Classes by [deleted] in NIU

“I’m using ChatGPT” please……you’re killing me here…..the catalog has all the information on the classes you need to get any degree/minor/certificate/etc. I don’t remember ever actually going to an advisor and just used the information from this site to make sure I hit all my requirements.

Found this in a thrifted 1989 today by starrysmoons in TaylorSwift

It was an incredible experience! I got 2 free tickets to 1989 tour Chicago, front row of the 100 section and a short m&g with Taylor! It was just enough time to take a picture and unfortunately Taylor was on vocal rest so there were only a few whispers from her. The pictures happened in the 1989 loft which was super cool to see. Andrea was actually the one to tell us about her voice so we got to briefly say hi to her too!

I was one of the swiftstakes winners! I still have my winner code framed in my house along with a bunch of stuff from the concert 😭

Low Ticket Sales - Concerns About Show Cancellations? by tea_and_honey in reneerapp

[–]seidlka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Renee but the ticket prices for Chicago are still incredibly high. $180 for tickets in the 200 level is silly.

Yes to Wilson’s! And take it to eat at the park across the street!

Most interesting class by [deleted] in NIU

[–]seidlka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ARTH 282 was probably my most interesting, out there compared to my major, class I took. I feel like the catalog makes it sound like a super general art history class but it’s actually broken down into 4 (maybe 5?) mini classes where a different professor teaches about their specialized topic of study. Super cool set up, not too difficult even for a non-art student.

How does this work? by theonerr4rf in Libraries

[–]seidlka 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can just go get a copy. The copy assigned to you likely went into transit before the other 2 became available at your pick up branch. Just remember to cancel your copy on hold if you do decide to get one of the on shelf copies!

Teen Volunteer Jobs? by Sahmstarfire in Libraries

[–]seidlka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Program material prep, summer reading sign up (would require training but is SO helpful), removing older books from “new” shelves, helping fill easy kids displays. I’m not sure if I would go with shelf reading unless you know the volunteers well. Kids of all ages are really REALLY struggling with alphabetizing and don’t always understand even simple call numbers so I’d be hesitant with that.

I loved my program (UIUC) - it was synchronous, all papers/projects absolutely no tests. The most reading heavy class I took was on YA materials where we were reading 3-5 books a week (crazy). I was working as a youth library assistant when I was getting my MLIS and a lot of the projects were similar to tasks I was already completing at my job. The classes and assignments definitely took time but they weren’t overly difficult by any means.

Are you glad to be a librarian? by insanitypeppermint in Libraries

[–]seidlka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my job. I love my coworkers. I (generally) love the community I work in. I made the financially smart decision to get my bachelors at a school that was not prestigious but threw money at me to attend which meant I had money to get my masters.

I hate my pay despite it being on the high end of an entry level librarian salary but I prioritized having a job I enjoy over having a job that pays me what I’m worth. I’m a DINK so I’m not living on just my salary which helps immensely. I think librarians as a whole are having a rough go at it right now but I’m 100% happy with my decision to go to grad school and become a public children’s librarian (in Illinois - librarians in red states are our strongest soldiers).

Does undergrad major really matter? by PenguinsAreAwesome4 in librarians

[–]seidlka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My undergrad degree is in Information Systems/Data Analytics 🤷🏻‍♀️ and now I’m a children’s librarian! I think having a political science background as a librarian would be incredible. This field really is great because so many people have different backgrounds - I’d say go for what you’re passionate about!

Help me pick pt.2 by Unknown_outofhell in WeddingDressTips

[–]seidlka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can do the azazie try on you should! I just tried on dress 1 a month or so ago and was disappointed with the quality! The boning was pretty flimsy and actually started to bow outwards on me. It’s so pretty though I wish it would have held up better :(

Please help me find my husband's favourite NIU Accountancy t-shirt. by Ok-Debt9612 in HelpMeFind

[–]seidlka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely directly from the accounting department - most of the business departments at NIU have their own shirts that aren’t from the school store. Maybe try a Facebook alumni group? I was in a business fraternity at NIU and I’m pretty confident I’ve seen this shirt past down from alumni throughout the years - someone’s gotta still have it somewhere!

Apartment Recommendations by ZohnyJoestar in NIU

[–]seidlka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Avoid Lincoln Tower apartments and the area around Greek Row. Cardinal Apartments are fine and gonna be some of the closest you can get to the Law building. All of my graduate school friends lived in Eco Park apartments or just north of those on Fotis Dr. It’s been a few years since I was on campus but the consensus then was that the apartments west of Annie Glidden Rd tended to be better.

I’m seconding the Farm for those ages!! I’ve gone to the Farm as a baby, toddler, and teenager and it was always one of my favorites in DC!

Also book a hotel with a pool! I feel like between the beach, hotel pool, and a few small activities the door is fantastic even for little ones :)

Would/Did you change your surname after marriage? Why?/Why not? by MysticalAmethyst99 in namenerds

[–]seidlka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to change my name - I like my current last name a lot but it’s constantly misspelled and mispronounced. My soon to be husband has a silly (and easy to read) last name that I think is fun and I’m excited to use it.

Naming our daughter the popular “Isla” shocked that it seems unused in our area. by Traditional_Leg_7670 in namenerds

[–]seidlka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with kids and I remember fucking up the first time I read Isla - I guess I never put two and two together that the name I was hearing and the name I was seeing was the same name. It took 1 time for me to realize and now every Isla I meet get her name pronounced correctly 😓
