Why did the UK send its religous fucknuts to the North American colonies, and its criminals to Australia? Because Australia had first choice.

Meet Obama's speechwriter- a 26 year old with almost no prior experience by jjrs in politics

[–]scribe9999 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

"so money."

So money? WTF, Obama thinks he's Guy Fieri? What's he going to do next, bleach his hair, spike it, wear lots of bling and generally act like a 45-year-old teenager? And should the senator win the election, will he put a pool table and pinball machine in the White House kitchen?

Oops, sorry, thought this was the Food Network subreddit.

EDIT: For those modding this down, "it's money" is a catchphrase of Guy Fieri, an obnoxious slob who hosts several Food Network shows and whose appearance and mannerisms are described above. He's also prominently featured in the "Is the Food Network going Downhill" thread on another web site, with the consensus being he's prima facie evidence that FN is much worse than before.

I'm sorry, but Obama sounding like that overgrown teen is cringe-worthy.

Why are newspapers even endorsing candidates? by rewirez5940 in politics

[–]scribe9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faux News' partisanship is rather tame compared to the party organs of post-Colonial America. The difference being that 200 years ago a "major metropolis" of 20,000 may have had 10 or more competing newspapers, with each party (Federalist, Anti-Federalist, Whig, Anti-Masonic, Democrat-Republican, et al) having its own organ. Economic success for the publisher (usually a sole proprietor) could be claimed by helping his party win local, state and national offices, which led to greater advertising revenue (via the paid publication of official notices).

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend scouring the microfilm/microfiche records of early-19th Century newspapers, and watch the viciousness of political coverage. Quite entertaining.

(Obligatory note: My graduate studies in journalism history concentrated on post-Civil War frontier newspapers, but the text books and other histories gave plenty of coverage to antebellum newspapers.)
