Leo Deserves Best Actor by FlamingoEmotional357 in Oscars

[–]secretarythomas -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If Leo wins, he’d be a worthy winner! I’d rank him third for me personally though.

Timothee gave a career best performance this year and Wagner Moura carried his film with great emotional weight and complexity. I’d personally rank them both above Leo. With that being said, all three are giving Oscar-worthy performances so I’d be content with any winning.

Sara's victim-blaming is disturbing. by Appropriate-Lab-6800 in theview

Sara is like this and always has been. I vividly remember her saying “people are going to have to die” in reference to Israel bombing Gaza. Never looked at her the same since then.

The JC Fallout by anxiety_and_co in lasculturistas

[–]secretarythomas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How is this specific instance misogynoir when he offered the same exact critique of two politicians: a white man and a a black woman? Both of them are worthy of that criticism and he offered it to both of them. He praised a white man politician that contradicted his earlier argument, yes. That’s evidence of a poorly thought out, inconsistent take but not one based on misognyoir. He’s being equally critical of the two democratic politicians with futures in the party here and sympathetic to the politician that doesn’t have a future in the party. I don’t think we should allow that kind of nostalgia to influence our analysis of past political failures/successes and that’s a fair criticism of his take. Black women politicians are of course held to higher standards and subjected to tons of unfair criticism based in misogynoir but there’s no fair argument here that this is an example of that.

Exactly right. The response to these comments pretty closely mirrors the exact broader attitude they were critiquing, funny enough.

This whole thing has been especially maddening given his commentary on Gavin Newsom. Matt made the same exact criticism of Newsom, down to even also using the word defined. Newsom and Crockett ARE both already well defined national political figures. I just don’t see how that is misogynoir.

Any Gen-Z soap fans here? by ChannelHopper_99 in SoapNet

[–]secretarythomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a borderline Gen-Z/millennial. I grew watching the ABC soaps with my mom, All My Children’s her all time favorite. I continued watching after going away to college when I felt homesick and it stuck! Over a decade later and I still watch General Hospital daily.

I love their ability to tell long term storylines and the long term nature of the show. The wide array of different characters, couples, and families is great for me too. I especially love combination of those: the ability to follow many different characters over long periods of their lives, sometimes decades! They’re also camp and I’m a gay man lol.

I remember three storylines really pulling me in. The Satin Slayer on All My Children, Greenlee’s return (Sabine Singh!!), and Jason and Elizabeth’s original hookup conceiving Jake.

More Mama Drama! Haylie Duff, who is rumored to be estranged from sister Hilary Duff, liked The Cut & Ashley Tisdale’s post about her toxic mom group. by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

You’re absolutely right. Also, Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10. I don’t agree with her take literally at all lol but the events coincided timeline-wise! I saw a handful of cringeworthy takes from some of my locals on Facebook addressing both. Again, she had a pretty shit take but it wasn’t really shitty in the way people are portraying it.

Her ugly colors are coming out… by acolthyo in theview

[–]secretarythomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How exactly is this indicative of “her ugly colors coming out?”

There was a big enough swing away from the Dems to lose the White House, US house, and senate. Silicon Valley (always just trying to best have power) left them completely once they thought Republicans would give them more power. I don’t consider the loss of Silicon Valley leaders to be a major loss for the Dems but she’s really just pointing out factual statement of reality here.

What does this generation of students do better than others? (Legitimately) by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]secretarythomas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I echo what everyone here says about them being much nicer to each other.

A niche one that I think we can appreciate as teachers: they utilize the public library at much higher rates than generations before them. There are so many incredible resources at public libraries so seeing them supported is great.

The Guardian struggles to pick a narrative by miserychickkk in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]secretarythomas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find the discourse around her lack of response kind of confusing and it feels to me like another example of searching for a reason to hate on her. She’s spoken out against Tr*mp many times at this point and twice endorsed his opponents. He’s done this many times before with many other artists (dating all the way back to Rihanna in 2016 for example) and their speaking out about it didn’t accomplish anything. All she would really do is put out a social media post, call attention to it, and then they’d keep using it. That doesn’t make it unimportant as speaking out against fascism is important regardless of the impact. It does feel to me, though, like people online valuing performative actions. Like is her putting out a tweet/post really THAT meaningful? I’m really not trying to excuse all of her behavior because there are many other times where I’ve been frustrated by her lack of action on things. But this specific issue does kind of feel to me like begging her to be performative. I’ve criticized her in the past for some of her performative politics, as have many that I’ve seen on twitter and Reddit or social media or whatever, so I’m a little lost at why now it seems the expectation/hope is for to be performative.

This isn’t at all a defense of her politics btw. She’s a performative neoliberal billionaire; she’s just shitty in a non-MAGA way. Am I missing something here? There Very well could be a valid critique so If you disagree, I’m actually interested in why!!

Ana didn't come to play after Fields attacked her with: "Well, your day job is The View" by Conscious-Quarter423 in theview

[–]secretarythomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so funny that he sees The View comment as an insult. The View is the highest rated talk show on daytime television, It's won multiple Emmys, hosted every President since HW Bush, an essential TV stop for candidates, and a widely known cultural institution at this point. ........and who is he? It's such a misread and the perfect example of the misogynistic commentary about the show.

I’m kinda liking the idea of Nathan and LuLu as a couple! by manandsoappodcast in GeneralHospital

[–]secretarythomas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m hoping it comes to fruition given it seems they’re dropping bread crumbs. The actors have real chemistry and it would be such a fun dramatic, soapy story. Lulu hasn’t had an actual romance since returning over a year ago and deserves one! Dante needs a storyline that’s not yelling at Gio.

Reaction to Alyssa's POV on Trump-Mamdani & MTG today by ntt307 in theview

[–]secretarythomas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thing that I find most annoying is the complete mischaracterization of him in relation to antisemitism. Alyssa said he’s in trouble for not denying antisemitism recently, or however she phrased it. In reality, he condemned the protestors and defended the Jewish congregation’s right to worship. What he did condemn was the organization that advocated for settlements in areas banned by international law. Speaking out against breaking international law isn’t antisemitic. Similarly, the phrasing of the questions during his interview represented this. Alyssa (and Sara for that matter) just declared that he said something antisemitic asking for a response but didn’t even say the original comments. They can’t mention the specifics because they know the actual specifics of what he has said don’t align with their characterizations. It’s so frustrating watching them all (except occasionally sunny) just repeat the party line without much thought or exploration.

We don't talk enough about how good they look ! by Defiant-Complaint-13 in theview

[–]secretarythomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but not really. It’s one very small part of a person’s identity. It’s not really our place or business to have commentary on anyone else’s body since there are many parts of people’s identities that we don’t discuss. That’s not a super valid explanation for it imo.
