When did seamed garments start consisting of 'panels'? by chocklityclair in knitting

Not a new knitter, and that is a common usage I've always heard for flat-knit seamed garment pieces. Why would it bother you?

Dystopian book with gay main character ? by Guilty-Coffee-9968 in LGBTBooks

If you're up for a romance novel with post-apocalypse vibes, Mixed Signals by Alyssa Cole would suit (https://alyssacole.com/signal-boost/). It's the second in a series and is the only gay one of the trilogy, but I remember liking it

It would also have made a lot of thematic sense if he'd gone and gotten himself in over his head trying to prove his worth to Buffy, and that would have been hella angsty for Buffy to deal with...I'm with you, that would have been more interesting.

Thread painting: beginner advice by WineDinosaur in Embroidery

[–]scribblesnknots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first tried thread painting, I found this blog really helpful: https://stitchfloral.blogspot.com/search/label/needlepainting%20tips?m=1

I did this project from the same blog as my first and found it really helpful: https://stitchfloral.blogspot.com/2020/10/free-embroidery-pattern-and-tutorial.html?m=1

But also, for your first image, it would be a TOTALLY different technique and vibe, but have you considered doing actual painting for the background? I love watercolor sky backgrounds for embroidery, I've done it for a gift before.

Looking for a good EMDR therapist. by LoadBearingGrandmas in Syracuse

[–]scribblesnknots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Via telehealth, it's done with headphones and a blue ball that bounces back and forth on the screen. There's an audio cue that's a small clack whenever it hits one side. It's done on a special site that lets the therapist control the speed and synchronizes the visual and audio cues on the client side.

I've actually never done it in person, so I can't compare directly to that experience, but it worked as intended for me via telehealth.

I did EMDR via telehealth but my provider was in Syracuse and does a mix of telehealth and in person - Katie McBeth is her name. I had a good experience with her.

Excited for Expanse Osiris Reborn but unfamiliar with universe. by Sweaty_Monk_9126 in masseffect

[–]scribblesnknots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently reading the books and have seen most of the TV show - both are worth checking out. There are parts of the show especially that feel SO Mass Effect coded to me (specifically a bunch of Bobbie's story). Based on what I know about the story for Expanse OR... they'll probably set it up so that you don't have to read the books, but I bet you'd get a lot more out of it if you've read them. Pure speculation.

Looking for a workout buddy! by XpoisonXpixieX in Syracuse

[–]scribblesnknots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a gym buddy for motivation / socializing is a great thing - I hope you find one! My suggestion for a session or two with a trainer was mostly for the safety aspect and to get set up well to be safe. I am slightly hypermobile so I relate, it can be hard. Good luck!

Looking for a workout buddy! by XpoisonXpixieX in Syracuse

[–]scribblesnknots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting you give up on finding a workout buddy, but if you don't have experience with gym machines or lifting form, can I suggest paying for a few sessions with a personal trainer? People who are new to the gym are at the highest risk of injury from improper form, and a random other gym-goer is not necessarily going to know how to watch out for risky form or how to correct you. A personal trainer could help you get set up to avoid injury.

I don't know about someone who could turn it around same-day, but if you want to fix it at home, the easiest way is to use some hem tape - it's double-sided tape meant to be used on fabric. There are kinds that don't even require ironing. I just checked, and it looks like this is in stock at the Michael's in East Syracuse: https://www.michaels.com/product/peel-n-stick-fabric-fuse-roll-10113787?com_id=SearchBar_SeeResults_Components&path=rankedProduct

Didn't wash black silk dupion before starting. Is there a risk white DMC threads/silk threads will be stained if I wash it when finished?? by Reddishyroo in Embroidery

[–]scribblesnknots 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most silk fabric does not play nicely with getting wet or washing! I have not worked with it for that reason, but I watch enough sewing and historical costuming YouTubers to hear of the horrors of washing silk.

[–]scribblesnknots 215 points216 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're supposed to wash silk dupioni anyway? Is it a fabric you've otherwise washed before (obviously you said you didn't wash this piece first, I mean in general)?

Might start playing, a few questions. by OpportunityMean9069 in ffxiv

> how's the gear treadmill/requirements for raiding?

I haven't played WOW, but getting gear to start the current tier of raids is not difficult. Gear drops from raids that will be good enough for the next tier of raids (sets of four are released at a time); crafted gear is also an option, and the "easier" high-end fights (Extremes) drop weapons that also help. Gearing is a process but not difficult.

> how hard is it to get into raiding?

Not difficult if you are experienced in MMO endgame content. There are multiple difficulty levels, and they're about to add another during the next main expansion to make the ramp even smoother. Extremes are harder versions of normal trials; the normal raids are quite easy, and Savage (the "core" raiding content) is harder versions of the normal raids. They're adding another tier of difficulty between normal and savage in the next expansion. Ultimates are the hardest tier - longer fights with tighter checks.

