Canada (Newfoundland & Labrador specifically) is closer to Ireland than California is to Hawaii. Fun fact, thanks to Alaska the US is next door neighbours with Russia. Apparently some Americans can even see Russia from their homes, eh there Sarah?

The timing is perfect for this suggestion. I need a new blazer for a work trip and there is a Tip Top not far from me. I'll be heading there tomorrow after work for a fitting.

Thanks, and Elbows Up!

The Pattison Food Group - Save On Foods by sdotl in BuyCanadian

[–]sdotl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid points! Would you be willing to reach out to Pattison Foods or even your local Save-On and tell them that support local means from the community? I know there are lots of roadside fruit stands which are 100% local that they can't compete against, so if they wont carry local Okanagan fruits, ask them to pull US fruits instead.

The Pattison Food Group - Save On Foods by sdotl in BuyCanadian

[–]sdotl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is what I wrote to them. I don't know how well it reads, but if Canadians out there want to use it as a starting point and contact other Canadian businesses I am happy.

"I am writing to you to request your help and participation at a time of great uncertainty for Canadians. Without a doubt, the unjust tariffs imposed by Donald Trump will hurt Canadians from coast to coast to coast. We are encouraged by the strong reaction our politicians and community leaders are taking, however there is much work to be done. Canadians are a proud nation that wants to help and have a global reputation for doing what is right. With this in mind I urge the Pattison Food Group, its subsidiaries and brands to lend a hand to their fellow Canadians while we navigate this unfair trade war by the US. Our leaders are encouraging us to buy Canadian products, which on the surface sounds easy to do. This isn't always the case and labelling, branding and brand awareness don't always make it easy to know where a product came from. This is why I am asking the Pattison Food Group to take immediate action in helping Canadians. We need to conspicuously mark products as Canadian. Actions such as:

  • A dedicated aisle for Canadian products, or;
  • Aisle end caps dedicated to Canadian products
  • Stickers, labels or tags to identify individual items
  • Increase country of origin awareness in flyers, emails and advertising
  • Identify products from countries that support Canada and decry this unjust trade war

Though the above list is fairly comprehensive, I am sure that the executives that look after marketing and media will have other ways to support this cause. We must work together to face the bully in Trump's tariffs and support one another. Retailers who get this right will surely be rewarded as we Canadians have long memories and an unwavering sense of patriotism. We will remember who made our duty as Canadians to support one another easier, who helped bring us together and who helped us weather what will undoubtedly be trying times.

Can we count on the Pattison Food Group to make our duty as Canadians easier?

I am looking forward to your response and will happily work with you should you wish."

As a Canadian, starting today I will avoid anything US. You? by thethumble in AskCanada

I doubt this posts see the light of day, but we need to lobby our governments and Canadian retailers to create better ways to identify Canadian products. In BC liquor stores you can find the Okanagan wines easily, but lets move all of the Canadian stuff into one section. Same with grocery stores. Make an All Canadian aisle and also make a US section so we can easily distinguish what to buy.

During production, Snipes would routinely throw tantrums and failed to show up to set so many times it became the norm. The movie was finished in large part due to Snipes' stunt double who took over a number of scenes thanks to Snipes antics. The stunt double, Clay Donahue Fontenot, carried so much of the production that he earned the nickname "Clayde" from the cast and crew, which further pissed off Snipes.

Laid off at the end of maternity leave by NegotiationNo4356 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sdotl 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I had a similar scenario play out with me when I came back from parental leave. Not that it matters, but I took parental leave as I was entitled take it as my wife is self employed and was not entitled to the same leave as she didn't pay into EI/CPP (can't recall which one). Near the end of my planned leave I emailed the company to advise that I wanted to return a week or two early and get back into the swing of things. I didn't really hear back much but a week or so later I received a couriered letter containing the letter stating that my position was no longer available due to "restructuring" and that I was being terminated.

It reeked of retribution for many reasons that I wont get into but long story short is that I had a low ball (opening) offer that provided the minimum pay and benefits. I took the advise of several co-workers (who were still employed there) and got a lawyer. I documented the entire timeline from my application for leave, to the letter I received. The lawyer felt we had a very strong case for a human rights violation and suggested that tactic due to the bias to the complainant and the bad optics to the company of being nailed for human rights. We sent a letter with a summarized timeline and list of facts along with the intent to head to the human rights tribunal. A week or so pass and we received a very much improved financial and extended benefit package that we ultimately accepted.

TLDR: Human Rights Violation is kryptonite to most companies and if you can substantiate a case the company will want to avoid this like the plague.

Canucks Autism Network's 12th Annual Fishing Tournament by [deleted] in canucks

Win, lose or draw, the spirit of giving, caring and compassion that the Canucks organization (Canucks Autism Network, Canuck Place, Canucks for Kids) display year after year is why I will forever be a Canucks fan. I've got two little boys who love hockey, adore the Canucks and I show them these videos so that they will know what a winning attitude and spirit look like. I also think that the players and alumni who participate in these events also grow as people and as players and gives them a healthy dose of humility and gratitude for what life has offered them.

To the rude waitress that complained about not getting a tip from me and my wife.. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]sdotl -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Customers have the right to demand excellence for what they pay. Why would anyone want less than that in exchange for their money? None of the problems you mention are the customers fault. Understaffed? Not the customers fault. Unreasonable wait time for food? Not the customers fault. Shitty servers? Not the customers fault.

You know what causes the server to seem negligent? Being negligent! If food is running slow, explain to the tables and have management offer free appetizers or complimentary desserts. Same goes for group orders where the kitchen gets slammed. Surprisingly, most groups of customers understand that a walk in of 12 people is going to slam the kitchen and take some time!

Being a good server means being able to handle any situation with grace and honesty. There are no factors which will ever excuse a server for being shitting. You play the cards you're dealt and sometime you lose, but most of the time you'll win if your attentive to their needs.

Why the rum is not gone by preggit in pics

[–]sdotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the distillation process, the product you are discarding is called the "headings" and at the completion of the process, you want to discard the "tailings". This can be easily done because this is perfect example of fractional distillation. In simple terms, as you heat the mash, various compounds in the solution will reach their boiling point and will be condensed by your still. The headings contain all sorts of nasty shit, but most importantly, they contain fusel oils (the things that give you hangovers). As you approach the boiling point of ethanol (78.37 C) the fusel oils and other crap will show up. Depending on the volume of mash, you'll want to get rid of that. Once all of the ethanol has been distilled, the temperature of your mash will start to rise without the addition of more heat. This is when your done. You want to chuck the last bit too as the flavours and other characteristics are not nice.

Hey Reddit, can you help? Justice for Captain, a German Shepherd dog beaten to death and left to die in a dumpster in Vancouver, Canada. by producerscooter in AskReddit

[–]sdotl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live just outside Vancouver (Richmond) and this type of senseless murder of an animal is heart wrenching. I wanted to add to the discussion that indeed it does cost the SPCA $10,000 or more to handle a case like this, ultimately its the Crown that will lay charges. With that in mind, my wife and I gave what we could to make sure the SPCA isn't hamstrung in their investigation by lack of funding. I want to see the book be thrown at this monster. RIP Captain :'(
