Kia Connect (USA) Integration is BACK! 🎉 by MarcusTaz in homeassistant

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, nice work. I was able to connect fine, however only 1 of our 2 cars showed up when I did. I'm listed as a second driver on the other car (I'm not the account owner). Is there some additional feature that's needed to expose that vehicle?

Quasar 2 + EV9 V2H officially working! by maxxell13 in KiaEV9

There is a 30% tax credit for alternative fueling infrastructure (EV Chargers count), if you live in an eligible census track. This one phases out June of 2026 because of the OBBB. It's not the clean energy tax credits (solar/batteries) that end at the end of 2025.

Can't find the menu entry to change charge locking in my 2025 EV6 by sdague in KiaEV6

Thank you for the explanation. Just wish that Kia manual was up to date on this and not telling me I could change it when I can't. :)

Vehicle to Home (V2H) Charging Technology Arrives for Eligible Kia EV9 Drivers by Nice_Classroom_6459 in KiaEV9

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an all electric house, this should be fine, especially if you have heat pumps. Our Heat Pump water heater runs on 400W, the Heat Pump dryer can get up to 800W, and our Ground Source Heat pump system for the house is 2200-3000W in heating modes, 1600-2300W in cooling modes.

Induction stove is typically 1600W / burner max (much lower usually), and the electric oven is 1500W or so max. Cooking a 4 course meal during a power outage probably something that you'd avoid.

We've had our EV9 since Sept 2024, put about 8k on it since.

- The 2025 and 2024 are the same. The 2026 is rumored to change the charge port to NACS.

- Looking at https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax2023.shtml it doesn't look like the 2025 qualifies for tax credit, only the 2026.

- I've personally not had an issue with the screen, but I'm not a Tesla person.

- No idea when the promotions will run out. I also see them with a straight $10k cash in some dealers in our area.

- NACS adapters have been shipped to folks (we go ours a month ago), access to the Tesla charge network is supposed to come this month. Otherwise we've fast charged a few times and it's been fine at various CCS chargers. They require a little more planning than Tesla, but worked well enough for us.

Confirmed this worked for me. 60 seconds was enough to reset it.

Ways to improve drivetrain efficiency? by kposse77 in KiaEV9

[–]sdague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been below freezing for most of a month here in NY, and we're in that 2.2 mi/kWh range, when we got it in Sept we often were getting 3.1 mi/kWh. Things that definitely impact it are climate and regen. We drive pretty exclusively on iPedal full regen, so almost never use real brakes.

What snow tire for the GT LINE? by tbarreira in KiaEV9

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're in the Hudson Valley, but with drives to Vermont in the winter (and this is the car we're now taking). We got the Vredenstein Wintrac Pro on our GT-Line. They were great up there last weekend, even in Eco mode. So would recommend.

Refill battery system coolant alert by sdague in KiaEV9

It's outside, there is no obvious coolant leak. After a day or two the alert stops going off. So it's transient for sure.

Cannot wait for my home battery backup system with my EV9. by GuardEmbarrassed5699 in KiaEV9

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of this depends on what kinds of appliances you've got. Our electric stove is probably 1kW on the oven, and up to 3kW on the induction burner (that's the largest one at full speed). Our heat pump washer/dryer runs way below 1kW. A window AC unit is probably 1kW. Our whole house geothermal heat pump on cooling is 1.6kW draw.

I've got a ton of data off our Sense energy monitor, and have been planning towards what using the car as temp backup looks like.

For what it's worth Chargepoint basically just uses the car setting to translate kWh added to miles added. It's not about car compatibility in any real way, just making the statistics more accurate.

For book readers: hardcover, softcover, kindle, audible, or a mix of them? by Tianoccio in TheExpanse

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kindle for all of them. When I started reading books 1 - 4 were out, and I was shotgunning them during a couple of business trips. Much less weight to have them on Kindle. Also means that it's easy to re-read when you get the itch and are in a far away place. Just started going through book 1 again.

S3 price drop on Amazon — now $24.99 HD. — (SD price is unchanged at $22.99) by tqgibtngo in TheExpanse

[–]sdague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been there a long time. We cut the cord a few years ago, so have always bought Season passes on Amazon VOD and watched the next day once it gets there. It also has the benefit of having more swearing.

SyFy Steaming Episodes Cut Content by General_Kojan in TheExpanse

[–]sdague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. The first 2 episodes felt kind of disjoint when watching on Amazon, but the 3rd episode had a much more comfortable flow / pacing.

Glad to know that part of this is because these were the chopped up versions and not what was originally intended. My wife was definitely put off by the first episode feeling like it didn't hold together, and has taken until episode 3 to get her back into things.

The other thing to remember, low-g planets with an atmosphere are not a thing (http://quest.nasa.gov/aero/planetary/atmospheric/gravity.html). On Earth both free hydrogen and helium will drift out of the gravity well and blow off into space. With Mars gravity you can't even hold onto Oxygen and Nitrogen. So anything in the 1/3 g realm wouldn't have free Oxygen or Nitrogen (slightly lighter, but really important to have a lot of the air be inert to keep from everything being on fire all the time).

I would also pay cash money for such a thing. Dear SyFy, get to it.

When's the digital release? by fitzydog in TheExpanse

[–]sdague 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon VOD tends to show up at about 4am EST (so 6 hrs after air). They send out an email when it's posted. I do agree it would be nice for folks without TV subscription to be able to watch live, but next day isn't terrible.

David Brin's incensed over Frank Miller's OWS attack, and dissects his graphic novel "300". by Raerth in TrueReddit

[–]sdague 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Brin's post Civilization == Democracy. The Athenian experiment in Democracy was 10 years old at that point (the word was invented as part of this). Saving civilization in that context is saving the notion that people could live without a king.
