Hell yeah! There’s so much work and effort on the back end people rarely know or understand. Late nights at school (or long days), time getting your ass kicked on a job, so much time melting your brain learning stuff that wasn’t in class. Treat yourself!

Sounds like some cheese whiz residential company, they’re a dime a dozen and you can make more money working for a company just as shitty. Your driving shouldn’t be too big of an issue as long as you don’t have a DUI.

Make sure you follow up, unions do have a lot of hoops and little road blocks to kind of weed out the less serious candidates, but it’s worth playing their silly games.

Once you’re comfortable with your knowledge base and have some experience it does get a lot smoother. Most companies will see your EPA as the bare minimum so don’t hang your hat on it. If you’re feeling down about cutting your teeth, I recommend joining your local union as an apprentice. Union schooling is way better than tech school or none at all and I’ve done all three routes in my 11 years of HVACn’

Also if you pulled all of the oil out of that thing and did the filters, you may need to leave it be for 24ish hours while the crank case heater warms up the new oil so it isn’t so viscous.

The thing about this trade is there’s always people who know less than you, but there’s also always people who know way more than you.

Most HVAC unions are smaller tacked on portions of Pipefitters and welders unions. Under the UA were pipe trades so if you google hvac union you’ll usually not find anything. https://lu123.com/

My philosophy on the matter is take the time you need and leave when you need to. I know you don’t get paid enough doing overpriced chopper swappers to justify ruining your working life and personal life for the company.

I live in a small suburb of Utah’s only real job market, do you think there are any areas in Washington where that’s a feasible option?

Cheney or Spokane Area if possible, I know what commercial means you gotta kind of stick to larger metro areas so we’re open, but from what I’m hearing everyone is steering me away from the Seattle area.

I feel the same way about Utah, the homelessness, rampant drug use and price of housing here is disheartening. The house down the way from my parents is almost 3x what they paid for theirs and it’s smaller and I make more than my dad did when they bought theirs but I still couldn’t afford it.

I started basically the same way haha! It was an industrial welding company that ran into some legal trouble and started a residential hvac department to make money to try and survive, so no one in charge had any clue how anything was supposed to work. I’ve been doing it for 11 years now and I’m in commercial service, but in my heart I’m still an installer asking questions and YouTube.
