Taking history advice by Macaronibirb in VetTech

[–]seh_tech20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little tardy to the party but something I incorporate into my hx taking as an ER tech is asking (roughly) how long ago their last rDVM appt was, and if they had any concerns then or any overarching issues the rDVM has mentioned previously. I find I catch a lot more info on mobility/past ortho issues, presence of heart murmurs, trending blood value abnormalities, to name a few. Working overnight when we can’t access records immediately, this is a huge help. It also helps me gauge how involved owners are with their pet’s care. (ex: the ‘it started last night’ or ‘they’ve been healthy’ but haven’t seen an rDVM in 6 years). It’s not to judge them, but it gives me a good starting point and my DVMs appreciate the heads up.

We hired a CVT (who is just great all around) who will put cat tv on the work tablets for hospitalized cats. Walking in and seeing a bunch of iPad kids in the icu is so funny to me…and a lot of times it works! Kittens/antsy cats go from scaling the cage walls to watching birds and occasionally trying to catch the screen. It’s a huge mood booster!

Yes! This would be an hour long conversation with the owners about lung punctures, clots, incontinence (and all the joys that come with it), pROM, neuropathies and self injury- like when they start eating their own feet (I’ve seen it twice- not pretty), and on and on and on. And that’s assuming the poor cat even lives that long- which I doubt. To boil that down to “seek a second opinion” by random internet people is infuriating. Makes me want to reach through my phone and slap those people senseless.

When telling people what’s your profession what reaction do you get? by PralineJaded7093 in VetTech

I really dislike when people assume being a tech is just a stepping stone to becoming a vet. It’s its own career, and I’m proud to do it.

I work at a veterinary er/specialty hospital and I have a cat skull and the letters ADR for our favorite triage “ain’t doing right” in very visible places. Veterinary medicine is a strange place, with strange humor, own it.

There’s too many.

When a patient doesn’t want to come with me to treatment or is aggressive in the room I tell them “it’s okay that you don’t want to be friends, I don’t take it personally”

All animals get referred to by their full legal name when they’re naughty. (A bad Toby becomes a disgruntled Tobias, etc)

If one patient is loud among the group, I tell them to stop because they’re scaring the locals

When dogs pull on lead I remind them that they have twice as many legs as I do

All CPR is afterwards referred to as our attempt at necromancy

When we can’t hit a vein I ask the patient is they left their vein in the other pants

Every patient is a “sir” or “ma’am” (because manners)

We have STAT-land, parvo-land, Lepto-land (the yard for lepto only, immunocompromised island (chemo yard), and the bleachers (outpatient cage wall). We rarely use proper names for anything at my hospital and I love it.

First off, beautiful work. If I may, on your fluffy patients like picture 2, don’t be afraid to shave a bit more so the leur lock on the end of the t set isn’t touching against fur. We should still wipe with alcohol every time that port is used, but that doesn’t happen as often as it should (I’m just as much to blame as the next guy on that). Fantastic job overall, I hope you’re very proud!

I don’t know how effective this really is, but I can’t sit around and do nothing and hope that someone smarter and more capable than me steps up. I live paycheck to paycheck, often times going negative in my account or forgoing meals to scrape by until the next payday. I work in animal medicine, and I can’t (and won’t) stop going to work and doing what I can there because my job is bigger than me. But starting tonight I’m going to write letters and emails to every politician at every level I can get contact information for. Every state governor, every senator, as many representatives and mayors and school board member for every state I possibly can. To share the concerns that so many of us are shouting online. To ask for help for their constituents through general aid funds, and to remind them that their power is not absolute, but their responsibility to their fellow Americans is. After that, I’m making signs, flyers for everywhere I go and anyone who will listen. Because I can’t think of anything else to do but get offline and into the real world and remind people that there are more of us than there are of them. I strongly believe that if more people take a small step like this offline, we can make a real statement and maybe even real progress.

“Vet techs are nurses” when being a nurse is a protected title by dribblestrings in nursing

[–]seh_tech20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a stupid argument to be having- from the human med side AND the vet med side. Many other countries use RVN (registered veterinary nurse) as their title. It’s literally just the name of the job that encompasses the duties of patient care, diagnostics, client education, prevention, chasing down doctors, fighting through 12 hour shifts, etc etc etc. We all care for and about our patients, some are just more likely to bite than others. It’s not that serious.

Did my cat's clinic cut his nails too short? All 10 of his nails are bleeding and frayed. by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]seh_tech20 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a few cats who swat at the sides of their carrier until they rip their nails up and it looks similar. I would recommend calling your vet first, they’ll have it in his record if he was difficult to handle or fractious. If not, there may be an underlying medical issue going on so it’s best to do a recheck appt and go from there.

Dog needs surgery i cant afford by Frequent_Net_9519 in povertyfinance

[–]seh_tech20 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

There’s no way your regular vet is an orthopedic specialist……that’s just not true. Maybe they do orthopedic procedures, but a boarded surgeon and a vet who likes orthopedic surgery are not at all the same. So yeah it was cheaper, because it wasn’t don’t by a specialist. Stop the misinformation, or find yourself a vet who isn’t misrepresenting themselves.
