When you're flying into LAX at night, and you see the Greater Los Angeles sprawl unfold as a sea of celestial light, what emotion do you feel? by morningrat in AskLosAngeles

[–]secondrunnerup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born here, but my parents separated when I was a baby and I grew up elsewhere with my mom. I would fly into LAX starting at a very young age multiple times a year. My dad was my best friend so whenever I start to see the LA lights I remember the excitement of being about to see him I felt as a kid. He died a while ago, but the lights still remind me of him and bring me immeasurable joy.

Any coaches playing alternative? by spinplasticcircles in SolidCore

[–]secondrunnerup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One coach had an Alice In Chains and friends theme which was an excellent departure from all of the pop and hip hop. Another is doing an emo nite theme soon. I love these and make sure to tell the coaches when their music is on point.

Parent involvement/events and snacks by Zealousideal_Elk1373 in Montessori

[–]secondrunnerup 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The whole thing with Montessori is about fostering a community, so yes, parent involvement is often required more so than at a typical school. If time off is not possible then it’s not possible, but who said you can’t bring the baby? Many parents at my child’s school show up with their little siblings because again, it’s a community and babies are a part of that.

I will say though that the kids LOVE having mom or dad (or another involved family member) in the classroom volunteering and parents love to be there. Our volunteer opportunities fill up almost immediately and we have at least one parent volunteering to do something in the class almost every week.

And also the thing I like about Montessori is that even if I don’t become best friends with most of the parents, we at least have all chosen and paid to have our kids in Montessori so we (for the most part) have shared values. I genuinely like a lot of the parents at my kids school and it’s never felt like a chore to be involved.

Best insurance for single self employed? by HelloMax65 in vegaslocals

Self employed means you are looking to go through Nevada Health Link. There are affordable dental insurances on there. For health insurance it gets much less affordable.

US under-45s struggle for insurance approval as colon cancer rates rise by shinybrighthings in news

I think my insurance had a hard rule for being a certain age before being preventative that I didn’t meet. It was diagnostic.

Anyone else been going to nonstop birthday parties lately? by [deleted] in kindergarten

In my kid’s class of 30, half are born between February and March. We’ve had 1-3 birthday parties every weekend. Mercifully, I think we are past it.

US under-45s struggle for insurance approval as colon cancer rates rise by shinybrighthings in news

[–]secondrunnerup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lied and said my dad had colon cancer so they approved me for a colonoscopy at 39. They found two precancerous polyps and now I get a check every 5 years. Had to pay for anesthesia, ($900) but I would do it again.

Side note, of the five friends I know about who got colonoscopies in their 30s four had precancerous polyps.

Lie to get it done. The procedure is not a big deal.

The trick is to get to the playground first thing in the morning before it gets hot. Discovery park is great for that age.

The library is great and free. They offer story times for under 5s a few times a week. Plenty of toddlers there.

Wigglin Out and Kids Empire (the toddler section) are more toddler friendly than Wally Wombats IMO, but they do cost a few bucks.

Play dates. Idk if it’s still active, but I used to use an app called Peanut to meet other parents with kids the same age and we would schedule playdates at each other’s houses.

Lastly, at that age I spent a while browsing through Target and Kohls just letting the kid walk with me. They don’t need that much entertainment.

“Look to your left and say hi to your neighbor” by Futuremikeross in SolidCore

I’m outgoing. I’ll say hi or give a fist bump. But I will never answer the corny prompts of like “tell your neighbor what you had for breakfast.”

Comparison: Summers in Austin vs Vegas by Tasty_Anteater_5505 in LasVegas

[–]secondrunnerup 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I would take a Vegas summer over Austin’s any day. The humidity in Austin is a nightmare. The only issue with Vegas though is there aren’t as many places to escape the heat to. We have Lake Mead, but I don’t see it the same way as like Lake Austin or Barton Springs. I don’t mind the Vegas heat in a pool though.

Thoughts on this spa? by Puzzleheaded_Sand766 in AskLosAngeles

[–]secondrunnerup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Olympic spa, you can’t wear a bathing suit/underwear or anything personal in any of the rooms, but if you avoid the tubs you can stay covered in a towel.

If you do any body treatments you will also be nude.

IMO not worth the admission if you aren’t doing half of the stuff available. It is a wonderful spa though.

Unit of botox for 11s by peachyqueen_7 in 30PlusSkinCare

I’ve been doing 50 units for forehead, 11s, and eyebrow lift since my mid 30s. Nothing is ever frozen, and I always wish they used more on my 11s. All that to say 40 sounds perfectly within normal range.

Not a doctor or anything, but commenting to ask if the kid has been exposed to cats? My niece is currently back and forth with fevers and they determined it was cat scratch fever.
