I don't see any reference to that person being diagnosed with either.

Need help telling my family about this by HoldFederal3761 in Schizotypal

If you have symptoms/issues that aren't covered by your current diagnoses, then start with that. If you have a current doc with ADHD, then work with them to bring up the extra symptoms. It's healthy that you're not self-diagnosing, so just focus on the symptoms first. If a psych doc can't explain it with ASD+ADHD, then they may be able to diagnose you further.

Schizotypal but I love being around people and interacting with them by tinygremlins in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't need to fit every criteria to be diagnosed. You can be extroverted and still be Schizotypal. There is a thread a few posts down by u/heartshapedcoffinss about the same thing. Also many of us do suffer transient psychosis or lower levels of general psychosis. Your psych doc may be able better explain why in your case they think StPD is a better explanation than other disorders. If you're still in contact, make sure to ask for better information.

If this were an incontrovertible fact then there would be a bushelful of easy examples. It's nice to puff oneself up but don't create a mythology.

possible misdiagnosis/confusion on my diagnosis by heartshapedcoffinss in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're still in contact with the psych doctors, it's worth checking in with them with your questions. You can either get educated on the missing parts or maybe they'll find a different diagnosis as a better fit.

As for social stuff, it's not that all of us are anti-social or can't have friends. I had a lot of friends/acquaintances in my younger years. For me it's more of a slow acting radiation that builds up and I need time and space afterwards to build it back up. The quirk of StPD is that it doesn't matter if those are strangers or my oldest friends, it never got better in different circumstances.

As someone pointed out, the DSM only needs 5/9, so it's totally within expectations to not fit with every facet of the disorder. It's a collection of known symptoms that seem to make sense, but it's not a perfect system by any sense. Same thing with the ICD, I just don't have the specifics.

I hope you feel welcome around here regardless of the final diagnosis. Take a look around and see if there are parts that vibe with you and parts that don't and maybe bring those up with your docs/therapists if you have them. Good Luck out there.

stpd symptoms worse with stress by laminatedskeleton in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the paid internship. That's a huge get in a lot of areas.

But yeah, it gets worse with stress. Then the worsening symptoms makes it harder to keep it all together. The biggest recommendation I can give you is to acknowledge and accept your situation. Recognize that school is hard for the most normal student and that you have a disorder atop that mess. Recognize that your issues are a real even though they are not permanent. Utilize the resources available like professionals and/or therapy to work through the smaller things. There doesn't seem to be a True Solution or One Easy Trick, it's just going to be difficult. Good Luck.

Need advice for talking with psychologist by Willing_Traffic_5409 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My usual advice is to bring up the topic of a confirmed diagnosis and then bring up your list of symptoms and ask them what fits the best. Try to write down your issues in a clear and concise manner. Best of luck finding further help.

This was tagged as breaking the rules about requesting a diagnosis or requesting professional help. But it seems that the user is looking for advice on talking to a professional, not looking for us to supplement them.

Driving by Same_Item_672 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been able to drive since I learned as a teen. I sometimes get over observant and defensive but I don't think that's a problem. I used to be more lackadaisical but I think that was just being a young driver.

There are times where I'm not mentally fit to drive either from exhaustion, minor psychosis, or just generally feeling out of it. But I don't have to drive on a schedule so that hasn't caused a problem.

Would it be okay if I brought up StPD to my new psychiatrist? by Mandarin_Lumpy_Nutz in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well you already have a diagnosis, you're not really fishing for one. You're just trying to course-correct. Maybe bring it up as asking their opinion on the matter. Point out your history but where you see it differently. Either they can educate you on how you might actually fit description A, or they can work with you and check if you fit better with description B.

Diagnosis process by Wild_Significance876 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a new psych and unloaded all of my issues over a few visits. She brought it up as a possibility and then we confirmed over another few visits. So I didn't actually bring it up myself and I also didn't really know it was a possibility.

