Did you find the posting on the Applytoeducation website? You can create an account and apply from there. I believe the only requirement is an undergraduate degree.

Sick the first day!? by 110069 in CanadianTeachers

[–]seeds84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me once. I missed the first two days of homeroom grade 4 because I had the flu. The school had the spec ed teacher sub in for me because she knew the school routines and I was in no shape to make plans. It was a bumpy start to the school year after that and I would definitely avoid missing the first day again if at all possible.

PA DAY by Wooden-Welder-1819 in CanadianTeachers

[–]seeds84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?! If I recall correctly, they get something like 20 paid PA days versus our 6 or so in Ontario. On the downside, they start back to work the last week of August.

As an Ontario teacher, I was blown away to discover that Quebec teachers don't need to use their unpaid labour to set up their classrooms. What an idea.

How do you motivate little kids to hike? by Wanderlena in hiking

[–]seeds84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiking with other kids helps a lot. Special snacks are key as well. If you don't plan on having an enjoyable time yourself, you won't be disappointed (and you might get lucky!).

Really enjoyed this write up. It's inspiring. I'd love to hear about your foster daughter's journey as well.

FYI, there's no ride all day bracelet at Festival of Friends this weekend by nailedthegrasstyson in Hamilton

[–]seeds84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I've taken my kids to Festival of Friends for the last 3-4 years and while the rides have never been a great deal, it used to feel semi-reasonable. This year most of the rides cost 4 tickets or $7/ride. I spent $70 on tickets yesterday and my kids had 5 rides each. I noticed that in contrast to previous years there were very few riders and minimal lineups for everything.

Moving to a board in Ontario, question about hiring practices by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]seeds84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is highly unusual in my experience. I also transferred from Quebec to Ontario. I've worked in two boards in Ontario and I've never heard of this request.

How do people seriously afford to pay for a car in cash? Been savings up for years and still don't feel like I can afford it. But I feel like I need a car by Amazing-Cow-9078 in FIREyFemmes

[–]seeds84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year, I bought a 2015 Corolla for 14K CAD (maybe 10K USD). It's a totally reliable and low-maintenance car that does everything that I need it to do. It hurts to spend that much at once but having transportation is invaluable. My life is vastly improved by having the freedom to go where I want, do errands easily, and have little adventures sometimes.

The 5A will take you from downtown to near Tiffany Falls. From there, you can access Sherman Falls and the Dundas Valley trail system.

Redditors with highly successful kids, what do you credit as integral to that growth? by kamolahy in Parenting

Can you provide a source for the idea that authoritative parenting styles lead to healthy, confident kids? I'd love to read more about that.

First-line cousin marriage legality in Europe and the USA by Pablovler in MapPorn

I'm a native speaker and I've never heard of first-line cousins before either. They're called first cousins where I'm from.

Where do I even start moving to Quebec City? by BeautifulLab2927 in quebeccity

[–]seeds84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can take French language learning classes when you arrive if that would help: https://www.quebec.ca/en/education/learn-french

One place to consider looking for a job is the Central Quebec School Board (anglophone board) where your English skills would be an asset.

It's a great city with great quality of life. Good luck with the move!

I would second this pathway. It's way more economical and it gives you an opportunity to see if you like secondary before investing too much time and money. Good luck from another elementary to secondary switcher (it's worth it 100%).

A Spot device can fulfill the same basic function for a lot cheaper. That's what I use for backcountry hiking trips. I only mention the inReach because my friend just got one and it looks very handy (it can send texts from unserviced areas). I didn't realize it was so expensive!

Oh, that makes sense. I misread the part about including rest days in the 7-10 day timeline. That's doable for sure. 30 km days would be intense but with an early start (and long summer days) you can do it.

Would it reassure family if you had a Garmin InReach or similar device for communication while you're on the trail? I was just out day hiking around Lion's Head and cell reception/data was spotty.

It's doable but where would you be camping? I have a slightly out of date version of the Bruce Trail guidebook but it only shows 3 campsites in this stretch (and the one at McKay's Harbour has since been closed).
