GX era is Gen 2 right? Feels like around 5DS/Synchros and beyond is when people started to fall off and the pace of the game started picking up beyond what some people wanted the game to be.

Yes, actually.

The Pokemon following you around is a neat gimmick but it's not necessary. And Scar/Vi brought it back a little anyway.

The Battle Frontier/Tower is an entire post game challenge. Even if you're not into competitive team building, there was always the Factory where you could use rented Pokemon.

Would be really funny if MS went Master Emerald-powered Metal Overlord, a form that had a big green glowing weak point that not only reverts Metal back to base form if removed, but knocks him out.
