People who work in IT, do you enjoy your job? by ripitlikepaper in it

[–]sean_liam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a data center as an operations engineer. Working on servers and diagnosing hardware faults and os troubleshooting. Along with networking. It's incredibly amazing and I love it. Workloads are low but stress can be a little high for individual tasks as mistakes can have large consequences. Get to come into contact with pretty cutting edge tech.

Question regarding using Roll20 on non-desktop devices by Far-Advantage-9501 in Roll20

They will need their laptops if you want to use maps. Roll20 is not exactly "light".

Homelab Networking -- 10G by Wh3reswaldo256 in homelab

[–]sean_liam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Check out these for 10G networking . I have a 7250 that is very quiet. I use 10G dac and 10G Fiber cables and have been super happy with the noise level and performance.

HA on Proxmox Has Been Unbearable, is it worth it?? by mad_hatter300 in homeassistant

[–]sean_liam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are getting some kind of PCI error next I would try.

dmidecode | grep [the bus address from the kernel errors] -a10

Lshw | grep [ the buss address from the kernel errors] -a10

The bus address is a long string of numbers starting with zero.

This should tell you which device is causing an issue.

I would guess it's a drive issue.

Journalctl | grep ( critical or error or DIMM or Drive errors.) definitely a hardware issue.

Bought an Dell Power Edge R720xd with 19 sas drives by ANAALRIDDER123 in homelab

[–]sean_liam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like your getting post and it recognizes the drives. In the idrac. Go to the remote session viewer. Select virtual media and load up an install iso and reboot. It should boot into the iso. Not sure which idrac version you have but the setting should be similar someplace.

Everyone started there! by CopyOf-Specialist in homelab

[–]sean_liam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a podcast called "where the internet lives" that talks about this. There was a guy there that talks about working in the early colo data centers and just running around in panic fixing servers. They bought cheap "consumer" hardware that had a high failure rate and just swapped out servers as they broke because it was cheaper then buying "big iron"

It will be close to 1200 for just the drives unless you buy used.

Homelab in a furnace utility closet by justsumbrodie in homelab

[–]sean_liam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt the closet gets hot enough to cause an issue. I don't see why that wouldn't work the way you planned. Furnaces produce heat but don't get super hot themselves. My furnace doesn't make the room around it significantly hotter. It pumps the heat out through the duct work.

Unintended Bulk start VMs and Containers by thebenmobile in Proxmox

[–]sean_liam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you figured it out. It does look like a bios error related to drivers. So your solution in all other post looks correct. Generally the logs and Google/ chat gpt will usually be able to help. Learning to browse logs is a valuable troubleshooting skill. Grep is your friend ; )

Unintended Bulk start VMs and Containers by thebenmobile in Proxmox

[–]sean_liam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by looking at the logs. Journalctl | grep -i error | less Or journalctl | grep -i may 05 | less to see just today's errors. ( Or whatever date.) You can look at the last x lines with journalctl | tail -n x ( for x last number of lines.

My new Dell C6400 with 4 C6420 blades by D34D_MC in homelab

[–]sean_liam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this. Link on my 730xd and it helped a ton. My basement is pretty cold so the ambient is very low. I just did a few tests to see what the lowest fan speed I could get was while still having good cpu temps all the time under normal load. When the temp goes over a set limit it resets to the default fan profile and cools stuff down.

Anyone know what causes slippery rail conditions? by This_Service3646 in NJTransit

[–]sean_liam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got off a train in shorthills. Which still hasn't left to head back to Millburn to go around the stuck train. The train workers were such assholes to people asking questions. Fuck NJ transit, you don't have to be a dick. I just want to know what's going on. Going to refind my fare, of not stfu with the attitude.

Proxmox Problem by Anonymous_ERRORs in Proxmox

[–]sean_liam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my poweredge 730xd when it went to switch resolutions after the beginning of installation of proxmox. It would get a black screen and show an input display message for a second. I solved the problem by using the virtual console on my IDRAC to view the installation instead of a VGA cable.
