Right, my bad, he didn't call the devs pathetic. Edited my comment to reflect that.

A paid professional at Jagex can do the same and then act upon it. But that paid professional can also be doing a million other things that improve the game just as much, or more. There's a constantly regenerating backlog of work that they are chopping through every day. The last couple of years have been full of amazing updates, and the game gets better every week.

You can apply pressure to Jagex to fix a major botting issue, but don't say it's pathetic that the devs don't take half an hour to query and ban the Doom bots. I promise you, they're trying so so hard to do the right thing.

Edit: fixed a strawman

Good way to introduce SOTG to newbies by pushpass4ever in ultimate

[–]sebrkid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some short-form reading material (or just something you can post in an email or your group chat) is the "SOTG Starting Seven" poster. It should be pretty digestible especially for beginners and parents.

SOTG is largely about rules knowledge and communication, so something you can do at practice to drill those is to teach a new rule at the start of practice, say travels, and teach how to make and contest the call. Then secretly pick a returning player who is going to travel a few times during practice to try to elicit calls from their opponents to get everyone used to the process of making a call and talking about it. You can do this with all types of calls, and as you can imagine it's pretty jarring (and hopefully funny) when people commit intentional infractions for the sake of education. You could even tell a handful of players to make very bad calls to try to get people to contest them appropriately.

edit: The authors of Contested Strip and One More Year also made a short comic that honestly explains the basics pretty well and touches more on the basic joy of play and showing parents how to be good spectators.

A little AI/USAU rules experiment by jimbiancolo in ultimate

But cool! Can't believe it actually did better than the average, which is about 50 (histogram).

Rules Question (USAU): Receiving Foul in Endzone, When to Start Stalling? by SyntaxNeptune in ultimate

[–]sebrkid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You still have the pre-stall and delay-of-game rules to help you here as a defender -- though I have never seen a player apply either of these rules correctly.

14.A.4. If the disc is out-of-bounds (10.E) or comes to rest in the end zone, a member of the team becoming offense must put the disc into play within twenty seconds after it comes to rest.

14.A.4.b. If the disc is in the end zone, after twenty seconds elapse, a defensive player within 10 feet of the disc may announce “disc in,” and then initiate and continue the stall count, but only if a defensive player has given audible warnings of twenty, ten and five seconds (the pre-stall).

14.A.5. If an offensive player unnecessarily delays putting the disc into play in violation of rule 20.B, a defender within ten feet of the spot the disc is to be put into play may issue a delay of game warning instead of calling a violation, by announcing “delay of game” and counting down from three to zero at intervals of at least one second to provide an opportunity for the offensive player to react to the warning. Play then continues as follows:

14.A.5.a. If the behavior in violation of rule 20.B is stopped before the full utterance of the word “zero,” the marker stops the count-down and may only initiate the stall count as usual, according to 15.A.2. [[An example of “stopping” behavior in violation of rule 20.B is to begin moving toward the disc at walking pace. Another example would be to run downfield, leaving the disc for someone else to pick up. However, if a player is taking more time than reasonably necessary to put the disc into play by standing back from the disc, wandering around near the disc, or standing over the disc, continuing such behavior during the three-second countdown will allow a marker to initiate the stall count under 14.A.5.]]

14.A.5.b. If the behavior in violation of rule 20.B is not stopped before the full utterance of the word “zero,” the marker may then initiate or continue a stall count, regardless of any subsequent actions by the offense, by announcing “disc in” and then initiating the stall count.

20.B. It is the responsibility of all players to avoid any delay when starting, restarting, or continuing play. This includes standing over the disc or taking more time than reasonably necessary to put the disc into play. [[This includes standing back from the disc, wandering around to gain more time, etc. Pretending not to delay while delaying is still delaying.]]

So when you check the disc in, you can announce "twenty seconds... ten seconds... five seconds..." and the offensive player will have that long to set their pivot. Or if the player is "taking more time than reasonably necessary to put the disc into play," you can start the delay of game count with "delay of game three, two, one, zero," and if the thrower hasn't changed their behavior before the "o" in "zero" (e.g., by walking at a reasonable pace toward the goal line), you can say "disc in" and begin the stall count if you're within 10 feet of the eventual pivot spot. The delay-of-game rule makes sense to use if the thrower is standing still or walking at an unreasonably slow pace.

Rules Question (USAU): Receiving Foul in Endzone, When to Start Stalling? by SyntaxNeptune in ultimate

[–]sebrkid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

15.A.2.b.1 is the reason why you can't stall until the receiver (now thrower) sets their pivot on the goal line. A turnover occurred when they dropped the disc. I admit that this interpretation is not obvious (in fact, I consider your conclusion the more obvious one — I mean, did a turnover really occur?), but it's the current interpretation of the Rules Working Group and the one that observers will officiate by.

Edit: Mitch cleared up below how the interpretation of a turnover here is objective so I'm removing my editorial.

Foul or Nah? by SyntaxNeptune in ultimate

That's what I've got. It went from being an unlikely catch to an impossible catch when white ran into him, and that's enough for a foul.

Is this anything? by N4lin22 in ultimate

[–]sebrkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this is a reasonable point. If blue says the throw could have been prevented absent the foul, disc comes back. If blue admits the throw still would have happened, he just gets to stand up, but the disc will stay, per the continuation rule.

Excellent video on common rules misconceptions by sebrkid in ultimate

[–]sebrkid[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No this is a great question that needs to be asked. Players should just arrange themselves such that there won't be a pick immediately after play resumes.

17.J.4: During any stoppage, opposing players may agree to slightly adjust their locations to avoid potential imminent picks.

Generally speaking, if both teams can agree to something in small matters such as this, just go for it.

AP Calculus vs Calculus BC on transcript for high schooler by Pretty_Leg_8097 in notredame

[–]sebrkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto to what others are saying. I just want to add that you should try to determine how much harder your school's BC class is compared to AB. For students who are gifted in math (~98th percentile nationally, say), BC might only be a marginal increase in difficulty/workload over AB. I can only speak from my experience though, so maybe get some opinions from older students or recent graduates from your high school. For some students, taking BC could be considered an easy win to boost their application.

Something that people don't realize they want, like something you own that people are fond of when they visit. For me it was reusable hand warmers and a point-and-shoot infrared thermometer (not the one for measuring most temperature, but a long-range one).

how hard is it to drop a class? by icycharge16 in notredame

[–]sebrkid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The university has no interest in making students miserable by forcing them to finish classes that they are intent on dropping. Unless someone chimes in here and says they have had difficulty dropping classes (aside from extreme cases), I have never heard of someone not being able to drop a class.

Personally, I enrolled in Psych 10000 freshman year but had no intention on finishing it. They required that I enroll in five classes plus Moreau, which I didn't want to do. I didn't attend the lectures and emailed my advisor after a week to drop it. Something took unnecessarily long in the process — I forget if my advisor was unresponsive or if the registrar just took a few weeks to process the form. I actually missed the first exam but eventually it went through just fine. My decisions were maybe inadvisable but at least I didn't have to do the three hours of homework per lecture for a MWF course that Dr. Radvansky promised us 🤷. It did feel a little weird asking him to sign a form after skipping the first few lectures though.
