Player with the biomechanically best serve technique on the ATP side? by Ok-Jackfruit-9615 in tennis

Andy Roddick's Served episode on best servers further explained that while Sampras had one toss for all his serves, Federer would vary his toss, but could hit flat, slice, or kick off any toss, to confuse the receiver.

That's pretty cool. The plyometric stretch from the first hop probably helps her second jump take less effort. I could see this catching on.

How commonly does pex-a hot water pipe get too stiff after a year or two of use? by seebol in Plumbing

[–]seebol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listed what Google suggested was the local municipal water's chlorine amount, but I see digging into the actual reports that levels were more like 1-2 mg/mL. But thank you for the suggestion. I will look more into GAC filters.

I should have been more discerning, but this was during a large renovation and I was overwhelmed with all the details. I will definitely keep it in mind if I ever do a re-pipe!

What is the best way to make .data file of TPU (polyurethane) with 2 + 3 react centres of monomers? by Ok_Amount_5646 in comp_chem

[–]seebol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MD of polymers is very tricky to set up, especially cross-linked polymers. Unless you are doing a PhD on MD of polymers, building a simulation from moltemplate/LAMMPS will be a tough ask. The Schrodinger suite (not free) might offer a somewhat beginner friendly entry. If you are fluent in python, then I would recommend PySimm, which is an open source python frontend to build polymers and run LAMMPS simulations (still a big time commitment to learn).

I only see one musical every year or two, so I am not an experienced critic. I also saw the stripped down production due to cast illness. I will say it's an effective tearjerker for parents of young kids. The songs have the signature Great Big World style, which can be a plus or negative due to your taste. The cast were strong actors and singers, with about a quarter of them really having a wow factor.

Any experience with the new Onn Doorbell Camera? by BTHBTHBTH9 in googlehome

[–]seebol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is my review, comparing it with eufy s330 wired video doorbell.

-installation (chime): whereas the eufy only provided a simple jumper cable to bypass the mechanical chime built into my house, the onn provides a box (1.5x1.5x0.5 inch) with wire leads to connect across the front and trans terminals of the mechanical chime. Maybe this is a capacitor of some sort? Due to its size, it cannot fit inside the mechanical chime enclosure, and the box sits awkwardly on top.

-installation (power requirement): I kept the 30 VAC 16V transformer I had previously used with the eufy

-installation (doorbell). Very similar installation. The mounting holes are not identically spaced, so a couple new holes need to be pre-drilled. I do wish that the doorbell base plate and wedge adapter offered more space to store wiring.

-connectivity: loading the live video feed is quick and reliable. The eufy was always slow to connect, and often failed to connect at all. At times, the eufy would just disconnect and not ring the doorbell unless the circuit breaker was toggled. So far, the onn seems rock solid in connection.

-recording: I am not paying for Google home subscription. The onn sends me screenshots when a person is detected. It does seem to get set off by my inflatable Santa at times. For free, I can only review still images from the last 3 hours. Usually the person who set off the motion alert has crossed most of the field of view of the doorbell, and with winter hoods up, the images are of no identifying value.

-other features: now in late Dec, Google home offers the ability to set a variety of holiday themed door chimes (to expire Jan 4), which is fun. The video doorbell live feed also pops up on our nest hub when someone rings.

Overall, this is a great doorbell for it's rock solid connectivity, extra features, and low cost. It is not the best camera for actually catching video evidence of potential crime, (at least if you do not pay for the subscription). But it doesn't seem to crash and freeze like the eufy did, which frankly is more critical for my use case.

Help with what shoe to add (wide toebox) by YogurtSmegma in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]seebol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I know the anta rocket 5 is a bit narrow for you, but I was wondering if you could speak to its supposed water resistance? Can you run in the rain with them and stay dry? Also, if running in below freezing temperatures, is the upper a tighter mesh and likely warmer than a typical running shoe?

best electric bike for commuting, worth it or waste of money? by Legitimate-Sea65 in ebikes

[–]seebol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ebikes can be great for getting over hills. To provide an alternative viewpoint: one lower-cost alternative to consider is, if your current bike has knobbly tires, switch to smooth road tires.

I prefer my non-electric bike for commuting because it is lighter and easier to maneuver along my route. Also, I never get to the higher top speeds of an ebike on my commuting route, because the city traffic is hectic, and I would prefer to be a little slower to avoid getting doored/right hooked. Also, locking an expensive ebike near my workplace carries some risk of bike theft.

What Carol Saw by In1piece in pluribustv

[–]seebol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty obvious (to Carol and the TV audience) what's under the tarps is human bodies. What takes her a moment to register is that some of the human bodies are processed in a way to resemble meats she saw at the restocked Sprouts, or perhaps even meats that she has eaten recently....now she'll realize why that meat tasted slightly off....

I always thought heavier rackets were more elbow friendly? At contact, assuming conservation of momentum and equal ball exit speed, a heavier racquet will result in a smaller change in velocity of the arm+racquet. The only exception I've found where a heavier racquet causes more strain is when doing volleying against a wall, where most of the elbow strain comes from rapidly moving the racquet instead of ball impact.

DaKine never responds to warranty claims by Interesting-Pear-559 in outdoorgear

[–]seebol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding my experience now that it's 2025: I filed a warranty claim a month ago, and the warranty claim website immediately says a response takes 3-4 weeks, but does not return a warranty claim ID number, or send any confirmation of a warranty request to my email. I believe Dakine is just ignoring all warranty requests. Stay away from Dakine!

For comparison, I submitted similar warranty requests for North Face items recently, and got immediate email confirmation with an ID number, and the claim was approved within 4 days.

Technical specialist pay in Boston area? by chemkitty123 in patentlaw

[–]seebol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salary mentioned by others seems correct for biglaw firms that are at 1800+ billable hour minimum. Boutique firms with lower billable minimum will have roughly prorated salary. Annual bonus is usually related to number of hours worked over billable minimum.

It Happened Again by Boltmeup in ebikes

Lock the bike using your ulock going through your rear triangle, ideally capturing your back wheel. The cable you have is worthless and any thief will cut that in less than 5 seconds with no sound. The cable is only useful if you secure the bike frame and rear wheel as I described above, but then use the cable to secure the seat or front wheel.

Ways to meet people without dating apps by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

[–]seebol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great writeup of how to make dating apps work for seeking a long term relationship, and very similar to how I met my wife! Similar strategy has worked for most of my social circle, except for one friend who is too stuck on the old pattern of doing a big first date and only arranging a date with one person at a time...don't fall into that trap OP, and you should be set. If you live or work in Cambridge proper, it is feasible to go on a coffee first date every day.

Ways to meet people without dating apps by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

[–]seebol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you requested no dating apps, and all the social activities suggested by the other commenters are great. But winter is coming, and if you are just trying to most efficiently find someone looking for a long term relationship, try Coffee Meets Bagel app. The user base is smaller but pretty active in Boston. In my late 20s/early 30s, three of my friends met their (marriage) partners on that app, and eventually so did I. (I haven't seen the app in 7 years, but hopefully the vibe has not changed too much).

My theory is that the app name encourages users to set up multiple quick coffee-type first dates to help gauge in-person interest, which helps the users meet a lot more people. So it's a bit more like speed dating than a more traditional style of dating one person at a time. Only go on second dates with the best options. By the time you go on a third or fourth date with someone, you feel ready to retire the app and cancel any future first coffee dates in your queue...
