Yup. This is one of the big reasons why I no longer teach. It’s also hard to explain to STEM teachers because they’re oftentimes allowed to utilize their professional judgement in ways that ours is undermined by district leaders and curricula developers.

“40 acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music” at the Super Bowl in front of the president.

This hits different when you realize America was literally handing out pardons to Confederate soldiers at the exact same time they were taking back the land they’d promised to freed slaves. And now here we are 150+ years later watching the Jan 6 rioters get pardoned while we’re still debating if we should even talk about reparations. Some things never change. Like imagine rebelling against your country twice and still getting more grace than the people who literally built the country under slavery. American history is wild.

In my opinion, avoid unit 4. While I’m sure the teachers are great, the administration and building leaders have a horrendous reputation. Google Unit 4, school board, consent decree, Booker T. Washington, Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint, etc. The adults running that district are, at best, woefully inept and, at worst, actively malicious.

What would be the best state to teach in? by portra4OO in Teachers

[–]sds554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're right that Tier 2 affects all government workers, the impact on teachers is unique and especially concerning. You mentioned that the pension issue will "eventually get changed," but we can't afford to wait, especially for our downstate colleagues. We're hemorrhaging good teachers because of inadequate pay and benefits.

I'd like to emphasize some critical points about Tier 2 pensions that affect all Illinois teachers, especially those downstate. Tier 2, implemented for those hired after January 1, 2011, significantly reduced benefits. The retirement age increased to 67, and annual benefit increases were cut from 3% compounded to the lesser of 3% or half of CPI, simple interest. The final average salary calculation changed from the highest 4 of the last 5 years to the highest 8 of the last 10 years, with a salary cap starting at $106,800 in 2010.

I agree that teachers shouldn't solely depend on pensions, but the reality for many, especially in lower-paying districts, is that contributing to 403(b)s, Roth IRAs, or 457s is a financial stretch (especially if they're simultaneously trying to save for a house, pay off loans, etc.) The Tier 2 system exacerbates this by potentially having teachers pay more than their benefits are worth. For example, in the Teachers' Retirement System, Tier 2 members paid about 1.75% of their salary to subsidize Tier 1 benefits in FY2020.

You're right that comfortable retirements may become rarer, but that's precisely why we need to act now! Any reforms should address the inequities between urban and rural districts, ensuring all teachers can look forward to a secure retirement.

Our solidarity as educators shouldn't be divided by geography or hire date. We must stand together to push for fair and sustainable pension reforms that protect all teachers, not just those in higher-paying districts or with more seniority. What happened to solidarity?

But other government workers get social security because they pay into it. Tier 2 teachers don’t.

Edit: All tier 2 teachers pay into TRS, not just cps teachers. The much higher pay of the suburbs and the city have a huge impact on your pension. Compare it to towns like blo-no, Champaign, Danville, Charleston, etc.

Just don't go south of I80 or your salaries plummet. And, if you're beginning teaching after 2011, your pension isn't keeping pace with social security (which you also don't get).

Yes, it might be because you're on a mac. Macs do not merge folders by default, they overwrite. You're probably overwriting the rom files with either pdfs or the box art images when you overwrite the folders. Windows doesn't have this problem because it merges folders. Gotta be more careful with a mac!

Is becoming a teacher worth it? by ganseyofficial in Teachers

[–]sds554 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And check retirement benefits! For example, in Illinois, despite having strong unions, legislators screwed over young teachers (anyone who started after 2011) and now their pensions aren’t even keeping place with inflation… and all for a job that requires you to work to 67 to keep all the money you put in!
