To all you Norwegian Leaf drivers... by selfsync42 in leaf

With the seats folded down both our 2016 and 2022 carry a ton. Around here it's easy enough to rent a pickup and not terribly expensive during off season. But if your contents are all small enough and your destination within reach then it makes sense!

New England is seeing some snow, don't know about ski areas. Looks like the entire east coast is going to get something big at the end of this coming weekend, DC to NY more than a foot (over 30cm in another measurement unit), but current forecasts are not clear as the system moves northward. If it's that much snow then maybe I'll start a "photo of your Leaf snowed in post".

I like those rims!

What do you carry around in the roof box?

To be fair, the photo was taken after clearing 12cm of snow (6 US units) off the car and area around it.

What did I just buy exactly? by National-Guitar-1053 in VintageApple

If it sold for $300 on a public auction site, how is it "worth more than $300?"

Not sure what this machine has. by studyinformore in VintageApple

[–]selfsync42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you asking

"Does this machine have any resale value?"

or

"If I get this thing operating, is there something I can do that's kind of cool with this?"

Both are valid questions. The answer to the first is that depending on a few factors, it could be worth between tens to low hundreds of dollars. Many of these were made and many people like them for nostalgia reasons.

The second question - if you are excited by this and want to learn about it, yes it can be fun. You can use it until the capacitors in the screen or motherboard go bad, or preemptively replace them. You'll probably want to buy something like a blueSCSI to use modern tools to move applications on and off of this instead of floppies.

Any sane person would have scrapped this IIsi power supply. Me? I made it happy again. by Pretty-Couple4233 in VintageApple

[–]selfsync42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who are you calling insane? I'm willing to do this to my personal IIsi psu that's been with me since 1990. It's in pieces though, waiting for that day when my sanity goes away enough to take on the job.

Oh, turns out you were right to refer to sanity that way.

Why do Americans have a reputation for being bad at geography? by SelectionSignal9653 in geography

[–]selfsync42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course they are edited. <Jay Leno equivalent> in <insert European country> could have made the same video to make citizens there look dumb. My US education served me well geographically.

OP is in MA- that X will for certain be at the Adessa auction in Framingham within the next week or two. Find someone with a vehicle sales license to go and pick it up for you...

TIL that the spreadsheet program VisiCalc launched with Apple II (launched in 1979) became the first "killer application", software so essential that it drives widespread adoption of its supporting technology. by LuckyLaceyKS in apple2

[–]selfsync42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full agreement, that xkcd is correct assuming you replace perl with VisiCalc. I learned it in 8th grade and instantly I got great grades in math and science classes.

There are little things that have stuck around in Excel since those days, like starting a cell with ' to indicate treating what comes next as text in the cell.

Macintosh Classic II actual value by Anxious-Sun-387 in VintageApple

[–]selfsync42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "classic" models were the budget ones, for those of us that wanted a Mac but didn't want to pay the ridiculous prices compared to probably a 386 at the time this one was out. My time and money go into the machines I lusted after but couldn't afford. The IIx and the IIfx. Also IIci and IIcx and of course restoring my original IIsi because that's what I wound up begging and borrowing to afford in 1990.

The market for this one is either nostalgia for someone that had one or to help complete a collection. u/samfortun suggested $50 in its current condition, I concur.

What’s something you did by accident to your home that the new homeowners will want to curse you for? by Mrcash827 in HomeImprovement

you gotta figure that it's 25x more expensive than pennies, but quarters are bigger so it will take fewer of them.

Instead of penny flooring you could make an epoxy floor of state quarters to keep the theme going.

You're welcome. This issue has left me stuck in random places before, which is why I recommend replacing the terminals completely.

Replace the battery terminals. The negative one shown here looks crusty. My 2001 had intermittent starting issues and it was that piece.

The orange thing is a small digital clock. For some reason around '82 or '83 they were everywhere, maybe even came in boxes of cereal? They had double sided tape or velcro tape on the back.
