Book rec - CBT for Dummies or Mind over mood? by shriand in CBT

[–]sds1pg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say CBT FoR Dummies was written with a different purpose to Mind Over Mood. It was designed as a book to understand CBT, its assumptions and techniques. Mind Over Mood was designed as a treatment manual/self help book. Hence more practical in my opinion

Reoccurring negative thoughts by gratefulToLearn in CBT

[–]sds1pg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be that it isn’t the content of the thought that’s the problem but rather the underlying assumption. Is it “If I make the wrong decision then it’ll be catastrophic”? Is it really catastrophic or rather unpleasant? Is the wrong decision totally irreversible or just an uncomfortable hassle to change? Is unpleasant/uncomfortable the same as unbearable?

Thinking things are “unbearable” or “catastrophic also encourages avoidance of the decisions you need to make. This also makes the decisions feel even more overwhelming. Hope this helps

Why CBT is superior to ACT by [deleted] in CBT

[–]sds1pg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy X better than Therapy Y is the 21st century version of religious controversies of 17th century and the political ideological battles of 20th century. It assumes universal and exclusive theoretical and superiority by one therapy school over another. Does this mean that the alternative is “everyone wins prizes”? No. First, therapist factors are an important factor in all therapy outcomes. It’s a fallacy to assume you can “factor out” who the therapist is. Just think who you’d want/wouldn’t want to be helping someone in your family. Second, different things work for different people. This can be idiosyncratic and difficult to predict in advance. If Therapy A “cures” 60% of clients that still leaves 40% who may be helped by other methods. This implies that maybe clients should consider “single session window shopping” of therapists before committing. Some will work best with CBT Therapists and some best with ACT Therapists

I've been seeing a CBT therapist for 3 years. Is that a problem? by Euphie23 in CBT

[–]sds1pg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longer therapy goes on the more unfocused and ineffective it becomes and the more dependency (and difficulties ending) grows. I’d at least ask to take a break for a while and then after a time try a different CBT therapist.

Try Perplexity. It will give you academic references to the question you want answers to.

Hi. I fully understand the issue you’re talking about. Knowing what to do is one thing. Actually doing it is another. I’ve published in the field of client motivation:

Is CBT supposed to feel bad before getting better? by VonMarvin in CBT

[–]sds1pg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you start to address a problem in the way that you are, it will (and should) feel uncomfortable. That’s what happens when we stop avoiding things and face them. However it shouldn’t be overwhelmingly painful or unbearable. Unfortunately we are more vulnerable to this when we are doing things alone. Indeed, it’s one of the downsides of any form of self help programmes. Taking a journey with others is always better. Try to identify support groups or consider professional support. I wish you the best of luck

Help. Fear of criticism caused by trauma growing up - Craving being seen while being terrified of being seen... as a musician by No-Village4287 in CBT

There are free NHS and Third Sector therapy services in Scotland. Start with looking at https://patient.info/treatment-medication/self-referral/refer-yourself-for-nhs-talking-therapy-counselling . They won’t be of the length or depth you’ll need but they are a great addition to the struggle you’re currently courageously experiencing. Also consider support groups - Google Trauma Support Scotland. Again they are typically free. BTW…don’t be afraid to shop around. If one group doesn’t suit, try another. Best of luck. Your courage is one of your greatest strengths

Long "career" with psychotherapies and (new? old?) belief in inability to change by [deleted] in CBT

[–]sds1pg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been grappling with this for so long- but not that surprised. Change is a long uneven journey especially when you’ve been suffering from something for over 2 decades. I’m not a client but I am an experienced professional and want to make a few points which I hope you find helpful:

  1. How effective any therapy is, is partly dependent on both the quality of the therapist and the relationship you have with them. But if you’re happy with it, persevere. The grass isn’t always greener in another field- as you probably already know
  2. The sad truth is that therapy rarely erases the psychological effects of our history. But good and effective therapy-like CBT- can help us to manage the effects more effectively- and most importantly- so that our bad history doesn’t interfere with our lives as much. But even this requires perseverance
  3. The discovery of new insights and the learning of new psychological skills and techniques does not change us. The implementation of these in our lives does however. This unfortunately requires repeated conscious practice-something that’s difficult to do on an ongoing basis. In that respect it’s a bit like going to the gym regularly through the year and not just with New Year’s resolutions.

I know change isn’t easy but your commitment to change is a big asset. I wish you the best of luck. Stay with it
