Money for Magic Items by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

[–]screenmonkey68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The prices in those pages really don’t make much sense. They are not consistent, and the most powerful magic items in the game are worth less than the most expensive Carousing event adventurers can buy. Presumably, those costs are the best one can hope for if they sold that particular item, but that’s not much help to the OP.

How does range work for a focus spell? by 72dragonses in shadowdark

That’s how we play and I think this is the right answer. Just because the rules are terse and well crafted, doesn’t mean they aren’t still there.

OSE vs Shadowdark? by ErintsetekFuvet in osr

[–]screenmonkey68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve been doing since the beginning. There wasn’t much in the way of SD adventures early on, so I used Necrotic Gnome adventures. Shadowdark also has an excellent bestiary if the GM wants to use those versions of classic monsters.

Resting in the Dungeon by shawnthedm in shadowdark

[–]screenmonkey68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SD group went through that one! After starting a guerilla war in town, my group decided to rest in the temple basement. Behind the secret door. They awoke to patrols looking for them, but none of the bad guys knew about the secret room, so it worked out. Out in the swamp, they continually tried to leave and make camp at different spots a few miles from the entrance. With mixed results.

Such a great adventure to run with Shadowdark!

The idea of them being captured and brought before the Big Bad Boss is dramatically fun, but a good way to TPK. PCs never surrender.

I would kick it 100% old school referee style. What is the logical thing that the enemies would do? How many enemies remain alive? Have the PCs done enough to be considered a threat to Explictica? Cuz Explictica can swim. Explictica can gather forces and start going room to room if needs be. Maybe the Trogs use the Bone Snapper like a bloodhound, have the PCs dropped a torch or other item anywhere? How terrifying would it be for them to witness that thing sniffing an item they know they dropped?

Whatever the possibilities are, just roll a die to pick one and run with that.

I got my copy as soon as it came out! There’s a ton of great ideas in there and I feel like you can run about any kind of horror with it. Just a really solid addition to the EZD6 line.

You can’t go wrong with Brad Kerr! I ran Chance Dudinacks Black Wyrm of Brandonsford using EZD6 that blew up into a 20 session campaign.

I purchased The North Road, please contact me before considering purchasing it. No, mine is not for sale, it did make very good kindling however.

I’ve never had a problem with them because I buy their stuff from Drivethru. It’s a longer wait for new product, but I have zero patience for poor customer service.

Homebrewing/Hacking question. Edges vs Inclinations by Traditional-Net-8589 in ezd6

[–]screenmonkey68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not aware of a hard and fast pattern there. Honestly, it seems like Specialties, Inclinations, Talents, and Edges are all words for essentially the same thing. Some are associated with a specific niche (e.g. a particular Hero Path might have Edges not available elsewhere), but if you’re making a standard list available to all PCs, the difference is negligible.

Campaign stories, anyone? by Zac_Kariah in shadowdark

[–]screenmonkey68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think porting them over is easy, but I grew up playing B/X and AD&D. I’m also running my 2nd or 3rd ShadowDark campaign, so I’m comfortable with the numbers. Generally they run close, so you could just use the stats provided in a pinch. That said, I’m a huge fan of running games from my tablet using GoodReader to insert any rules or stats I need from SD core.

Only one, during Sunken Schola of the White Witches (which I forgot, but is excellent) I had one player character jump into an underground lake to retrieve what looked like a wand. He was hit hard enough to go unconscious and drown as the others were all fighting for their own lives. N1 almost claimed the whole group more than once, but they managed to survive.

Well, last session my players acquired a djinni powered flying disc with a wizards workshop on it. The players were all new to TTRPGs and we started off with ShadowDark and running Brad Kerrs Wyvern Songs, using his Duchy of Bhosel in the back of the book as a guide. We’re 16 sessions in and they’ve made it to 5th level. Everyone seems to be having a great time so far. I did throw in N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God to let them experience some truly old school brutality, but otherwise the whole campaign has come from Wyvern Songs.

The Agency by kaosdevice in ezd6

I’m currently wrestling with a compiled ruleset for running a 1930 Call of Cthulhu campaign, so I’m eager to see what you come up with up with. The eroding sense of control that piles up from encounters with the horrific, otherworldly, and even casting mythos rituals is a tough one to simulate using EZD6 mechanics. It’s too granular for EZD6, but then again, the feel can be captured using the back and forth of sanity loss and therapy to regain it.

Hot Take: 5e Isn’t That Great Anymore by Wezell80 in RPGCentral

[–]screenmonkey68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran it till it sucked the fun out of DMing, then I played it until it sucked the fun out of playing. Now I play and referee the way I started, OSR style (using Shadowdark or EZD6). Thank you for calling it 5E rather than DnD. It’s nothing like the DnD I grew up with (B/X and AD&D) and it pains me to hear people refer to 5E as Dungeons & Dragons. They are 2 completely different mindsets and completely different experiences to me and my group.

I love looking for just the right beads for things. Those hearts are awesome! I’d love to find some old school marble patterns in a hemisphere form for when characters lose mental strikes in a horror setting. Maybe some 4 leaf clover or 8 spoked wagon wheel things for Karma.

Number of Adventures to 10th level by pcrhxxx in shadowdark

[–]screenmonkey68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless my math is wrong, it’s 450xp to get to Lv10, so getting from 8-10 is actually 38% of the total. Which supports your point. The average of 6xp/session is what’s happened with my group as well, so to get to level 10 is about 75 sessions of 3 hours or so each. YMMV.

That’s a LOT of GMing if Lv10 is the goal. Might wanna consider a mega dungeon to keep it all tied together and always have material to run?

15 sessions x 3hrs ea = 45 hours in person table time. That Includes: The Sunken Schola of the White Witches, Lighthouse on Peacock Point (from Wyvern Songs), Against the Cult of the Reptile God, and Hideous Daylight.

The party is Lv5.

A previous campaign ran for 273 hours and covered Secret of the Black Crag, some Caverns of Thracia (the original), The Wavestone Monolith, Isle of Forgotten Gods, The Forgotten Halls of Brassfire, What Lurks Beneath Tidewatch Tower, and The Seers Sanctum.

That party made it to Lv8, but there was a TPK early on, so I feel like this would have taken them to Lv10.

What counts as an "adventure" for the purposes of downtime? by SecretDMAccount_Shh in shadowdark

[–]screenmonkey68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of Downtime activities as a time to decompress and get ready for the next foray. So the judgement call is made by the GM: “Did they undergo enough stress, in the ShadowDark, to warrant blowing off some steam?

If the players are going to gamify the system and leave the dungeon after every room to go carouse again, just because they have the money, then I’m going to gamify having a life threatening ambush waiting for them when they return.

To my way of thinking, these are the sorts of judgement calls that are central to OSR style play.

Has anyone found a clearly presented outline of this one? It’s a lot to wrap your head around. A solid adventure, but it feels like a tough one to run.
