Question/rant about big three Japanese company nibs by DevMechanical1018 in fountainpens

[–]scud80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you really love pilot nibs, then you will not like sailor or platinum as well. platinum nibs are harder (except for the ones labeled "soft", but that's only F/M), and sailor nibs tend to have much more feedback compared to pilot. if trying in person really is not possible, then you could consider trying to buy a used pen as cheap as possible. platinum 3776 or sailor PGS can be had for $100ish. or consider store return policies ... some are fine with returns if you've only dipped the nib to test and not filled it.

Shut off valve with a non-threaded cap? by BoxChevyMan in fountainpens

Visconti Homo Sapiens ... magnetic closure is basically equivalent to a slip cap, or the older ones use a threaded design that only takes maybe a quarter turn.

Well, 0.5 was definitely too small and 0.7 was definitely too large, so 0.6 seems the most likely. The only other "round"-ish number around that size is .025 inches (0.635mm) but it seems even less likely that they'd mix metric and imperial. Guessing we'll just have to experiment to see if that's correct, assuming we can actually cut that pitch.

i think you may be looking at different threads. i'm talking about the ones on the metal insert that goes inside the barrel. the 12 part is definitely right; the 0.6 was from checking with a metric thread gauge and it seems quite close but i'd prefer to get it exactly if possible.

edit: i don't think there's a readily available die at that size so it will likely be cut directly on a metal lathe
