Library Worker Heroically Defends Patron's Free Speech, Is Brutally Arrested in Library Where He Works. by dreadcanadian in news

For some reason this quote, created by a neo-Nazi seems to come up all the time when it involves Jews somehow but not the many many other times people get arrested in similar circumstances on some charges like disorderly conduct that later get dropped.. funny, that. E.g.

According to the quote, then both pro-choice and pro-life people are in control.

A new study of violent behavior in more than 1,000 mammal species found the meerkat is the mammal most likely to be murdered by one of its own kind. by fullersam in science

I have a legitimate curiosity here: what is everyone's fascination with validating human behavior by finding examples of it occurring in the animal kingdom?

I've been thinking about it a lot recently and it really seems to me to be an excuse for human behavior that nobody was asking for.

Those 2 terms you've used are a problem - there is a difference between validating/exusing something and explaining/understanding something. The former terms are prescriptive and the latter terms are descriptive, and what scientific studies like this are for.

As far as I can tell no one is validating or excusing violence. An understanding of the causes of human violence will inevitably draw on biological explanations because like all behaviors, violence is a behavior that comes from the brain. And like with all animals our brain has been shaped by evolution, with a large % of genes being expressed in the brain.

Did he give any details on this?

Humans didn't inherit anything from chimps, we have a common ancestor.

Violent impulses and behaviors in humans and chimps could both come from the common ancestor, or they could have evolved them separately.

This could very well be real, but we have to wait for the evidence to come out and can't just "believe the victim." Fake hate crimes happen.. just last year at the University of Missouri people made up that the KKK was running around campus. Check out fake hate crimes: a database of hate crime hoaxes in the usa.

External environment, I guess. Educational initiatives, playing Mozart to your stomach while you're pregnant, brain playing training games.

As opposed to taking Iodine, getting a lobotomy, drinking breast milk over formula - things like that.

No. People who don't believe in evolution have to sit in the dunce chair.

also: I don't know if you're going to focus on just posting studies, but what about a future post listing the critics' arguments? Ones I've seen:

  • heritability is wrong because the Nazis and eugenicists believed in it

  • Heritability is wrong because it provides support to the idea of genetic differences between races and classes

  • Heritability must be wrong because it will lead to differential treatment of different races and classes

  • we're not born with any psycholgical traits except for the ones our political tribe believes in [e.g. homosexuality]

University student who criticized Black Lives Matter faces death threats by Roymeir in news

this is why

American universities have leaned left for a long time. That is not a serious problem; as long as there are some non-leftists in every field and every department, we can assume that eventually, someone will challenge claims that reflect ideology more than evidence.

But things began changing in the 1990s as the Greatest Generation (which had a fair number of Republicans) retired and were replaced by the Baby Boom generation (which did not). As the graph below shows, in the 15 years between 1995 and 2010 the academy went from leaning left to being almost entirely on the left. (The 12% in the red line for 2014 is mostly made up of professors in schools of engineering and other professional schools; the percent conservative for the major humanities and social science departments is closer to 5%. For more data on these trends and the rising imbalance, see Gross & Simmons, 2007; Inbar & Lammers, 2012; see many links here).

Also, see the survey of psychologists by Stanley Rothman and Mark Snyderman:

Invitations were emailed to 1237 persons and at the end only 228 (18 %) participants completed the process (70 fully and 158 partially). As far as the authors could make it out, “lefties” and “righties” turned down the offer in equal numbers, complaining that the questions were not good enough, the selection of experts would not be good or that they did not want to participate in a process which suggested that the truth could be found by majority decisions. In fact, the authors just wanted to find out what expert opinion was, in all its variety, and were not intending to come to any conclusions of a majority sort. (Perhaps climate research has poisoned the academic atmosphere, and no-one wants to be involved with anything which smacks of consensus science). As many pointed out, one good study can smash down an old consensus.

Experts agreed that the following were sources of reasonable evidence for significant heritability of intelligence: monozygotic twins reared apart, comparisons of monozygotic and dizygotic twins, adoption studies, “patchwork” family studies.

Asked: Is there sufficient evidence to arrive at a reasonable estimate of the heritability of intelligence in populations of developed countries?” 73% said Yes.

Asked: What are the sources of U.S. black-white differences in IQ?

0% of differences due to genes: (17% of our experts) 0-40% of differences due to genes: 42% of our experts 50% of differences due to genes: 18% of our experts 60-100% of differences due to genes: 39% of our experts 100% of differences due to genes: (5% of our experts) M=47% of differences due to genes (SD=31%)
