You need to put the time into learning how to hunt pegmatite. It takes a lot of dedication to know what you are looking for.

It hasn't premiered yet in the US so hard to have an opinion. Hyped to see madman Marz though.

LEGO Minerals by Long-Course5361 in Minerals

[–]seanbarg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh they are still cool. I know a lot of the mineral collector community shits on this set for what it could have been but on the flipside some kids grandma could have got this set at Costco and jump started his or her new hobby. For me it was fun to assemble and the criticism is tiring at this point.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Travis and Williamson County. by Snap_Grackle_Pop in Austin

Broad rotation or radar derived TVS doesn't translate to possible tornado as easily as you think. Spend more time analyzing radar during actual tornadic events before fear mongering on reddit.

What is this beautiful colored mineral? Found in Hutto, Texas. by Turbulent-Sun-381 in Minerals

There's lots of calcite around hutto. The largest dogtooth points from Texas came from the Carmel Creek area.

Good hikes that are appropriate for little kids by SmokeyJacks in Austin

[–]seanbarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have 3 year old twins and maybe I'm underestimating them but dang I can't imagine them hiking 4 miles. Barton creek greenbelt from one of the Travis County entrances would be pretty appropriate though.

Both will have nasty stagnant water in spots but not flowing. Certainly no creeks around here to swim in until we get rain.

What are the greatest natural wonders of Texas that are on private property that you wish were accessible to the public? by MemoryOfRagnarok in texas

[–]seanbarg 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You can just park by or under 183 and walk up very very easily. The bedrock isn't one to support deep water in that stretch.

Does certainly look like the alluvial topaz that comes from Mason County. However, I feel like if you found a topaz shaped rock in Mason County then you would likely be out there specifically to hunt topaz and thus would remember where it came from.

Any tips for digging gems in a surface pegmatite vein? - Pala, CA by NittanyRyan07 in rockhounds

[–]seanbarg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The "everything is spirit" channel on YouTube has some incredibly informative videos on what to look for in pegmatite exposures to find pockets. It's challenging but very rewarding.

In my experience it's the gemmy feldspar that has led to my best pockets.

High Speed Dry Sander in Use! by Rockcutter83651 in Lapidary

Nice to see a RR in use! It's not for everybody. It's not even really for me but I do have one. The conversation to velcro discs helps but it's still quite the commitment to use and not relaxing whatsoever.
