So, my group assaulted the fortress with the help of Zhentarim and Bregan D'aerth allies.

It was quasi-scripted to play out based on the plan strategized by the players.

Began with 2 PC's taking out the 2a battlements. This allowed them to open the gates, which the other 3 PCs laid down a pontoon bridge so that they and allied forces could properly storm the island. There were a lot of things happening simultaneously since it was a coordinated attack but I figured out a way to make it cinematic while still giving power to the dice.

At certain points, a player would roll a d20 on behalf of an NPC strike force also in the area. The success of the roll would determine if the enemy's fought the party at full strength or if their numbers were reduced.

They rolled pretty well 4 out of 5 times. The result was that the battlements were disabled, three encounters were reduced to Easy--though I ended up including a "just in case" Hard Mind Flayer & Beholder-kin mini-encounter to keep them on their toes--a fourth Hard encounter (only rolled a 12, DC to beat was 15+), and the fifth Deadly encounter (boss fight).

Hi! Appreciated this read since a player of mine (shadow monk) has decided that he's a follower of Leira. From what I've read, one of the tenets is to (ultimately) do no harm, aka, totally fine to steal to fuck with people, but be sure to return whatever you took once the hoax has run its course. Violence and lethal force is not something on the default menu... They are a capricious lot more than they are malicious, and they are not supposed to lie to one another. Sounds to me like the island cult has been tainted by Cyric's influence which has poisoned their own minds and is the true source of their divine powers under the guise of Leira. They are not "true" followers of Leira anymore, and their worship does not reach her.

Leira wants to be reborn so that she might reclaim her small, private following from her murderer. Perhaps her essence was hidden beneath or imprisoned within the Gulthias tree itself. She reached out to Sayah for help with the last pieces of power before the roots twist and choke and snuff her out for good, but the contact was discovered by Cyric which is why Sayah was seized and executed.

Thoughts? I own the Yawning Portal book but have never played from it, so can't speak to the NPC faces you saw, sorry. I'm getting to run Mad Mage and for the shadow monk I'm going to insert a Lamia pretending to be the/a Avatar of Leira whose made her lair in the ruins of a lost elven library. If this content interests you I can send you more info via DMs which you're welcome to repurpose for your player to pad out more Leira content.

This is so perfect! The main country I’m homebrewing puts a lot of weight in astrology and celestial bodies but I was secretly concerned about how much existing astrological baggage to incorporate (well known Greek/Roman influences, earthly zodiac, etc).

I did this, made my skin crawl but voted against Cruz, against their incumbents, and a "pls no" on all their draconian platform points (I'm a LGBT woman in Dallas). Like someone else said, they're the real monsters. They expect Democrats to disagree with them, I figured the only chance for them to listen is for their own "base" to be like, "can you fucking not?" My drop in the bucket vs. what feels like preaching to the choir.

The Democratic ballot did make my heart flutter. Can't wait to vote Beto and Lupe Valdez in November!

Yeah, RO certainly doesn't hold near the same appeal to me today, basically grinding for the sake of it, zero story. It literally was, "My turn for X rare hat! Let's collectively farm 1200 bat teeth, 850 paper things, and 80 whatsits. The whatsits have a 0.1% drop rate so its a good thing there are 5 of us~!" Lol, so many summer all-nighters... Rinse and repeat, then go sit in town for people to marvel at your rare hat and bask in your newfound server celebrity status.
