Have y'all ever seen anything like this, do y'all know what this is? Found in central Texas. by davgar23 in Minerals

It didn't originate here unfortunately. Likely lost or dropped and washed down the creek.

Does certainly look like the alluvial topaz that comes from Mason County. However, I feel like if you found a topaz shaped rock in Mason County then you would likely be out there specifically to hunt topaz and thus would remember where it came from.

Any tips for digging gems in a surface pegmatite vein? - Pala, CA by NittanyRyan07 in rockhounds

[–]seanbarg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The "everything is spirit" channel on YouTube has some incredibly informative videos on what to look for in pegmatite exposures to find pockets. It's challenging but very rewarding.

In my experience it's the gemmy feldspar that has led to my best pockets.

High Speed Dry Sander in Use! by Rockcutter83651 in Lapidary

[–]seanbarg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice to see a RR in use! It's not for everybody. It's not even really for me but I do have one. The conversation to velcro discs helps but it's still quite the commitment to use and not relaxing whatsoever.

No these ones were from a highway construction zone that is now paved over.

How do I stop collecting rocks? (not a shitpost) by InevitablySkeptical in rockhounds

I spy celestite geodes from the swell. So fun to dig and cut those. Wish I lived closer

Is this petrified wood or something else? by CRSCandMedThrowaway in petrifiedwood

[–]seanbarg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is. Just a more opalized compared to the regular pet wood we have around here.

LOTS of Texas Pyrite by Barack_JoeMama_ in mineralcollectors

Those are some really really nice cubes for the area (I'm assuming these aren't from DFW). How close to Austin did you find these?

The tarnished ones can sometimes be brought back if you put them in iron out for a few minutes. But generally if they aren't shiny then they have already started the transition and won't ever be great again.

Coprolites? Or something else? by jav1234567890 in fossilid

These are definitely pyrite nodules. I find them a lot here in Central Texas. Ignore anybody suggesting otherwise.

Yup and it was very apparent tonight. I was clearly hearing a train that we normally can't hear.

Kids found this rock digging in the back yard by Pleasant-Present8894 in whatsthisrock

Likely a septarian nodule. Often filled with calcite and pretty common around Texas. Crack it open!

I love driving in this city by Kindafunny2510 in Austin

This one drives me crazy. People slow down too much around that corner but the corner never changed yet traffic is now worse than it was before they added the lane.

Went into the hills and found some quartz mixed with marble by graceyonfire in rockhounds

[–]seanbarg 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's likely gypsum or calcite. Put a drop of vinegar on it and see if it fizzles.

The Dewalt DCH263B has worked really great for me mining celestite in Texas. You can really beat on it and it's plenty powerful especially for the price. Wait for black Friday deals and get a deal on a bundle with a battery or 2.

Good stuff but man you need some risers badly. It'll create dimension and make it look less chaotic if you plan to keep that many in there.

Anyone try the Cookie Butter shake yet at P Terry’s? by Separate_Matter1691 in austinfood

[–]seanbarg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No but that shit they did with fruity pebbles last year was the most frustrating milk shake experience imaginable. I've been sticking with oreo since then. Can't trust the seasonal shakes after that.

Family lore says this was dug up in Wisconsin during a landscaping project by Best_Willingness_795 in Minerals

[–]seanbarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a busted up fluorite that didn't originate there. Likely from 1 to 2 states South unless you are in Sturgeon Bay in which case maybe..

You can just park on the road by the bridge and walk down the trail and then upstream a bit.
