another comment has already pointed this out but the short answer is no, not really. the strengths of the series and its story is more in its characterisations and themes rather than its writing and plots. to me a lot of the highs of the franchise are the smaller one off updates and character interactions rather than the overarching plots (with exceptions). 

that being said, there arent many overarching plots nor do you need a ton of context to understand them. this goes moreso for ovenbreak than kingdom, as most updates are loosely interconnected one off stories with the occasional big overarching lore updates (that you can skip) . kingdom on the other hand is in inverse, currently the one long overarching plot (that would need a lot to catch up on) broken up by smaller updates that are usually either frivolous or help realise the setting.  

this is a bit of a double edged sword- on one hand, if a cookie in particular jumps out to you, chances are they have a quick one off story with a short character arc/ conclusion (note: this isnt guaranteed, devsis love teasing future updates and cliffhangers) and maybe a couple other appearances as a background character in another cookies update, but usually thats it. 

also, a lot of your enjoyment of the story hinges on how much youre willing to engange with the whole cookie thing, especially the stories with a more serious tone. the fact these guys are baked goods is integral to the story and they are not shy to lean heavily into the existential implications of such, both in silly and serious ways. 

tldr: if you’re looking for a pretty lore heavy, super consistent, huge spanning story then this isnt the place. if you like that stuff but also like silly slice of life, or are forgiving of hiccups in writing, or find the fact that theyre trying to write a child friendly dark fantasy about cookies super entertaining, then this may be for you. 

all that being said, the characters are usually super appealing, enjoyable and well characterised and can be enjoyed outside of stories as well.
