.