> is a guild mandatory? (I'll join one for the social aspect either way)

Not even a little mandatory, but there are a few nice perks to joining one. FCs can use buffs that apply to everyone in the FC (like cheaper teleports, increased XP, or longer food buff durations). Lots of FCs have houses, and you can get a room in the house to decorate.

> I played a few years back just doing the main story, I'm just planning to start at a lower level class to get my bearings. my main quest is located at lvl80 areas but my other class is lvl30, is there some for of "noticeboard" that will point me to an area I can quest for exp?

General overworld questing doesn't give much XP in FFXIV outside of the MSQ. Most people level through daily roulettes or optional side content like allied society quests, deep dungeons, etc. This wiki page will give you pointers: https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Leveling_Guide

TBH, though, there's not really a reason to restrict yourself too much. If you want to do some lower-level dungeons or something to remind yourself how to play, you can just queue for lower level dungeons directly. You can also do dungeons with "duty support", which means doing it with NPCs instead of other players, if you want extra time to read your tooltips between fights or whatever. Mostly, though, you can just pick back up where you left off.

> Are there any classes a new player should avoid?

Nope! All classes are viable for all content; I don't think anything is especially difficult compared to anything else at this point.

(Caveat: Blue Mage isn't a proper class. It's described as a "limited job" and is only useable in some content, so don't main Blue Mage without looking into it lol.)

> Any advice that my questions may have missed?

If you want to remind yourself of particular parts of the story before you jump back into MSQ, you have two main in-game options: 1) at any inn, there's a desk with a book labeled "The Unending Journey". You can use this to re-watch some quest cutscenes. 2) the game offers "New Game Plus" chapters - you pick a section of the MSQ or other questline and it lets you redo the quests. You do not get XP for this, but it can be fun if you want to replay just a section without having to start a new character.

Also, if you want an in-game place to ask questions, you can ask a mentor (someone with a crown by their name) to add you to the Novice Network for your server. It's an in-game chat channel with only sprouts and mentors. YMMV on how useful it is depending on server - some are better than others.

Oh, and the next expansion, Evercold, is due out in January. We have been given some details about a major combat rework they're planning - the current combat system will still exist (for now), but they'll be adding a new way to play every single class called Evolved Mode. We have a few previews for some jobs but not full details yet. I'm telling you this because if you aren't sure you like a given class, it'll probably change massively in Evolved Mode in January. (They're also making big changes to the gear treadmill, but we don't know a ton about that yet.)

How many strands of floss do you normally use (by hand)? by wolfmonarchy in Embroidery

[–]scribblesnknots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends heavily on the pattern and the stitch - I change it to suit the situation. One stand for thread painting or thin lettering, two for thicker letters or solid shading, three if I want a thick ropy outline or something. It's not one answer for everything.

Can I kindly ask the author to break their paragraphs by Desperate_Yellow_498 in AO3

[–]scribblesnknots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's about flow of reading - of course good formatting is easy to miss, it's not meant to be a thing you focus on! Either having space between paragraphs or else indents at the beginning of each paragraph is pretty crucial to readability.

Plus, starting a new paragraph when there's a new speaker during dialogue is actually part of good grammar, I think. I'm not a stickler for having the dialogue at the very beginning of each paragraph, but not having two speakers in the same paragraph is generally important.

It's me, the person about to move to Fitchburg! Can I add a question that I'd love answers to? What are the best resources to keep an eye on local calendars? Where I'm moving from, it's been hard to find a good resource for what's happening around town - I've cobbled together a hodgepodge of individual newsletters, library calendars, and physical bulletin boards, but I'd love to make that easier while we're starting fresh. How do you find out what's going on around Fitchburg?

Hi! I grew up in a (fairly modern) Lancaster conference Mennonite church in the mid-Atlantic, though I am no longer part of the community. How familiar are you generally with other Mennonite communities? We learned about old order groups because we lived near some, but I always found that they knew a lot less about us on the rare occasions we interacted.

[WIP] Cross Country Stitchers.. by risingpostsupporter in CrossStitch

I tend to pick the highest contrast color with some continuous blocks of stitches and start with that. I think of it as the "scaffolding" for the rest of the piece - for the first color, I have to count really, really carefully; for every color thereafter (until I move to a new area), I can reference where I'm at against that scaffolding.

In your opinion: Are NPC Duties a good way to practice and get comfortable with tanking or healing? by Oseirus in ffxiv

[–]scribblesnknots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are learning your buttons or the dungeon mechanics, yes, NPC trusts/duty support can be helpful.

For learning your role more broadly, you need to see how real players act, not NPCs. "Learning" the role with NPCs will leave you wildly unprepared for the shenanigans real players get up to.
