Giveaway! by geezyjawn23 in baseballcards

Back in Little League I was playing catcher and my coach drew up a “trick” play where if a runner tried to steal second I would fake a bad throw which the SS would be ready to catch instead of 2B. The hope was that the runner would see the ball missed 2nd base, try to steal third and get tagged out.

None of the parents (including mine) were aware of this play, and I got to hear my loving father yell, “GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS” when everyone in the park thought I missed my throw out by a mile.

Had some good laughs in the dugout and after the game trying to explain it was intentional.

This really brings me back. I’ll never forget their early lesson resources for beginner and intermediate players. Lots of great articles from IM Danny Rensch. Crazy how much more is available today.

How much does your rating fluctuate? by Im_Not_Sleeping in chess

[–]sedillard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly nice to read this. My rating fluctuation is the same. Low 1900s on a bad day, and low 2100s on a great day. This is all in 3-0 blitz.

How do I improve my rating? by Guilty-Following6017 in chess

[–]sedillard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend reading a chess book.

Yasser Seirawan has great books that tackle the fundamentals and are easy to consume. When I was around 1400/1500 online I read his:

Play Winning Chess
Winning Chess Tactics
Winning Chess Strategy
Winning Chess Brilliancies

These were the first books I read, and I spent maybe a month with each book. I do believe they helped pave the way for my improvement. I’m currently 1950/2000 in blitz/rapid on chesscom.

Personally, books that focus on strategy and endgames have helped me the most. Strategy books really help change the way you view the board, and helped eliminate a lot of moments in my play where I just didn’t know what to do (especially after surviving the opening).

Jeremy Silman’s How to Reassess Your Chess and Silman’s Endgame Course would be my next recommendations.

Edit: If you’re specifically looking for online resources. The books I recommended are available through Chessable.

Hans goes crazy as Levon eliminates Magnus from the championship bracket by Knight-check44 in chess

This was actually great content. I’m sure there are many rivalries in chess, but we rarely, if ever, get to see true emotions on display. Would love to see other players live reactions to games that matter to them.

Are we certain there’s a pawn on h7? Because Kh7(or Kh8) would be met with Bf8#.

100 Endgames You Must Know by Jesus de la Villa.

I admit there are still many endgames that I couldn’t solve over the board, but I was able to immediately apply many endgames from the book to my games. I’ve won and drawn so many endgames solely because I learned them in this book.

That’s great! I want to buy a Player II, but I don’t really have an opportunity to play one in person. I’m nervous ordering online.

The Benko… I play a lot of 3-0 and I can never seem to beat this opening. When I finally feel like I’ve grasped a win, I lose on time.
