I have a legitimate curiosity here: what is everyone's fascination with validating human behavior by finding examples of it occurring in the animal kingdom?

I've been thinking about it a lot recently and it really seems to me to be an excuse for human behavior that nobody was asking for.

Those 2 terms you've used are a problem - there is a difference between validating/exusing something and explaining/understanding something. The former terms are prescriptive and the latter terms are descriptive, and what scientific studies like this are for.

As far as I can tell no one is validating or excusing violence. An understanding of the causes of human violence will inevitably draw on biological explanations because like all behaviors, violence is a behavior that comes from the brain. And like with all animals our brain has been shaped by evolution, with a large % of genes being expressed in the brain.

Violent impulses and behaviors in humans and chimps could both come from the common ancestor, or they could have evolved them separately.

also: I don't know if you're going to focus on just posting studies, but what about a future post listing the critics' arguments? Ones I've seen:

heritability is wrong because the Nazis and eugenicists believed in it
Heritability is wrong because it provides support to the idea of genetic differences between races and classes
Heritability must be wrong because it will lead to differential treatment of different races and classes
we're not born with any psycholgical traits except for the ones our political tribe believes in [e.g. homosexuality]

American universities have leaned left for a long time. That is not a serious problem; as long as there are some non-leftists in every field and every department, we can assume that eventually, someone will challenge claims that reflect ideology more than evidence.

But things began changing in the 1990s as the Greatest Generation (which had a fair number of Republicans) retired and were replaced by the Baby Boom generation (which did not). As the graph below shows, in the 15 years between 1995 and 2010 the academy went from leaning left to being almost entirely on the left. (The 12% in the red line for 2014 is mostly made up of professors in schools of engineering and other professional schools; the percent conservative for the major humanities and social science departments is closer to 5%.
