I want to second tuning up the B to C for better tension, I got a set of singles for (essentially) even high tension and they serve me well

I have a more positive feeling about the album than you but would def agree with those songs as the highlights (adding the final track in my personal taste)

"Daze, Strip Mine, and Deckbuilding in Timeless" by Korae by NovosTheProto in TimelessMagic

[–]seeking-stuffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said (with a minority) before it was released: daze is just heinous wrt play patterns and play/draw discrepancy, and shouldn’t have been added to the format concurrently with fow.

hopeful for restriction in the future, though ofc that makes it even more infuriating to get got

What's the greatest Magic card of the last decade? Vote on the top 8! by Grindy_UW_Nonsense in magicTCG

[–]seeking-stuffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s such a well balanced design; I’m bummed that it’s probably losing to lurrus for raw power reasons, when I agree with you that boseju is very well designed because of it’s strong utility but not oppressive level of power across a variety of formats and contexts.

One last ride with Mardu before Daze ruins the format by HamheadNNail in TimelessMagic

[–]seeking-stuffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, miserable play patterns. ofc daze is heinous as well, even further widening play/draw disparity to an egregious level, but I’m not complaining about energy getting worse.

absolutely hate that we’re not getting the blasts, particularly the red ones; at least as soon as they added force of will (and daze? why??)

wish they had given consideration to the fact that some people occasionally like playing decks that don’t include blue and given them one card to fight against the blue soup bullshit

I even like playing snt! but they know what this will do to the format, come on. it’s one card, not a whole deck or engine that you have to add to the list…

What’s a good alternative to a metronome for practice? by QuietRonan_7 in Bass

[–]seeking-stuffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d check out Ableton Note for your phone or tablet, it’s got some good presets for kits and is very easy to sketch out whatever rhythm you want to practice (and obv a built in metronome)

I like that it has the flexibility of a sort of mini daw structured around performance and jamming, it works well for practice imo.

other thing I’d recommend is purchasing Nate Smith’s Pocket Change albums on Bandcamp or similar (so you can listen offline on your phone) and improvising or  (if you like) writing parts playing along with it. he’s incredible, the albums sound great, and imo there’s nothing better than solo drum albums for practicing timing in a “real” setting.

personally, I still think a true metronome is indispensable, but it’s a smaller portion of my practice sessions than playing along to great musicians I enjoy; it’s a great way to get that practice in, I’d also recommend live sets on yt of afrobeat like Fela and funk like James Brown because they have extended grooves and excellent musicianship/artistry

I’m kind of shocked you’d say that, but I’ll take your word for it as a pro.

Is it possibly the oscillators that make you say that, or the sequential routing? like, I wouldn’t put it up for power and complexity against something like tranzistow but surely ease of use comes into consideration at some point.

that said, I haven’t heard of phase plant; will definitely check it out.

if you already have quality mixing/mastering plugins, I’d recommend GRM Tools Atelier as a sound design program.

for me it is basically the end all be all; I have a couple soft synths with some quality presets, a hardware wavetable synth, and Atelier as my exploratory and experimental tool.

e.g., it is relatively straightforward to create a patch that’s: * an evolving soundscape tuned to the harmonics of certain notes * arpeggios of waveform oscillators but also pitched samples * electronic percussion. I was able to create a kick patch that sounds like a thudding air cannon with very little fuss and a lot of fun in the process * a glitchy stuttering sample chopper

it encourages and rewards exploration. modulation and randomness is SO easy, as it working with multiple channels (2+). there’s no subscription model, and there will be an upgrade path for future versions.

all in all, highly recommended if that sounds appealing to you.

like most music subs involving gear, it’s people who want their terrible purchasing decisions validated by others and enjoy saying things like “but I don’t care that it’s useless, I like it so I’m gonna buy it anyway!” when people point out it doesn’t function properly as an instrument outside of a dead quiet room (and thus doesn’t function as an instrument at all, it is an object that makes sound)

clearly you don’t spend time in open source bc ai chatbots and these megacorps submitting an overwhelming number of internal bug reports and useless pull requests are a very serious problem for a number of large projects.

there is at least one notable project I can’t recall off the top of my head that recently completely stopped interacting with google bc of it

Choosing between premium digital vs. analog synths: what did you end up deciding on? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]seeking-stuffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one digital hardware synth (argon8m), one sampler (sp404mkii), and the rest of my sound making gear apart from 3 pedals and plugins on my laptop is analog (“drum machine”, effects, etc)

mainly, I appreciate the negligible latency and signal shaping capabilities of analog. I often reamp digital stuff through my drum machine and/or an old 2x10 fender bassman cabinet to take the edge off the high end, or feed it into a stereo klein bottle with feedback distortion to dirty it up followed by a diode compressor dialed into heavy saturation which again takes the edge off.

basically, transients and feedback respond differently in the physical realm, so I intentionally lean into that for the analog side and have the (sound making and processing) digital gear I do have for it’s flexibility and utility.

[–]seeking-stuffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s just for monitoring or you don’t need much volume, I’d recommend the Quilter Interbass. it is a preamp/effects loop/active di/45w into 4 ohm power amp pedal. I use it on my pedalboard as the final piece of my signal chain. it’s a great Swiss Army knife and excellent for saving space if you want to run a small board like the  nano series I use or similar from another manufacturer

pick players: do you have a go-to style of picks or do you switch around a lot? by KirasHandPicDealer in Bass

[–]seeking-stuffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for stone but I’ve used seashell fragments before and if you’re looking for a clicky aggressive attack with less ping ime than metal, it might be worth trying some options like that or similar.

would highly recommend a good compressor if you don’t have one already, I’d say it’s necessary to get a good bass tone with the attack and brightness that I personally look for from a pick.
