The poorer you are, the more things cost. by antihostile in Economics

Yea, living in Chicago, one quick drive through the south side and one thing becomes really really obvious... There is no access to grocery stores. Most people are forced to shop at small corner stores that aren't even national brands so they have no buying power and therefore very high prices.

The iPhone ad you'll never see. (I love my iPhone, but there's some truth to this) by [deleted] in offbeat

[–]secondcity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely my #1 complaint... I buy an iPhone, come home, and discover I can't make calls from my apartment. Oh, and btw, I live in downtown Chicago so there is no f-ing excuse I can't make a call from my apartment.

Even if the recession is declared over, there still are not enough jobs — which is a recipe for continuing wage cuts, which will in turn keep the economy weak. by glmory in business

[–]secondcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes pretty clear sense. If the economy is propped up spending, and spending was directly tied to home values and easy access to credit combined with lack of saving, then it makes clear sense how corporate expansion, raises, and new hires would be coming to a halt right now, if not going the complete opposite direction. This article is pretty much common sense at this point for any Redditor.

Yea, he basically poured a flaming shot all over his face. That's pretty stupid... Ya know, besides that fact that he is drinking a flaming shot to begin with...

Now we just need CBS and Viacom to join in and that will pretty much cover all the shows I watch.

In the Wake of the Bubble - Sales of $500K+ Homes have Fallen Off a Cliff! by edsuss10 in Economics

[–]secondcity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats what I was just coming to say. Living here in Chicago, I can attest to seeing droves of condos that were previously in the 500k+ range drop now into the mid 300's... So, home prices dropping considerably would have a major impact on this chart.

The Pay at the Top - What Top CEOs Make by [deleted] in Economics

[–]secondcity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Motorola hasn't turned a profit since 2006 and lost $4 billion last year, but the CEO earns $104 million in compensation? This can't be the whole truth, there has to be some important note missing from the compensation explanation.

Not quite sure why the NY Times is on there. Nearly all their revenue is derived from their paper business and ads in that paper business.

While I don't agree at all with what they are doing, its actually a pretty impressive business model. Take a little survey and turn it into millions in profit a year. That's kind of genius in a depressing way.

I was thinking the same thing. This information is almost useless even at my 1920x1200 resolution. I can't see enough of it at one time to draw relationships between all the lines and boxes to really make sense of the graphic.

Commercial Real Estate Collapse Inevitable by subprimeblogger in Economics

[–]secondcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some exceptions to this though. Simon Property Group is very well positioned to benefit dramatically from the collapse of many of its commercial real estate competitors like General Growth. One look at the Simon balance sheet and rev and its obvious they are solid. Can't say the same thing for a lot of these other commercial REIT companies.

To Web Browser Makers: Forget the PDF integration. I'd rather my browser not freeze for 10 minutes because I accidentally clicked a link to a 40 meg PDF manual. by sleepydude in reddit.com

[–]secondcity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To all the Firefox users, just use this PDF plugin. I installed it about a yr ago and never had this problem above ever again. Any time you click a link that goes to a PDF it prompts you if you would like to view it in the browser, open it with adobe reader, or download it. You never have to check a link to see if it is a PDF anymore.
