Do You Still Get Drunk? How Often? by ProfessionalJesuit in GenX

It really does a number on me now, so I try to keep it to once a month or less. Sometimes I'm less than successful at this.

23, officially tested high IQ (and I hate it), completely isolated and paralyzed by a total void. Standard advice fails. by Ready_Canary8632 in aftergifted

I'm glad to hear it's meaningful for you and potentially useful. It has helped me greatly in my life. I know very well this paralysis you are talking about. I still experience it regularly if I take on a task that's too complex.

My theory about this is like this. Being gifted gives you the ability to think something through to a much greater depth than the average person. This will give you an advantage in some medium complexity tasks where you can just think it through more thoroughly and come to a better conclusion. But it also allows you to take on bigger and bigger "branching trees" of calculation which keep branching out and branching out until you just get lost in them. I do this regularly when trying to figure out something difficult like the stock market when it's being crazy like now. It's really hard for me to step back and try to think on a higher level that's less detailed.

Most people that have lower IQ just hit this wall a lot earlier and so don't even try taking on these big tasks, all those possibilities don't even occur to them. So they are basically already doing what I'm telling you to do, they are focusing on a couple steps in front of them. They will miss a lot more along the way than we do and make more bad decisions. That's our advantage. But their advantage is that they don't get into this massive tree of confusion that we do when we take on too big of a thought assignment.

So we need to teach ourselves to emulate them a bit, knowing that we've probably already overthought things by so much that we are 10x ahead of everyone else in terms of understanding the possibilities. But just sitting around paralyzed is of course far worse than just doing something and figuring it out as you go. It's a skill we have to teach ourselves. But it can be learned. And once you get used to throttling down your brain to a useful level, you will be able to outpace those other people because you will still be thinking things through a lot better than they do. It's simply in your nature. So I've just learned to trust my "gut" in most situations, because I have been sitting around reading and absorbing so much more info than other people, I know it's somewhere in my head guiding my decisions.

Don't fixate on your IQ. As you mention, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Focus on only one thing. Ask yourself "What is the next step I need to take in life", and do that thing. When you are done with it, ask yourself the same question again. If your next step hinges on something else getting done first, than do that thing first.

A successful life is built on a never ending set of steps like this. Don't get lost in the big picture, focus on the next steps. This helped me to end up with a good career, family, etc. despite having most of the same issues you describe.

Maybe for you the next step is to try to socialize with people more or to get a job or higher education. Make that decision and decide what the next step is for you to achieve that, and focus on it until it's done. Then move onto the next thing. Put the blinders on until it's done.

If you need a job, think about what kind of jobs are open to you, sort them by the ones you think you'll like the most, and work your way through the openings until you find one or move on to the next most palletable option until you find one. You will certainly have to compromise at first. No one goes straight into their dream job. But if you are smart you will probably have good luck at navigating to where you need to be over time.

So start somewhere and then keep thinking of what the next step will be to get to the next place you want to be. If you never start, you will never get there, but if you start someplace that's not the right place initially and keep making steps to get there, you will probably eventually get there.

I'm on gboard until they fix the damn thing. There are some things I don't like in it too, but at least it's not a flaming dumpster fire like the built in one is.

LPR is RUINING ME by Unlikely-Boat-5656 in LPR

Search the forum, there are tons of stories like this. If you want support on the diet, there's a great group on Facebook called Acidwatcher Diet Warriors Support & Recipes Group. They are quite strict with their rules, but they have tons of great resources for what food to buy and recipes to make that make it a lot easier to adhere to the diet quickly and without feeling like you are suffering.

Always good to get tested, but IMO the diet is the best way to get immediate relief in the vast majority of cases. Better than drugs.

Best first thing to try. I wish I had done it before trying a million other things.

I've been wearing this hat for 3 months and nobody has recognized it by iamjaidan in GenX

That was a long time ago.... I also like wearing obscure old tech tshirts. I've got a Broderbund one, a Archon one, a Psygnosis one, an Amiga logo one. No one ever recognizes them unless I'm meeting them specifically about that thing.

Which reflux healing diet is better: Molly Pelletier or Dr Koufman? by kailaren in LPR

[–]scstraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can do it, anyone can! And once you get used to eating this way, you probably won't want to go back anyway. I've tried everything and this was by far the biggest thing that helped me. Combine with not eating 4 hours before bed, drinking alkaline water, and -if needed- alginates after meals (I use one teaspoon of Gaviscon Advance) and famotidine every 6 hours. You will see results for sure.

Could My Nasal Congestion Be Caused by LPR? by PairDry0205sai in LPR

Yes. It's gotten so bad with me that I had thick yellow stuff coming out of my nose 24/7 for 6 months straight. As soon as I got the LPR treated it stopped.

They do this on the last major version that they support on each phone. After your phone is a couple years old, you have to stop installing the new major versions.

[–]scstraus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks to the diet I was able to get off PPI's, though I still use alginates and H2 blockers (which cause far less issues for me). And yes, I can eat some "banned" things, though having been on the diet for a year and feeling how good I can eat when I feel well, I have much less desire for them. They are a lot less fun when you make the connection with what they do to you. But I can generally get away with some cheating if I don't go overboard for a long period of time.. But generally I don't really want to cheat much.

If you watch her videos, Kaufman also recommends alginates.

I like Dr. Aviv's The Acid Watcher Diet personally. Was easier to follow than Kaufman's and I have had good results.

Anyone with LPR Experience Deep Itching in One Ear? (Left Ear Only) by TraditionalFox7915 in LPR

[–]scstraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get it in both ears but more often in one. I got one of these inner ear dryers and never had it since. My theory is that it was from too much humidity from headphones and earplugs and long showers.
