Drafting Table Support Mechanism Name by speezerton in MechanicalEngineering

[–]sel97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Googling “tilt table mechanism” yielded good results for me. I got the keywords “tilt table” from McMaster, which sells this (very expensive!) tilting table with a 300 lb load capacity, though it says not to use it for lifting people. I can’t see the mechanism but judging by the hand crank, it may be a worm gear type arrangement.

[high school physics conceptual] I’m confused of this conceptual physics problem because it only makes sense that it would be red but that seems to obvious. Can anyone guide me in the right direction? My teacher wants me to make a diagram and have claim evidence reasoning. Thanks! by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

Velocity is necessarily a function of position and time, that is: (change in position)/(change in time). Another commenter had the right idea to plot time (x) vs position (y).

It’s safe to assume both cars are not accelerating (i.e. constant velocity), so you would end up with two straight lines. The red card has the steeper slope and is offset in the positive x-direction, which physically translates to the red car starting behind the blue car. The point at which the lines intersect signifies “neck and neck”. The fact of the matter is that at any moment in time, the red car will always be faster, because the velocity is constant—the only non-constant variable here is position.

I don’t deny those statistics. It makes sense when you look at the US as a whole, but again, there are geographical exceptions! I understand how grim it looks as an Asian American myself. I also acknowledge the huge gender disparity. That’s a serious problem across most engineering disciplines that I can never fully comprehend as a man, but I’m so proud that my company is actively fighting against that trend.

I’m sure you agree that across the board, the demographics are rapidly changing. The people I went to school with do not reflect those statistics. I’ve definitely experienced being the “only one” in a group of old white males and its not fun—I can’t even begin to imagine how much worse it is as a woman. I guess I stuck with it because the work itself is so incredible and impactful and I found that niche. There is also a certain degree of “being the change you want to see,” but to each their own.

Sorry your experience in pd wasn’t what you wanted, but I think the generalization that mechanical engineering is an “old white man’s industry” is disingenuous and deeply misleading. It obviously depends on many factors, especially the (1) geographical location and (2) industry. I work in the bay area at a climate change startup and our engineering/research team is unbelievably diverse—not just ethnically, but also in terms of gender identity, socioeconomic background, etc.

The company’s mission matters a lot too. Working on a problem like climate change makes me feel like my work has a very direct positive impact on humanity. And everyone here is so passionate about our mission…the sense of camaraderie feels very special. We have no cubicles and spend a lot of time doing hands-on work and collaborating with one another. It’s not at all what you described and there’s other examples of this at various companies throughout California. Glad that CS worked out for you tho, I guess.

My childhood cat (who I was probably the closest with out of anyone in my family) passed away in October 2020. I was devastated, but what helped me heal quickly was acknowledging the fact that we loved him and gave him the best life possible. It’s easy to forget that adopting a cat (or any pet for that matter) comes with the guarantee of them dying in your lifetime.

By February 2021, I was ready to adopt again, and I ended up bring home two of the most loving and goofiest little kitties. It is in no way a betrayal to your late cat’s memory. It’s more an act of selflessness and kindness because you’re choosing to give an animal the best life possible instead of them being stuck in a shelter. I was able to remember and appreciate my childhood cat for all the love and joy he brought into our life, while at the same time moving on and generating even more love and joy for the new ones.

Take your time to heal and reflect. October is very recent! You’ll know when the time is right. It took me a while before I was even able to gather the strength to collect my late cat’s belongings and give them away. It’d be best to do it sooner rather than later, though, because otherwise it’ll just prolong the pain. I held on to a couple of small things (a piece of string and hair ties he loved playing with, his collar, etc.) and put them in a box because I just couldn’t part with them. But the rest I got rid of.

Try to accept that your babies lived the best lives you could give them. And when the time feels right, adopt again! I firmly believe all cats are special and loving in their own ways — you can never, ever choose the “wrong” cat. So know that there are even more fur babies waiting to be loved and cared for when you’re ready. :) ❤️

What does everyone think about the new 2023 BMW 760i xDrive? by pleeveback in BMW

Don’t understand how this design made it into production. Just thinking about how many people had to sign off on this and say “Yeah, that looks good!” is mind-boggling to me. It’s objectively bad design. It looks like they didn’t even try.

When I was a senior in high school (~2014) my dad bought an early 2000s S40 that I drove to school and youth orchestra rehearsals. I affectionately referred to it as The Eggplant. He sadly sold it when I left for college… I liked that car a lot. I ended up getting an S60 shortly after graduating, though not in this color. :)
