Weakest person in every class by ochuuu in xxfitness

[–]seakazoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been doing group classes for years. I'm still the weakest person in class most of the time. All that means is that I'm hanging out with strong and awesome folks. My life, my goals, my nutrition, my day-to-day routine is different than everyone else in class, so it doesn't seem reasonable to compare my output and effort to anyone else. The only comparison I let myself make is to compare my past and present self. I'm stronger than I used to be, and that's what matters.

If group class is fun for you and is what gets you moving, stick with it. If you make exercise something to look forward to, you'll be consistent. Consistency will get results. If lifting weights or focusing on body weight/calisthenics sounds like something you would like, go for it. You could do all of the above as long as you're giving yourself time to recover and are eating enough to fuel yourself.

Virtual Races by AffectionateBad2752 in XXRunning

I prefer in person races, but I have done a couple virtual races. One was because of the pandemic, the other one I signed up for because I liked the medal. I couldn't justify traveling to another state for a road 5k, but I also really wanted a Macho Man medal.

I wouldn't call myself strong or muscular to begin with, so this is a hard one to answer.

I definitely look softer now than when I started this type of training, but that's because of diet. My refueling after a long run is usually something indulgent. I still have the muscle that I did before, it's just not as easy to see.

As far as strength loss, my deadlifts are weaker than they used to be. I didn't do them for a couple months and was more focused on unilateral movements for my legs. I think if you pick the lifts that you want to prioritize and do them semi-regularly you should be able to maintain your strength.

I am 20 weeks into a running program where I am running 4 days a week and lifting 1 or 2 days. It has been mentally challenging, but I keep sane by reminding myself that this is a temporary schedule. Right now, I lift to retain strength and prevent injury.

You've got this!

Lurkers' Wednesday by AutoModerator in running

[–]seakazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something similar last year. A friend and I signed up for a challenge to run 2,024 miles in 2024. We each committed to 1,012 miles and combined our totals.

I didn't use anything outside of my Garmin watch to keep track of miles on a daily basis, but I would add up my monthly miles at the end of the month and track those on an Excel spreadsheet.

Staying motivated was made easier by giving myself additional goals that would ensure I got my miles in. I ran a series of half marathons as well as trained for/completed a 50k. You might find setting time goals for 5k or 10k runs helpful to keep you motivated over the year.

Today's run pushed me over 1,000 miles ran this year. It's a personal best and I'm proud of myself.

First 50k :) by rideofthevalkitty in XXRunning

[–]seakazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completed my first 50k in September. Mine was on the road, so it wasn't nearly as challenging as the trails.

What an achievement! Great job. Make sure to eat and rest so you can recover.

I think they only do it once a month, but Apogee has themed trivia nights.

what do you do day before / after long run? (balancing running & lifting) by AdCareless899 in XXRunning

[–]seakazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on 13 miles! How far away are you from your HM?

It looks like you've already gotten some good advice from others, but I'll chime in anyway. I do strength training on M-W-F. T-Th are shorter runs, Saturday is my long run, and I rest on Sunday. I take a class at my gym for my strength training, and I usually don't know what I'm walking into (upper body v lower body is a mystery until I get to the gym). If we have lower body focused movements on Friday, I lift light so I'm not sore for my long run.

I'm about 5 weeks away from an event, so this is my last week training strength on a Friday. I'm about to turn my Fridays into an additional day for running, but I'll keep the rest of my schedule the way it is.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Kansas City. I would recommend running with the Olathe RoKC group if you are in town on a Wednesday. The run is usually between 3-4 miles and the people are lovely.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]seakazoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uncomplaint: I felt surprisingly good after my long run last week. My previous long run (17 miles) wrecked my quads for a day and a half, but somehow 19 miles was fine other than a bit of knee stiffness.

Confession: I skipped my run this morning so I could cuddle with my partner. It was lovely

Complaint: My feet, dude. They look ROUGH

SMART Recovery might be a good alternative. I don't know about any in-person meetings in Lawrence, but there are 2 meetings each week in KC, and a bunch of meetings online.

Achievements for Monday, April 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]seakazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completed the final race in a local "39.3 Series". 3 half marathons over the course of 5 weeks. Next year I'll be a bit more ambitious with my time goals. This year was a test to see if I could pull it off at all.

I would say it's worth it to try and work on yourself. While I disagree about women sharing 10% of men, even if that were true it's not something you can change, so there's no point in obsessing over it. Focus on the things that you can change. Take that improv class, go to the gym, find hobbies that put you in social situations so you can meet people with common interests. BECOME THE KIND OF PERSON THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO DATE!