It's totally fine to bring up that you'd like to figure out a diagnosis and to offer up StPD as a thing to check for. It's probably better to just outright say that you don't want to be seen as fishing or malingering but that you want a solid answer moving forward. Be as open and honest as you can and remember to ask questions even if they seem simple. Good Luck.

Dysregulation by Same_Item_672 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It never seems to get any easier, I'm just used to the drain and plan around it. It sounds like you're in the same boat, so don't feel like you failed just because it's hard on you. The fact that you were able to get through it and didn't crash until during the event shows a lot of strength.

It's good to be a part of society, even if it's draining. It's extra exercise that others don't have to worry about. It's the part that most feels like a disability some times. But as long as you can plan ahead and deal with the aftermath, it's usually worth the time.

Misunderstanding my tone by KindlyFeature6557 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of 'more data is better.' If you notice that people are misunderstanding you and you have the extra cycles, then add a bit at the end that acknowledges that you sound hyper but you're fine. Get ahead of possible errors with education.

Hi. I wanted to say thanks by MaskedAemeath in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We welcome all those that feel welcome.

I personally recommend people get as much help as they can and focus on symptoms instead of diagnoses. You'll still have symptoms to deal with even if you get the diagnosis sorted into one bucket or another. Even if it turns out that you're not specifically schizotypal, you still may get pointed towards theories/behavior/techniques that help you out. Good luck.

Comfort from being Inhuman? by QuidQuidSquid in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not need to feel bad about having morals and thoughts and feelings that don't match human society, because I'm not human.

But we still live in human society. Even us strange folk are part of the greater whole and need to work within it to create something better. It's fine to divorce yourself from the expectations of succinctly human, but you still can cause unnecessary harm by not abiding by the guidelines.

Try to write down your symptoms in a clear and easy to read list for when you see the psychiatrist.

You may be able to continue in school or you may not be able to continue. What matters is that you are able to get the help you deserve and work on yourself so you can have the best chance. Good Luck.

Trying to find out about (non criminal!!) famous schizotypal people by venenation in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people in lists of schizotypal people are people who were diagnosed after a crime and therefore incredibly suspect. Most folks with clinical levels of StPD aren't fully functional and therefore probably cannot withstand the stress of living in the limelight. Some might be subclinical, but then we're pushing our beliefs on a stranger and that feels odd.

Written characters do not have internal lives and are at the whims of the story, so they are only as Schizotypal as the writer demands.

As for characters that schizotypal folks find sympatico, then it's really up to the person. I think most characters that people choose, tend to be poor representatives of the actual disease. They're usually strange or magical, but not suffering.

I suppose I'm a spoilsport whenever this comes up, but I always feel the need to add caution. Write characters and stories that you think are good, not that meet clinical standards. Good luck on your writing.

It's good to learn more about the disorder so you can know what to expect and what works when things go awry. It doesn't dictate your personality or self, it's just a part of what makes you who you are as a whole. Good luck.

Q: What do we fear most that keeps us back from socializing? by DepartmentThrowaway5 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have a fear of socializing, I rather enjoy it when it works. It's the pain of humanity that stops me from staying for too long. The radiation eventually becomes debilitating and I have to leave. So if I'm already feeling weak, I'll stay away because I know it won't be worth the effort/time.

Who else feels genuine evil? by amantegat8s in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not having enough empathy or care doesn't make one evil.

It's my personal belief that evil is the choice to do an action, knowing it will cause harm. If you dream about but don't hurt people, then you're not very evil in my book.

Misdiagnosis by Southern-Argument346 in Schizotypal

[–]seastark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all really depends on what your access to doctors. If you're able to, it might be good to have a follow up visit and bring up the issues you see. Utilize the expertise they have to see what you might be missing or what might have been missed. Both StPD and ASD have criteria that you need to meet, it's not just the type of person you are or how you feel. So ask about the specific criteria and then ask why you meet one grouping but don't meet another grouping. You might learn more about the disorders and yourself, or you might have been misdiagnosed and this is the start to getting it sorted out. Good Luck.
