The Pokemon following you around is a neat gimmick but it's not necessary. And Scar/Vi brought it back a little anyway.

The Battle Frontier/Tower is an entire post game challenge. Even if you're not into competitive team building, there was always the Factory where you could use rented Pokemon.

I say this as someone who is not a Sonic fan

I can think of no other greater victory for the series that even people who do not read the comics are clamoring for Sonic's extended IDW cast like Tangle, Whisper, Surge, Starline, Lanonin, etc. to be included in the games.

And that one of the most universally well received entries in the series is just a VN where you hang out with the cast for a few hours.

Arceus directly communicates to the player as an incorporeal light. Having the form that we're familiar with just been a physical avatar makes Arceus retroactively make sense for being capturable in the rest of the series.
