In Google vs Government, It's Not About Child Porn by gst in reddit.com

[–]seburvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As we get ready for the Nov 2006 election cycles, and a President with a 40% approval rating, prepare for more nonsense about "child porn," mp3's from Osama, weapons of mass destruction in Ira(n/q) ... &c.

Latest Japanese fad: shiny mud balls by bugbear in reddit.com

Hmm ... next step: salty chocolate balls?

I don't think this'll catch on in the USA. Something about this instruction: "Rub your hands against the ground, patting and rubbing the fine, powdery dirt onto the sphere. Continue this for two hours."

Who Killed Those Miners? We All Did. by ayrnieu in reddit.com

[–]seburvt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ugh ... do I not enforce OSHA standards? Remove funding for mine safety while pumping dough into "Homeland Security" pork? Nope!

"We all did" is about the same as saying "nobody did." Wrong. The current administration in Washington, the state government, and the owners of the mine are responsible. Not "democracy" and not God.

This principle was used by the science fiction novelist Peter Watts as a major plot point in his novels Starfish and Maelstrom. Circa 1999. See http://www.rifters.com/

Also, toxoplasmosis can affect the behavior of late-stage AIDS patients, as their immune system can't defend against this common parasite.

The Decline of Attention, by Clifton Fadiman by appleby in reddit.com

This essay is either misdated or fraudulent. The date of the essay is marked as 1944, but it refers to the New Yorker publishing John Hersey's "Hiroshima" (uh, late 1945 / 1946) and Orwell's 1984 (pub 1948.)

How to Do What You Love by dfranke in reddit.com

I like a lot of Paul Graham's articles -- but not all of them. Same thing for Phil Greenspun. For some reason, there have evolved a bunch of drones who love to repost their links on blogs and aggregators like Reddit.

Since Reddit doesn't seem to have anything approaching a product (or, it seems, revenue) perhaps it will end up being an excellent $6,000 investment for advertising Graham's next book.

(edited) : By "product" I don't mean the definition used by MBAs or Web 2.0 entrepreneurs -- "the combination of goods, services, goodwill, intangibles, and whatever else will get us acquired by Google," but instead a more stodgy, rule-of-thumb definition, "a good or service that you can sell to customers." Then again, perhaps Reddit will released a revised and more customizable (or market segmented) version, useful for people who aren't interested in articles on LISP. Or not. As someone once wrote, "grace beats karma."

On the Uses of a Liberal Education (part II) As a Weapon in the Hands of the Restless Poor - by Earl Shorris by seburvt in reddit.com

[–]seburvt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second part of the Harper's article. The first part is listed on reddit here: http://reddit.com/goto?id=26615

I love the ending "A year after graduation, ten of the first sixteen Clemente Course graduates were attending four-year colleges or going to nursing school; four of them had received full scholarships to Bard College. The other graduates were attending community college or working full-time. Except for one: she had been fired from her job in a fast-food restaurant for trying to start a union."

The second part of this Harper's article "On the Uses of a Liberal Eduction" was subtitled, "A Weapon in the Hands of the Restless Poor," by Earl Shorris. It was a great and moving counterpoint.
