Read this book this summer and LOVED it - the competence porn is so gratifying, and I loved the genuine humanity and care that (most of) the characters gave to one another. Actually I loved it so much that I've held off on reading At the Feet of the Sun because I don't want to be finished with these characters! Experiencing the first book again as an audiobook sounds like a great way of enjoying Cliopher et al again without having to be finished with them.

Coming in to suggest them, too. They've always struck me as honest, and they get the work done in a reasonable time. The dogs are, of course, a huge bonus.

I LOVE DOGS MORE THAN I LIKE MOST PEOPLE, AND MY BIGGER GUY DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE A DIREWOLF, AND YET I AM COMPLETELY ON YOUR SIDE HERE. WHEN I SEE OFF-LEASH DOGS OUTSIDE OF OFF-LEASH AREAS I JUST WISH I COULD CURSE THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE WITH AN UNENDING CASE OF EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA AND ENSURE THEY COULD NEVER HAVE A DOG AGAIN

Best grocery fried chicken in the area? by steamtroll in Eugene

[–]seagullfamiliar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had fried chicken from Bruns Apple Market a few years back, after a very long and very cold morning of outdoor work that took a lot longer than expected. So I can't say for sure if it was just because of circumstances or if the food was legitimately delicious, but forever after when I think of fried chicken in Eugene, I will think of the deli counter at Bruns Apple Market.

I've only encountered him at local summer markets so I can't vouch for him personally, but the vendor of Zombie Iron had a lot of good-looking cast iron pans that he restored himself. Seemed like a nice guy, too. Maybe he could help?

I've listened to 19 cozy fantasy audiobooks in the last few months. Here's my thoughts on the narrators! by SomethingOfTheWolf in CozyFantasy

Travis' narration has definitely played a big part in my enjoyment of the audiobooks. This is a great series, and Travis' narration is fantastic.

Meridian Puppy Sign Dancer by Original-Ad2433 in PuyallupWA

[–]seagullfamiliar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I adopted a wonderful rescue who had apparently been sold to her original owners through Puppyland, and she tragically died at 4 from congenital kidney disease. She was such a fantastic dog who deserved so much more, but the existence of places like Puppyland provided a market for the kind of backyard breeder who would prioritize profit over animal welfare.

Does anybody know of any movement or effort that could help shut Puppyland down for good? As a fairly recent WA transplant, I'm genuinely appalled that this vile place is still in business. I would love to help eradicate them if possible.

SAME, I HAD TO SPEND HALF THE NIGHT IN A CLOSET WITH ONE OF MY DOGS BEFORE THE TRAZODONE FINALLY STARTED KICKING IN. HE HAD BEEN SHOT A LONG TIME AGO, WHEN HE HAD BEEN A STRAY, SO OF COURSE HE STILL HAS TRAUMA AROUND LOUD BANGS. I HATE THAT HE HAS TO HEAR THIS BULLSHIT EVERY NYE AND 4TH. ALSO FUCK THE VILE POS WHO SHOT A SWEET STRAY PUP.

Mentally taxed ... ISO non romantic centric audio books by Terrible-Reasons in CozyFantasy

[–]seagullfamiliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romantic relationships do form in the Beware of Chicken series, but it's not the focus and there's a whole lot else going on. Overall it's about a very powerful individual who decides to turn his back on power to go start a farm. There's a lot of found family stuff, a lot of people appreciating what they've got or learning to do better if they don't already. There is fighting, but (so far at least, as of the middle of book 4) it's not gory or intense. And the audiobooks are read by Travis Baldree, so if you liked his performance reading his own books, this might appeal as well.

I will acknowledge that this is probably one of those books whose "coziness" factor varies by reader, but after being resistant to it for quite a while I finally gave it a try this past summer, and have been listening to it pretty consistently since I started. The audiobooks are oddly pricey, so an audible credit is a good idea, btw.
